Flammekasteren Pyroens standard primærvåpen. Det er en lang stålstang koblet til en propantank med en slange. En liten evigbrennende flamme brenner ved munnstykket. Utløseren er laget av en lagfarget gasspumpe.

Når du trykker primæravfyring vil våpenet skyte en strøm av flammepartikler i omtrent 22.5 flammepartikler per sekund framover på en bekostning av omtrent 12.5 ammunisjon per sekund. Partiklenes rekkevidde er mye kortere enn hva grafikken sier, men den blir ikke stoppet av fiender eller deres bygninger, som gjør den ideel for å angripe flere fiender på en gang. Flammekasterens rekkevidde er meget begrenset, men kan gjøre stor skade i nærkamp. På lengre avstand er ikke flammekasteren treffsikker nok til å gjøre konstant skade mot en enkelt fiende. Husk at våpenet kan ikke brukes under vann, da det vil kun lage harmløse bobler.

Annet en direkte skade, så tar flammekasteren og setter fiender i fyr og flamme, noe som legger til ekstra skade over kortere tid. Pyroer er immune mot dette på grunn av sinne flammesikre drakter, men de tar fortsatt direkte skade fra flammekasteren. En Spion utkledd som en Pyro vil fortsatt ta fyr. Etterbrenningen kan bli slukket av en Førstehjelpspistol, en Ladestasjon, kontakt med vann, vennlig Jarate, vennlig Mad Milk, et luftstøt, sekundærangrepet til en vennlig Mannsmelter, en Spy-cicle, en Dead Ringer eller hvilken som helst Helseboks. Om du bruker flammekasterens primæravfyring på en vennlig Huntsman-bærende Snikskytter antenner pilen, og en fiende some er truffet av denne pilen vil ta fyr.

Sekundæravfyring får våpenet til å gi fra seg et luftstøt som kan sende tilbake fiendtlige prosjektiler, skyve motstandere unna og slukke brennende lagkamerater. Hvert luftstøt koster 20 ammunisjon, som gir deg 10 luftstøt før det er nødvendig å skaffe mer ammunisjon.

NB: Ildskade er proporsjonal til partiklenes levetid istedenfor avstand fra målet Ulikt de fleste våpen er kritiske treff er også påvirket av dette. I tilleg er de en veldig liten skadeforskjell (±0.08 / partikkel) begrunnet forskjeller i partikkelvinkler.

Bugs

  • Rarely, when the Flame Thrower is turned off during full crits, the flame effect can still be seen though the fix of the loophole, unlike a similar bug with the Minigun, the "flame" can only be seen by the player.

Trivia

  • Modern flamethrowers were first used in the trench warfare in World War I.
  • Beta builds of Team Fortress 2 featured a hose connecting the Pyro's back canister to the Flamethrower. However, upon release, the hose was redirected to a propane tank on the weapon.
    • The hose is still visible in the Pyro's HUD icon.
