A Mann vs. Machine mission is a pre-set wave of robots that occur on a Mann vs. Machine map. Added in the update of the same name they are classified by difficulty in four levels, namely "Normal" (the easiest), "Intermediate", "Advanced" and "Expert" (the hardest). Also, they come in two distinct types called "Challenge mode": "Invasion", where there are many (usually 6 to 8) but shorter waves of robots and "Endurance", where there are few (usually 3) but longer waves.

All missions are available in both Boot Camp and Mann Up modes; on the latter some of them can be part of a Tour of Duty, wich requires a ticket to participate and, upon completion, may award exclusive items such as a Botkiller weapon.

August 15, 2012 Patch (Mann vs. Machine Update)

August 23, 2012 Patch

• Added difficulty text "Normal" and "Advanced" to the MvM scoreboard when playing official Valve missions.
• Server browser will now show MvM mission name in the "map" column. (E.g. "mvm_mannworks_advanced")

September 4, 2012 Patch

• Fixed the party leader’s mission completions showing in the game lobby instead of your own.
