- No. This is already used on the Black Box page. The wiki just seems vain if it uses the same quotes over and over again.--Focusknock 08:41, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
- No I agree with Focusknock. That quote is already being used for the Black Box, and frankly it is better suited to that page. Also, "Hippo-crates" never gets old! -- Alex2539 08:46, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
- Yes I agree with lund. There are lots of other unused quotes that would be better suited. FlotsamX 01:04, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
- Neutral For this idea, though I have no idea if it's been used, I would suggest *"Another satisfied customer!"" from the Engineer. :) --Fragment of Nothing 19:05, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- I like the Engie quote much more. The Scout quote was bugging me because it was like we don't know who Hippocrates is. Fate Soul Blake 20:30, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
- I think the Engie quote is already used in the Trading article. But we do need a new one. – Cructo [T][C] 20:32, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
- Oh yeah you're right. Well then. Looks like I'll need to search for a new one then! Fate Soul Blake 20:59, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Description
You need a Mann Co. Supply Crate Key to open this. You can pick one up at the Mann Co. Store.
"This crate contains one of the items listed in its description. To unlock the crate and retrieve the item, you must use a Mann Co. Supply Crate Key, which can be purchased inside the Mann Co. Store. These crates contain one of the rarest and most valuable items in the game, so cross your fingers before you unlock them!" Mann Co. Catalog
How is it obtained?
Is it found through drops?--Jordan 10:59, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
- Yes I just got one dropped. Now I just need a key... Dzjudz 15:49, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
- The crates drop randomly, the keys to open them are purchase-only. -RJ 15:50, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
How is it randomized?
Does each item have the same chance of being uncrated, or is there a weighted system?--Gatherto
- Maybe we should put a percentage table on the page so people can post what they got?--Corrderio
- I collected some data from SPUF based on that
- From what we got so far(114 samples) there is
- 38.59% chance of getting an old weapon
- 21.05% chance of getting a hat
- 20.17% chance of getting a paint can
- 9.64 % chance of getting a name tag
- 7.89 % chance of getting a polycount weapon
- 2.63 % chance of getting an unusual hat --Banished one 10:03, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
I'm not so sure that the data should be on the page just yet. It's still new, can we confirm those observations? --Fragment of Nothing 10:10, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
I currently have a thread on the Steam forums [1] where I'm tallying up what people have opened so far. Currently, a total of 326 crates. I just hope it helps with the statistics. --Toahpt 17:07 7 October 2010 (EST) As of 22:41, 7 October, There's a total of 687 crates tallied on my thread. I'm sure the number will continue to grow. --Toahpt
No, but the page does say "It may contain content that is inaccurate or undocumented" at the top. I thought we should have some numbers to give people a vague idea about what to expect from a crate.--Banished one 10:22, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
- Out of the eight I have opened, 2 gunslingers, 2 scottish resistance, 2 black paint, 1 white paint, 1 old guadalajero. Hope that helps at all.Rhonlore 01:36, 7 October 2010 (UTC)
What does it drop like?
Does it have the same drop rate as an item, a hat, or its own drop rate?--Gatherto
i'm not sure if it has it's own drop rate but certainly it's not as rare as a hat.--Banished one 10:53, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
- I'm led to believe that the drop rate is similar if not the same as weapons... – Smashman (talk) 11:05, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
- From my experience one usually drops for each player every week. So it's not as rare as a hat but it doesn't drop as often as weapons. The timer is somewhere in between the two. Moussekateer 15:38, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
- I think the crates have their own drop "schedule" separate from standard items, as I've gotten double-drops with an item + a crate before in the middle of gameplay, and I got a crate about 2 minutes after getting an item once. I've also gotten crates completely by themselves with no items shortly before or after. They're slightly less frequent than item drops, but still fairly common. My experience has been ~1 crate for every 6 to 10 items, or 1 or 2 crates per week. Will-T 21:26, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- I've also noticed this. I've seen double drops with Crates, Name Tags and Description Tags. I would hazard a guess that there are two drop timers. One for weapons/hats, one for tools. Maybe the hats are separate too? I think this discussion should move over to the Item Drop System page. I'll start discussion there on this topic. Iloverice 23:55, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Drop rate table
Would it be possible to have in this section of the talk page a freely editable drop rate table based on what users get in the crate? For example, this is the data I have so far:
Item Given | Number of Times | Odds* |
---|---|---|
Vita-Saw | 46 | 8.7% |
Gunslinger | 63 | 12.6% |
Equalizer | 57 | 10% |
Scottish Resistance | 57 | 11% |
Old Guadalajara | 57 | 10.94% |
Napper's Respite | 58 | 10.2% |
Name Tag | 65 | 12.6% |
An Extraordinary Abundance of Tinge | 58 | 11.3% |
A Distinctive Lack of Hue | 53 | 10.2% |
Exceedingly Rare Special Item! | 10 | 1.92% |
468 |
* Odds accurate as of 11:56PM UTC October 7.
Sorry for making possibly the world's worst looking table but I wanted to make sure to post this so I didn't forget. Binerexis 22:49, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

