Talk:Katyusha
Identity of the item
The item most resembles the 1972-1983 padded canvas TSh-4M Tankovij šlem (tanker helmet). The items's specific distinctive Soviet features are the 4 padded ribs over the top, rectangular forehead and backhead pads, pads above the ears with overlying headphone band, and pads on the ears with headphone speakers.
The 30s-60s models had only three ribs; later models have 6 ribs.
The 1972-1982 version was modified for Soviet paratroopers by removing the ear pads, since they did not use headphones on their jumps.
- "The name "Katyusha" is foremostly associated with BM-13, a Soviet rocket artillery vehicle of the WWII era."
Irrelevant: This is true, but not related to the item.
- "The item's name and description refer to the Tupolev ANT-40, ..."
This is partial speculation. Yes, it is quite clear that the description mentions an airplane, and OR observes that there was a Soviet plane called "Katyusha". Yeah, maybe the modeler thought it was also a pilots hemlet, but I just don't see evidence for pilots using it. From their response to a comment on the item's workshop page, the creator does seem to think that this tanker helmet is a jet pilot's cap, and called it "Katyusha" from some "jet plane". It is not a pilot's cap.
However, this is not the only reasonable basis for the name. Note also that there is no example of an aviator's cap that has any padding remotely suggestive of this item.
It is also unmistakably observable that the Girls und Panzer character Katyusha wears a distinctively post-WWII Soviet Tanker helmet.
It is actually stronger Trivia that the Katyusha character wears the same model of TSh-4M that Heavy can wear.
I recommend the recent Russian tank movie Indestructible. The movie happens to show how the WWII TSh-4 is different from Heavy's 1970s model.

- As best as I can tell, the creator thought the 1970s item was a 1930s jet pilot cap and was not aware of the Katyusha character, even though commenters are aware of the Katysha character.
- So, I would add to Trivia "Concidentally, the same Soviet tanker helmet is worn by the Girls und Panzers character Katyusha.

- This would be a simple observation, if the creator doesn't confirm that it's a reference it's not worth nothing because it has nothing to do with each other (This is identical to the example given in the guidelines for Observation).

Boyz und Panzer (Hilarious IRL!)
This clip is hilarious, given the above.
1970s East German "Panzer Brigade" clearly records Young Pioneers wearing adult-sized TSh-4M padded canvas tanker helmets now modeled in TF2 as "Katyusha".
While Western Boy Scouts were playing CTF Mode, Communist boys were throwing live smoke bomb hand grenades, firing cap guns, driving tanks, and ...
... but wait, the irony gets even more ironic! Sparkwire confusingly thought the tanker helmet was a jet fighter cap ...
"... what did the Air Cadets have? Half scale MIG 15s? Oh, Holy Crap!" (Actually, that bit is recent hobbyist footage.)
The wiki-relevant point is how this video under pins the fame of the 1972-1983 Soviet TSh-4M padded canvas tanker helmet.
