The Night of the Living Update is an unofficial fan update featuring over 90 items and 7 Halloween-themed maps. This update follows the day-by-day release style used by many official updates, as well as the Fancy vs. Nasty Update and the Medieval Update.

- The update's name is a reference to the 1968 film Template:W by Template:W. Individual content pages also parody horror film titles;
- Mill references the Template:W film series.
- It Came From Outer Badlands references Template:W.
- The Curse of the Were-Sandvich references Template:W.
- Creature from the Loch DeGroot references Template:W.
- Witchcraft IX: The Smelting Hour references Template:W and its many sequels.

- In the movie summaries, each class are given a "real" name. While officialy confirmed names like "Jane Doe" (the Soldier, even though this might be a nickname), "Tavish DeGroot" (the Demoman) and Dell Conagher (the Engineer) are used, the other classes were named "Chip Runfast" (the Scout), "Macarena Delgado" (the Pyro), "Ivan Ivanov" (the Heavy Weapons Guy), "Josef Heilburger" (the Medic), "Richard 'Dick' Mundy" (the Sniper, whose name "Mundy" was officialy confirmed) and "Pierre McFrance" (the Spy). Another name is also mentioned, "Marisa Tomei", but it is unknown who he is supposed to be known as.