- Will suffer horribly from sampling error. Just saying. -The Neotank ( | Talk) 23:01, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
- I can add a bit more anecdotal data, if that'll help: 2 Vita-Saw, 3 Scottish Resistance, 1 Gunslinger, 4 Napper's Respite, 2 Old Guadalajara, 2 Name Tag, 2 Distinct Lack of Hue. RukiTanuki 06:22, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
If someone could add a 'total' row and work out the percentage drop rate for the data collected so far (maybe make the table look better while they're at it) then I would be very, very grateful. Would do it myself but just sneaking a peak at work. Binerexis 12:22, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

- Added data for 67 unboxings that have occurred on my servers since saturday, 67 unboxed out of a total of 271 dropped (8% of drops, the highest amount out of any item).--Geit 22:27, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

- Old Guadalajara in my second crate, added odds for the moment. Probably don't need to update them every time you add something, maybe every 20 or so added, recalculate. TheChrisD Rants•Edits 04:00, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
- Just got a vita- saw, didn't fix up the odds yet, just changed the vitasaw and total count
- Added the items I've got from my 3 crates so far: Scottish Resistance, Scottish Resistance, Old Guadalajara--KefkaticFanatic 01:23, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- Added the items I got last night. 2 Scottish Resistance. (rage) -- ShunyValdez 02:08, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

- That's a pretty good idea actually. It'd be a good idea to maybe start adding more alternate sources other than SPUF and YouTube to that sheet, although I'm not sure if we can use data on this page unless it's sanitized, given that I think data already from the SPUF thread has been added. Nonetheless, I'll see what I can dig up and add the data when I get the chance. TheChrisD Rants•Edits 04:20, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
- I try to verify unusual drops based on the SPUF poster's steam community page and tf2items.com. If I can't verify the item I will either add the drop to the Data tab with a comment or ignore the poster if the odds of dropping the item are out of line with what the statistics show. So far I haven't seen a lot of trolling. Schmoe 15:51, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
- We can also add another set of worksheets to the spreadsheet that would only include youtube sources, however I think the dataset would be a lot smaller though 100% verifiable. So far my spreadsheet doesn't fall far off mark, but it would be interesting to compare them. Schmoe 16:10, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
- I still continue to add more to my OP of the thread. I don't have as many sample crates of series 1 as the spreadsheet, but I have more samples of 3, 4, and 5. Just thought I should let everyone know. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1483294 --Toahpt

