Revival of 'List of Underworlds' table rework project.
Content better contributed to the main articles
+
I saw that the Underworld page is fairly out-of-date, and that there has been a few projects with the aim of redoing the table that appear to have been abandoned.

@BrazilianNut: I agreed that a broad topic article was needed and you did do a lot of writing, but it is a concern that much of what you placed in this page is redundant to what should be in the main articles for each feature. I know you are happy with what is there, but, I pains me to say, I think it is too much.  I Disagree that so much detail is needed in the Broad Topic. On the upside, some of what you put here is good content for the main articles.
+
Based on the existing projects and my own pet peeves, I felt it might be better to simplify it down to just an overall 'Description' column that allows for more open description of the underworlds, with finer details like buffs upon entering/exiting able to go in the 'Details' column. I've created a proof of concept using just Bloodwater, with data copied from the main Underworld page (so it may have inaccuracies or grammatical errors).

I sincerely hope my comments are received as positively as possible.

I can see that you worked on being to be brief with several of the sections (Cauldron, Ghost Fort, Gravestone). Because the descriptions, details and mechanics should be completely covered in the main articles, what should be here should be as brief as possible; I personally prefer a translation switching table (see bottom).

Consists of lava and poisonous air. If a player takes one of MONOCULUS' portals, their health is fully restored and they are transported to a small set of small islands with a few Magic Spells scattered around. Leaving through the white portal takes them back to the control point with a series of temporary buffs, including full Critical hits. Attacking MONOCULUS with these Crits stuns him for a few seconds.

Another location in Purgatory. Players can access it by touching the Bombinomicon that appears once MONOCULUS has been defeated; they must then make their way to the giant skull and get the Bombinomicon in there. Once they do, they are taken back to the control point with a series of buffs and a Rare Magic Spell. Similar to Eyeaduct, the air in Loot Island is harmless, the cease-fire would have ended, and players may attack their enemies on this location. Also, staying here for too long causes the island to explode, killing anyone on it.

* Gravestone: Please consider that the Witching Hour and Bumper Car Race section in the main article are stubs. My hope is that someone contributes to the sections in the main rather than being tempted to expand the paragraphs in this page.

I'm not great at formatting tables, so please let me know what you think of it, and what you would change about it; I hope we can replace the old table after so long!

* Much of you content in Purgatory and Hell for Brimstone could be better contributed to the main Brimstone page.

* Your Cauldron section is reasonably sized, for a textual summary, but second paragraph for Cauldron is much better contributed to the main Cauldron article in its own section.
+
:I think a much simpler table would be better, scrapping all the explanations and just having some basic info similar to what was proposed on Template talk:Water locations table.<br> <span style="color:green;font-family:TF2 Build;">s</span> <font color="DB9C1F">GrampaSwood</font> (<font color="DB9C1F">talk</font>) (<font color="DB9C1F">contribs</font>) 14:28, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

* The Underworld Section for Bumper Cars should/will receive a Merge tag. Clearly the cut an paste of the Bumper Car spells here was unnecessary. It is unnecessary that the summary of the games have as much text the games in the main article.  Where there is content that is in the Underworld sections that is not in the main, you should contribute it to the main article.
+
::I see what you mean yeah, I like how the first of those two tables look given its smaller size would prevent it from being too cramped while still including an image of the underworld itself, though I feel it potentially limits how health/ammo kits in the underworld of varying sizes and amounts can be acknowledged to be in an Underworld to a more specific degree without those also having their own column (off the top of my head of things worth mentioning otherwise is health drain, environmental hazards, entry/exit buffs and spells).<br><font color="7D4071">Kibblekip</font> <font color="803020"><b>T</b></font> | <font color="256D8D"><b>C</b></font> 02:25, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

* The Cursed Cove section is bigger than the Dave Jones' Locker section in the main article, this should be the other way around.  I don't see the benefit of describing the Location here.
+
:::I've tried reformatting it a bit based on the table(s) you linked to be more simplified, and reorganized it slightly.
** "... appears as the bottom of the sea, with algae and corals dotting the landscape. Players will spawn in front of one of the two giant skulls, ..." belongs in Dave Jones' Locker of the main, but not here.

