Format

(Concise explanation and comparison between 6v6 and Highlander. Short mention of other types of competition.)

There are two common formats in the competitive scene: 6vs6 and 9vs9. Below are some traits for each format.

6vs6

  • Teams typically use the following line-up: Scout, Scout, Soldier, Soldier, Demoman, Medic.
  • Almost all unlockable weapons are banned.
  • Standard Control Point maps are most often played.

9vs9

Main article: Highlander

9v9, commonly referred to as Highlander mode, is a special competitive game mode where each team has exactly one of each class. Depending on the league, most weapons are not banned, and while some exceptions may occur, they are few and far between.

Most leagues run a large variety of maps, some official, some unofficial.