- Added new rows from crate series 2 and data from the past couple of days on my servers--23:21, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
If this drop table is added to the main page, I believe it should be simplified to Weapons, Hats, Tools, and Unusual Hats. Just a thought, though. --Toahpt
- With the addition of the Series 2 crate, the table should be changed to reflect that if we assume that the drop rate is the same in every crate (which seems to be a fairly safe solution). The alternative would be to have a Series 1 table and a Series 2 table. The data from both of them (as in specific items) should NOT be on the same table as the percent chances will not be reflective of individual crates but rather if all items available had a chance of coming from every crate dropped. Binerexis 13:10, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
The new drop rate table only takes into account server logs? What methodology did you use to separate rare Series 1 and Series 2 drops? All in all it falls in line with the stats collected by the steam forum pages, but I think it assumes that rare drops are equally likely to occur in either series. Actually it looks like the SPUF posters must have overstated their Series 2 hat drops which falls in line with my expectations of human behavior. For example a user that opened 5 crates could have reported only one of the crates which the user was proud of. Same goes for rare items which is why I added another column for verified drops. Maybe I should extend it to more than just rare drops. Schmoe 16:33, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
- I dug up Luigi30's SPUF post regarding this data. He was unable to account for how rare items dropped according to series. Could be minor, but it makes a large assumption. I've added a note regarding rare items to the drop rate table section. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=17708725&postcount=866
- I have no way to determine which series crate a rare item dropped from within the TF2 framework. I've emailed Robin about this but haven't gotten a response. :( LuigiThirty 02:01, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
- Also added a note regarding the assumption that crates drop uniformly across all series. In other words are series #1 dropping less often than #2? Does the server logs account for this? Schmoe 17:03, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
- Series 1 crates are more a little more common in my log than series 2 since they were introduced (it's a 54/46 split), but that could be accounted for by them existing 6 days prior to the introduction of Series 2. An equal chance for each one is likely. LuigiThirty 02:01, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
Does series 1 still drop?
Does series 1 still drop? -Ravedave 01:53, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

- I received both crates 4 and 5. I'm guessing someone messed up the wiki.
Uncrate/Unbox
Whenever I open a crate and then return to the game, the chat reads 'has unboxed', not 'has uncrated' as stated on this page. Is uncrated even a word?--Focusknock 08:42, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
- It should be "unboxed", uncrated is probably a mistranslation. --Banished one 19:36, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
- The yellow text in the introduction is very ugly to read on a white background. Apparently the Font Color template doesn't work on the TF2 wiki. (at least, according to it failing on me) -- AileTheAlien 21:11, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
Crate drops use a different distribution system
"Dropped crates do not count as part of the weekly drop cap, but are instead part of a different distribution system." Is there a source or reasoning for this?--Mechlord 00:52, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
-I believe there was an email from Robin regarding this, in which he stated it was on a different drop system, so those who rely on drops for items weren't left in the cold. Zombie James 16:37, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
- I would love to see a link to this email. It'll be informative and a good addition to the wiki. ShunyValdez 02:04, 22 October 2010 (UTC)
- Poking through the history, this was removed as "unsourced" by editor Binerexis on October 12, 2010. So yes, it would be nice if this could be confirmed, but as is, the article doesn't mention it at all. --Itsatrap 19:39, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Doesn't this seem a bit odd?
It seems a bit odd that in Series #1, the two hats are the most commonly gained items, when hats are normally rare via the drop system... AbeX300 04:05, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
- Based on the data in the table above, it does seem that the new hats drop at a fair rate but the data isn't from the entire population of TF2 or even from a representative sample, it's just from people who have very kindly submitted their data. The more people we can get to submit data, the better. Binerexis 13:13, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
- Well, you also have less chance to get semi-rare items like paint cans or the name tag. I think these values are just the result of Valve's first attempt with crates. Ercho 15:13, 29 November 2010 (UTC)
Crates can drop crates?
See SPUF thread. The only report I've come across. Any confirmation?-RJ 12:18, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
- No crate has ever dropped a crate on my server. LuigiThirty 01:58, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
- No proof and no updates in a while (or new threads with the same).Seems it's only a rumor. Ercho 15:10, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Drop rates and their factuality...
I really don't think we should rely on community feedback for the drop rates of items in crates. I just think a) the sample sizes are way too small to run a proper statistical analysis on, and b) it's too easily manipulated. I'd like to have a discussion on it, but my proposal is to disregard these unofficial statistics completely, as wiki editors. ~ lhavelund
(t ▪ c) 03:31, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
- I added stats based on logs directly from my server (with a 5000+ crate sample size) and plugged them instead. The numbers look a lot more consistent now. LuigiThirty 01:58, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
Steam users crate reports
I've been comparing the data collected in the Steampowered thread compared to my server's logs and I've noticed that in the series 1 crates, the Vita-Saw seems to be underrepresented while Old Guadalajara and Napper's Respite seem to be overrepresented. This may be a consequence of people not wanting to say they got a Vita-Saw but bragging that they got hats. LuigiThirty 04:19, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- I thought exactly that. Somewhat similar with the Unusual reports too. The initial numbers were at 2.5% for the series 1 and 1.5% for the Series 2. I have to say I think trading server statistics seem somewhat reliable for the purposes of estimating drop rate. Lemon 00:28, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Series 3,4,5 crate statistics
Their sample size is extremely small, to the point where they're statistically unsound and useless. I'm going to remove them until User:LuigiThirty, or anyone else, has more reliable data. Moussekateer 17:34, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
- I have slightly reliable data at the moment. Most people tell me that the samples aren't accurate because people only tell me what they got if it was bad or if it was good. Considering people do both, I'd say it's fairly accurate. --Toahpt
- Will there be actual statistics of these crates in the near future? M-NINJA 11:52, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Multiple crate series for a single crate?
Over on TF2Items.net it will sometimes list a crate in someone's backpack as being from 2 "series," with "Crate series #X" on one line and "Crate Series #Y" on a second line below that. So it could say "Crate Series #5, Crate Series #1." Usually both lines will be the same number, but still, I've seen a significant number of crates with two different numbers on them. What does this mean? Is it just a glitch with TF2Items.net? I know that crates are never listed as being from more than 1 series in-game. Will-T 19:06, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Unusual drop rate
So I've gotten around to calculating the actual unusual unboxing rate universally and it's 0.7042%, but I can't split that up into crate series since I don't know what crates had what inside, just that those items appeared. I do know that the rate has held constant since I started tracking the data on October 14. I'm not sure how to add this in there. LuigiThirty 08:27, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

