Styles are alternate versions of hats and Miscellaneous items. Introduced in the Hatless Update on April 14, 2011, styles enable the player to alter the visual form of the hat at any time from the backpack menu. Styles applied to items do not affect the painted status or tradability of the item. Current styles range from being alterations to an item's painting scheme or to having the item use a separate model entirely.

Update history
April 14, 2011 Patch (Hatless Update)
- Added the "styles" backpack mechanic.
- Added "styles" for the Ghastlier Gibus, Treasure Hat, Hat of Undeniable Wealth And Respect, and the Googly Gazer.
- Added new paint styles to the Pyromancer's Mask and the Scotsman's Stove Pipe.
- Added a missing material for the Scotsman's Stove Pipe.
- Added new styles to the Troublemaker's Tossle Cap.
Bugs
- When a style is active that mimics the appearance of another hat, it is displayed as that hat when inspected by other players.
- The Ghastlier Gibus is incorrectly placed if the Ghastly style is active. Some Sniper players take advantage of this to throw off headshots.
- The Scotsman's Stove Pipe loses alot of its detail when the Garish and Overbearing style is active, similar to a lot of paintable hats before the December 2, 2010 Patch. The difference is noticeable even without paint.
