Unused Paint Variants

Hello. So, the unused paint variant tables right now cause the page to have an overflow, specifically, it adds a category "Pages where template include size is exceeded", and the Hat Nav is not shown properly. Mgpt has recently commented them out as they weren't working as properly, and...

I have talked with a couple people, and, I got conflicting suggestions with what should have been done in regards to the limitation. Right now, I don't think it's possible to increase that limitation on every page on the Wiki, meaning we would need to go with a workaround.

One of them mentioned doing X, and the other mentioned doing Y, where I'm more in favor of Y. I don't know if I can name these people, but, feel free to put your opinions below, for the 2 people I talked to in regards to this. As for the suggestions, there are as follows:

a) Separate all UGC Highlander pages with several pages called "Tournament Medal - UGC Highlander Season 3" , "Tournament Medal - UGC Highlander Season 5", "Tournament Medal - UGC Highlander Season 6, 30-31", etc, so unused paint variants wouldn't have this issue as each season would be separated, and the template size wouldn't exceed;

b) Keep the current UGC Highlander page as normal, without different pages per season, but add a "{{hatnote}}" with information that: "Due to technical limitations, the tables for the unused painted variants are available here", where "here", would link to a subpage ("/Unused painted variants") specifically for unused painted variants. Here's a mockup: https://i.imgur.com/ggxl0Jj (after Imgur loads, right-click on the image, and open in a new tab for full view).

I go for letter B, because it's much more convenient, plus, easier to see all unused painted variants as well, and would circumvent the current limitation as these tables wouldn't be in the main page. It also won't break consistency with other Tournament Medals by separating by Seasons, and, because the unused paint vars. are something that isn't even achievable in-game, they could be in just a sub-page without any issue, as it's more of a "niche" interest, in my opinion.

Keep in mind that, while this has only showed up for this page, it could happen in the future, as the Hat Nav template is always growing in size by "Major" update and Content Packs, meaning that, despite me posting this on the UGC Highlander discussion itself, this could be applied to other pages in the future for Unused paint variants that may exceed limits by the time the Hat Nav grows exponentially. Personally, I think option A is a far better long-term solution. Not only do I think it's better because it fixes this issue, but this page is also a huge eyesore. The intro paragraph is a description of 9 medals, the "list of medals" lists 62 medals, the painted variants only lists a single variant of the medals (despite there being many more variants existing. It makes me wonder if it's a lack of paintability or if it's simply unfinished), the gallery is a huge mess with all the different variants having to be displayed. I think splitting up the pages to be named after the first season they were in (and then redirecting the seasons they were reused in to that page, so instead of "UGC Highlander Season 6, 30-31" it would be "UGCH Highlander Season 6" and the page for Season 30/31 would be a redirect to that) would do much more than just fix this painted variants issue, but also fix this messy page.

B is the best option because the issue here is just the unused painted variants and the current page is fine (consistent with other tournament medal pages, although I agree that the list of medals and medal designs sections could be implemented in a different way, but that's another discussion). Splitting the page is not a good idea because it was done in the past if you check the redirects history (for many tournaments, not only UGC). Edit: I forgot to mention the steam redirects, wouldnt work with opt A. Mgpt (talk) 01:04, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm still on Mgpt's side on this one. As it's currently only a problem on this page (I don't even think 4vs4 and 6vs6 variants would have this issue, as they have less medals), the best case is to just put the warning, and link to that subpage. Other Wikis also have certain things with limitations, where they put similar warnings and redirect others to a subpage (MarioWiki is a well formally written Wiki, without the abundance of uninteresting Trivia that other Wikis do, and, in some pages, there's a notice that the gallery section was moved to a new page due to limitations). And yes, not too long ago, Tournament Medals had Seasons separated. They were recently updated so everything related to a Format and a Competitive Scene was grouped into one. Doing the Season split means we would be undo that entire thing that was done a couple years ago, and, personally, I don't think that it's worth it. As you said it, that the page is currently a huge eyesore, but, it's all compacted into one page, where elsewhere, it would be several "little eyesore" pages per season, because Tournament Medal pages will always be like this, even if we separate by seasons. There will always be several types of placements, medal designs, etc, by season alone. Lastly, we have the "Wiki Link" as Mgpt stated, and, I think that even if I start uploading the images on that subpage, it could be easily be moved later if it's necessary (after proper discussion regarding Tournament Medal pages as a whole), as everything uses an "override". Considering there hasn't been a consensus regarding the subject, I will be doing the "b)" suggestion. This should be straightforward and doesn't require editing all the pages, and... if at some point someone wishes to make the "a)" suggestion (after more discussion is made here or elsewhere), then the unused painted variants can be simply put on those pages normally, as all of the sections of the UGC Highlander unused paints use "override" on them, so it's likely that these wouldn't require an rename on their filenames if the "a)" suggestion is made at some point in the future. +1 to "do whatever is easiest". I will note that there also exists option C) Clean up the template (or switch it to Lua) to work around the size limit. This limit is about the raw number of wikitext characters resulting from template expansion, but this is similarly expensive (and I've been avoiding lua where possible, nobody else knows how to use it).