I think we should remove "%" in the table cells because the headers already indicate the unit between brackets (Drop rate (%), Estimated drop rate (%)) and it overloads the page. --Giraf 11:50, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

When Crate Item is determined
Ok, I was wondering when the item inside a crate was determined (after giving away a crate that yielded an unusual) so I emailed Robin Walker. He explained to me that the item inside a crate is actually determined when you open the crate, so it wouldn't contain anything until you apply a key to it, then the game rolls the dice. Those aren't his exact words, but I have uploaded an image of the email here. http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/File:Robin_Crate_Answer.jpg --Palehorse864 11:26, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

Unusual Hat drop type
Are unusual hat uncrates restricted to the kinds of hats a particular crate series can drop, or can any kind of unusual hat pop out from any kind of crate? Got my first unusual from a festive crate and it was a Gonzila, just like the proper normal hat drop from the crate. -Object404 02:26, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
- They're not tied usually, because there are plenty of unusual hats around that aren't crate hats. The Festive crates are a special case it seems. —Moussekateer·talk 02:30, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

Re: Festive Winter Crate Expiration Results
I definitely confirm that my festive winter crates were replaced by random weapons (I had just logged into the Mann Co Store before logging out of the game, so I would have been alerted about all item drops already). Upon my next login, I was puzzled as I was immediately greeted by three new random weapon drops. My backpack was then missing my three winter crates. I hung around a trade server and asked people about their crates and we saw them change/vanish in realtime as we were all from different timezones. One guy in the server had 11 winter crates and they were all replaced by series 1-5 crates upon rollover with him. How about with you guys? -Object404 02:47, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Crate with highest Unusual drop rate
Do we have any definitive results proving series #1 has the highest Unusual drop rate? Keys are expensive so i am sure we would all like to maximize our chances. Also, the festive crates seemed to have a high drop rate as well. Turtlebolt 05:18, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

It doesn't fit on the article, because it has nothing to do specifically with crates. It is a parody of TF2, and I'm sure there's some silly article for that sort of thing. VOTE: Should crates be listed in reverse chronological order?
I vote yes because I feel that it would be most useful to Wiki viewers if the crates were listed in reverse chronological order (30, 29, 28, 27, ...) rather than in chronological order (1, 2, 3, 4, ...) as they are now. This is primarily because most users are likely to be much more interested in what was in the more recent, active crates than the early renditions. - Kanosea 20:04, 13 October 2011 (PDT)
- Perhaps the "Retired series" and "Active series" sections should just be switched around, so that the "Active series" are on top. This seems simpler than reversing the entire order. OldManJenkins 20:16, 13 October 2011 (PDT)
- Oppose Chronological order is how most (I say most incase of that one item that isn't) things are organized. E.g. Update History. I do understand what you are saying so if it were to satisfy, why don't we place active crates at the top of the page. (Stupid Edit conflicts) 20:17, 13 October 2011 (PDT)
- I like that. I think we should move the active series to the forefront of the page (and list it redundantly at the end if people want). I see no reason why this would hurt anything. - Kanosea 20:21, 13 October 2011 (PDT)
- Support putting Active Series first but otherwise keeping chronological order. -- Mar 20:28, 13 October 2011 (PDT)
- Support I think whatever order we put the sections in, it should be sequential. Either Active Series first in reverse chronological order (31-26, then 25-1), or Active Series last in forward chronological order (1-25, then 26-31).
- Support It makes much more sense to have them in reverse, from newest to oldest. 404: User Not Found (talk) 17:07, 16 October 2011 (PDT)

Speaking of the Naughty/Nice Crates, the formatting seems to be a bit wonky on the page. I'm assuming this'll be fixed once we've got contents listed, but right now there's a big space between Nice and Naughty. -an incoherent rambling by iamtehlolrus 21:09, 10 December 2011 (PST)
The 'festiver bat' is not listed. Perhaps there are 10 festiver items and 9% each instead of 9 items and 11% each item or the 'festiver bat' may be the rare item. Also looking for any official word about the strange festiver weapon percentage rate. --7runks 06:07, 17 December 2011 (PST)
Trivia about festive keys
I saved 2 festive keys from last year, and tried opening a naughty crate with them. They "don't apply to this item" right now. Don't know if people were curious or not. --Vercci 19:46, 12 December 2011 (PST)
Firstly those keys should have been changed into regular keys. Thespy 20:27, 15 December 2011 (PST)
Nice Crate contents
I edited Ebenezer and Holiday Headcase out of there because the update page clearly says there are 14 items in the crates, there's no proof of anyone unboxing either yet and both their descriptions state that they were "donated" which makes it sound like they're going to be free somehow (most likely tied to that upcoming "treasure hunt" thing).
- Also I'm kind of bad at counting so some kind soul could edit the percentages to match the amount of items. Roo 02:42, 17 December 2011 (PST)
naughty crate quality distribution statistics
took a look at tf2stats, which has fairly large sample sizes on these items already
for the rocket launcher, flamethrower, sticky launcher, minigun, sniper rifle, and knife: the distribution is about 1 strange in every 8 items (~12.5% chance to be strange)
for the scattergun, wrench and medigun: the distribution is about 1 strange in every 14 items (~7.1% chance to be strange)
for the bat: the distribution is the opposite of the above items, with a 7.1% chance of NOT being strange
I'm not sure how this can be concisely conveyed in the main article, but here's the raw information.
Stripedy 16:56, 17 December 2011 (PST)
and another thing, festive bats are (according to tf2stats) much rarer than the other festives, so the current percentages on the main article are probably flawed. Stripedy 17:05, 17 December 2011 (PST)

Identical items from crates
Whenever I open crates of the same series one after the other, I always seem to receive the same item drop. For example, a few days ago I opened 3 series 34 crates consecutively and received 3 Strange Atomizers. This has happened to me almost every time I have opened crates. Strange Parts
Hopefully someone can come up with a better way to add the specific Strange Part types into the crates' drop tables. I felt it was necessary information but I'm new at this and didn't want to potentially screw up the dictionary by adding a new entry for each variation of the item. Cmx 21:04, 22 March 2012 (PDT)

Crate 30 no longer dropping?
The page was edited today to mention that Crate #30 no longer drops, but I've heard no other mention of that, and it wasn't listed in the changes for today's update, undocumented or otherwise. Can anyone confirm that this is true? Evang7 00:23, 23 March 2012 (PDT)

- I've sent a message to the hlds mailing list, so hopefully the discrepency between the schema and items_game.txt (which is supposed to be generated from the schema) will be sorted out soon. - We don't know. The schema doesn't define what drops, that's up to the item server. So take what the schema says with a pinch of salt. And afaik the online schema overrides items_game.txt. —Moussekateer·talk 10:26, 24 March 2012 (PDT)

Crate 40 rarity?
I've not seen a single one. I don't even think they're dropping. Yoshiboshi3 21:09, 23 March 2012 (PDT)
- From the discussion topic above it appears that there is a bug causing crate 30 to drop in place of 40, as they are both marked as salvaged crates in the item schema. Cmx 23:08, 23 March 2012 (PDT)
The naming and positioning may be the issue. They might have to remove the 30 from the schema or make an exception to fix it. 7runks 00:22, 24 March 2012 (PDT)

Regarding crate topics above
I think it's important to note that the attributes for crate series you see in the schema aren't necessarily representative of the series you will see in a backpack. The drop system can and does attach overriding crate series attributes. This is how early/discontinued crates continue to exist in your backpack. There is indeed an inconsistency in the schemas but the schema itself does not control the series that might drop. I don't know what weight this has on the above discussions but it is something that should be considered when deciding on how you edit the page. Remember that a lot of people trust the wiki's pages as the word of god.
The tracker and OPTF2 itself gets the client schema from the value stored in the same items_game field you see in the tracker files themselves. -- Lagg 19:42, 24 March 2012 (PDT)

Strange items in #53 crates?
Does the Nice winter crates (series #53) have strange items? The Naughty crates clearly state "some , but not all of the items in this crate are strange." This advisory is absent from the Nice crate screen capture. Perhaps consider removing the "Weapons obtained from this crate might have the Strange quality" description from the wiki entry on the Nice crates until it is confirmed that Nice crates have strange items? -- Jmudge 05:36, 14 December 2012 (PST)

Chance Percentages
Someone on my server just purchased two keys from me, and then immediately unboxed 2 crate 57's, receiving about 2.66 ref worth of stranges. His rationale was that the wiki says all items from that crate are at a 0% chance at unbox, while the unusual chance is 1%. He interpreted this as meaning that crate 57 was a guaranteed unusual. While only his own sheer stupidity is to blame, perhaps something other than numbers could be used as placeholders until the true percentages can be determined? At the time of this writing, Crate 57 is shown to have 6 items it can yield, each with a 0% chance.Ddhoward 14:57, 19 March 2013 (PDT)
- Unusuals obviously are at a set rate. We assume 1% since its a very low chance. As for percentages I believe we either assume or someone actually calculated those values. But for sure unusual rates never change unless valve states otherwise. Ashes 15:01, 19 March 2013 (PDT)

Note the disclaimer that says used items are not included in the percentage count (which would explain the apparent rare chance of the Strange Bacon Grease) and the non-exact chances of the other items. - Well, it's May 13th, and they updated the description. It says that it'll contain Unusual Effects that can only come from that crate. Can you make your own unusual hats now? NeoSlith 19:28, 13 May 2013 (PDT)

- Hey I noticed someone wrote on the Robo-Crate it will contain an exceedingly rare robot-themed special item. I saw someone unbox the Conquistador from the robo-crate. It did have one of the new unusual effects on it, but it was not a robo-hat. I think we should change the crate to say "Or an exceedingly rare special item!" TheNoobThatWas 17:04, 18 May 2013 (PDT)
- Well, I can confirm that other hats also can have new effects(http://www.tf2outpost.com/trade/10876467), but doesn't the "robo-themed" just mean that there are robo-themed unusual effects? If so, it should maybe be changed in something like "or an Exceedingly Rare Special Item with Robo-Themed effects". Light08 17:26, 18 May 2013 (PDT)
- We gotta keep it consistent so look at the other crates and make sure it is consistent if its being changed. Ashes 17:33, 18 May 2013 (PDT)

Robocrate sound
Woo 69! Anyways, should we add that the Robocrate has it's own uncrate sound? i think i was watching a Star video of uncrating it when the uncratement of the Robocrates had a different, explosion-like sound. Unless he just added these sound effects i think it is real. I will test this out myself and come back to this soon. Weirdduder10 14:29, 26 May 2013 (PDT)
- It does have its own unique sound when unboxing. Much like unwrapping a present. However If the lather was not noted about sound, I don't think it should be noted either. Ashes 15:08, 26 May 2013 (PDT)

Dividing Active Crates into Rare/Common
I think we're getting to a point now where it might be a wise idea to start thinking about dividing the active crates into common and rare groups. What does everyone else think? Theharribokid (talk) 14:44, 22 November 2013 (PST)

Uncommon active series List is very long
Wouldn't it be wiser to make that an expandable section? Since there are so many in relation to how often they drop it's not very interesting for someone who wants to know what crates are currently active, and those crates are beyong their prime-time. Thoughts? Baraklava 13:06, 9 February 2014 (PST)
Mann Co. Supply Munitions?
So what do we plan to do now that crates have become Mann Co. Supply Munitions? Should we create a separate page for munitions, or should we just briefly mention that crates have become munitions as of series 82, and have an item infobox up for them like we did for special crates? -MarioMaster2008 (talk) 09:52, 2 April 2014 (PDT)

Split the page to another page
Since the crate has been added for years, more than 50 series of crates exist. I think we should move the Common active series, Rare active series, Uncommon active series and Retired series in to separate pages to reduce the time to find a single series and easier to look. Rikka Takanashi (talk) • (contributions) 11:42, 5 April 2014 (PDT)

My recent edits to crate 90 and 92 regarding the rare attribute to some stranges (AWPer Hand/Ullapool Caber for crate 90; Kritzkrieg for 92) were reverted. The reason was that "the community is confused with this info". However, having them displayed at the same chance as any other item in the crate is even more misleading, if you ask me.
Can we find a compromise solution to at least makes it clear that these three items have a much lower unbox rate? - Selbi (talk) 02:45, 18 March 2015 (PDT)
- Hi, nobody really knows the correct rate, I think it's best left that way, because that information is not 100% correct. (my opinion) I agree that there is actually lower rate from new crates (I tried Crate #92, I really want one Kritz), but without the real information is probably impossible. -By your friend(or not)『Tark』(Talk|Contribs|Steam) 04:10, 18 March 2015 (PDT)
- But there is real information for it. Maybe not the exact unbox rates, but definitely a categorization within the item scheme. - Selbi (talk) 13:55, 18 March 2015 (PDT)
- If you compare the Strange Wingers and Strange AWPers using stats.tf it's pretty clear that the unbox rate is 1% or lower. The wiki listing rare stranges as 1% is much more accurate than an obviously wrong 9%-12%. Rolen47 (talk) 00:00, 28 March 2015 (PDT)

Crate #92 unbox rate
- Candy Cane: 7671
- Dalokohs Bar: 7983
- Warrior's Spirit: 7449
- Apoco-Fists: 7666
- Red-Tape Recorder: 7455
- Claidheamh Mòr: 1652
- Wrangler: 1676
- Shahanshah: 1623
- Cloak and Dagger: 1671
- Buff Banner: 1594
- Righteous Bison Strangifier: 140 (Plus 493 Strange Rightous Bisons)
- Kritzkrieg: 4779 (Most of these came from Crate #30, getting it from crate #92 is probably less than 1% chance)
Numbers from stats.tf. Pretty clear that the first 5 items have a much higher chance than the last 5 items. First 5 items seem to be around 80.37% while the last 5 are around 16.63%. The Righteous Bison Strangifier also appears to have a very low unbox rate. Going to edit the table now. Rolen47 (talk) 13:52, 11 May 2015 (PDT)
- So, for me, i will leave from this discuss, it's a very stupid thing, this is very irrelevant and nobody know the real value (a.k.a. valve rate).— The preceding assigned comment was added by Tark {Finish Him! ▪ Contribs} 16:40, 12 May 2015 (PDT)
- I swear we've had this sort of talk before and i'll just re-iterate my points once again... 1. Stats.tf is not always correct regarding unbox rates. Its a third party site that honestly could have skewed results, so it would not be a reliable source to note these sorts of numbers. 2. Self-calculation based off of previous stats (As you're doing here). As the first point says, stats.tf isn't a reliable statisitics site for noting unbox rates, actually no site is. So the calculations could be wrong no matter how hard you try to prove it. 3. Most of this is practically speculation. If you want real numbers regarding unbox rates, get it from valve however they'll never release in the slightest. Its easier to assume through a uniform model that way nothing can be falsified heavily on skewed results/calculations. Ashes (talk) 18:01, 12 May 2015 (PDT)

Should Valve Make It So There's a Small Chance of Keys Dropping?
I personally, being a F2P user, believe that Valve should implement a system where there's a small chance that keys could drop. AnonymoususerXD45 (talk) 15:15, 18 January 2017 (PST)AnonymoususerXD45
- Heyo, this isn't really place to talk about this. The discussion pages are meant for talking about the content on the page itself. General TF2 chat including suggestions should go to the SPUF, TF2 Sub Reddit or TF2 Hub. Ashes (talk) 06:55, 19 January 2017 (PST)
Should Weapon and Cosmetic Cases have their own page?
Although Cases and Crates work on the same fundamental level, I feel like Cases should be separate from the Crates as they have some major differences. For example, most, if not all Crates have their contents at roughly the same level of rarity, while Cases have tiered contents, with the lower tiers vastly more common than the higher tiers.
Jboby1 (talk) 12:29, 12 August 2017 (PDT)
- considering that Valve has announced some upcoming changes to the case system, I'd say wait until then, as the changes will more than warrant the proposed split. because as of now, the only concrete difference between crates and cases is that many cases required you to pay for them to drop, in addition to paying for a key to open them. (I'm under the impression that the rarity tiers in cosmetic crates is because of simple probability, i.e. each individual item's probability is the same like with a crate but the rarer tiers are simply assigned to fewer items) --Kincyr (talk) 12:54, 22 August 2017 (PDT)
A revisit to that unusual drop rate...
So "recently" this page got corrected to match the observed (and more sensible imo) rolling-20%-upgrade chance that cases follow for determining grade (80% -> 16% -> 3.2% -> 0.8%). Gathering the items in crates for one of my discord bots I noticed that cases (on retried/active series pages) have not been updated to this % and continue to use the arbitrarily nice round numbers they were originally given. I was going to fix this, however there is another problem, these cases all have a total of 101% including unusual drops, whereas all the old crates have a 100% including the unusual percent. This has produced a few questions:
1) Should we disregard the unusual chance in the total and slap a notice that the odds are for non-unusual rolls OR endure some nasty decimals (79.2% -> 15.84% -> 3.168% -> 0.792% - all of which are going to be further divided by the amount of items in those tiers).
2) Should the unusual percent be updated to the observed ~0.66%? This stat is backed up by my personal unbox data in the ~6,000s (crawled from my inventory history), the other user in this talk page (#19), and the tf2 finance article. Comparatively, the current 1% appears to be pulled out of thin air simply because it's the smallest positive integer. It is also mentioned on the Unusual page that the chance is "less than 1%" with the tf2 finance article as a reference.
Personally I don't care too much about issue 1, half of me wants the cleaner numbers and the other half thinks the messy decimals would be more accurate and thus should be done that way. IMO when I look at the percents I don't think about the unusual chance taking away from the percents of other items so being forced to take a side I would pick option 1. On issue 2 I am in favor for changing to the more accurate percent (rubs me the wrong way how we are trying to source everything but continue to use a random number here).
Sorry if this should have been broken up into two talk points but I felt the change of the unusual percent would have an impact on people's opinions for the first question.Jh34ghu43gu (talk) 13:35, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
- If I understand these questions correctly (My brain shuts down when it sees maths, so apologies if I get it wrong), you could have both by having something like "roughly 0.8%" and have the best of both worlds.
GrampaSwood (talk) 15:00, 17 March 2022 (UTC)- Ah yea, that would be perfect for the first issue. Jh34ghu43gu (talk) 15:06, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