** "Every minute or so in... This points out that timing is missing in the main article.

* Eyeaduct: I wouldn't have added more detail about the cosmetics of the  Locations than is in the present main article.  What is different about your Eyeaduct is that it goes into detail of the buffs, which you do not do for the other sections. I do not suggest that you do that necessarily, even if I really would like to see a comparison of buffs, paragraphs of text is not an effective way of doing that. I think it would be better for a broad topic page to have all the underworlds in a table, with columns for "Picture", "Access", "Exit" "Hazards", "Entry buffs", "Exit buffs", and "Time-limiting effects". Compare this with :Template:List of Halloween maps), rather that trying to textually summaries and compare all of the Halloween maps, the characteristics of the maps were extracted into a terse table.

I'm sorry if I went into too much detail. I guess I got excited with creating the page and let myself get carried away.
+
:::Some things obviously still need improving; ideally the spell types would be easier to differentiate by including their particle effects, hazards could be provided in more detail, and additional features listed, but otherwise I feel this could potentially work? Should be more friendly for translation too, though it is just a mockup for the basic structure.<br><font color="7D4071">Kibblekip</font> <font color="803020"><b>T</b></font> | <font color="256D8D"><b>C</b></font> 22:06, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

My turn to criticize your work. :P
+
::::I think the pickups bit can be removed, just have a checkmark for spells, hazards, health drain, uber/crit on exit maybe, and an additional section for small notes (e.g. "Starts a 3v3" for Moldergrove, but nothing major).<br> <span style="color:green;font-family:TF2 Build;">s</span> <font color="DB9C1F">GrampaSwood</font> (<font color="DB9C1F">talk</font>) (<font color="DB9C1F">contribs</font>) 22:14, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

Although I like the stuff you added, I'd like to point some things out:
+
:::::I guess the pickups section would be somewhat unnecessary yeah. In my head listing buffs could be approached as two checks for 'Buffs on entrance' and 'Buffs on exit' (with exit greyed out if there isnt an exit), with what the specific buffs are listed in the notes section? I feel it is worth clarifying at the least what the buffs are and maybe if rare spells are present within the underworld or not (hazards I feel aren't as important to clarify on).<br><font color="7D4071">Kibblekip</font> <font color="803020"><b>T</b></font> | <font color="256D8D"><b>C</b></font> 22:34, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
* "Underworld can also specifically refer to those haunted islands surrounded by lethal stygian waters" - Slasher and Cauldron both have Underworlds called simply "Underworld" that do not feature stygian waters. Also, "can specifically" sounds a bit... Off, don't you think ("it has the possibility of being specific")? :B

* There is only one Loot Island, and it's the one in Eyeaduct's Purgatory. No other map has used that name.

* Ghost Fort's Skull Island does not have a horned skull, it's the Skull Island in Helltower's Hell that does.

* Technically, only two achievement items "can only be earned in certain Underworld locations": the Bombinomicon and the Unfilled Fancy Spellbook (three if you count the extra Halloween Gift Caudron from Bumper To Bumper To Bumper).

** The Mildly Disturbing Halloween Mask, the Ghastly Gibus, the Haunted Metal Scrap and the items it can be crafted into, the Saxton Hale Mask, and the Necro-Smasher can all be earned outside of Underworlds (while the Necro-Smasher requires playing the bumper car mini-games, if the fourth CoC achievement is Arms Reduction, then it is obtained outside the bumper cars realm).

** The Skull Island Topper is earned on Ghost Fort's Skull Island, which is not an Underworld (I listed it as such because of its similarity with Underworlds, but I made sure that I noted it isn't one).

I think it would be best to remove the "Underworlds" section, to simply have a list of maps with Underworld locations, and, as you said, transfer its contents to the pages of the maps those locations belong to. Yes, I spent a lot of time writing all that, but I think it would be the optimal choice.
+
::::::I would do something like:<br>Cross Health drain<br>Check Hazards<br>Check Speed on entrance<br>Check Speed on exit<br>Check Critical hits on exit<br>Check ÜberCharge on exit.<br> <span style="color:green;font-family:TF2 Build;">s</span> <font color="DB9C1F">GrampaSwood</font> (<font color="DB9C1F">talk</font>) (<font color="DB9C1F">contribs</font>) 22:42, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

: I think you can really help with the corrections updates to the lead bullets. I wrote them before SF 2017, with only a quick limited update late last night. The intention in the bullets is to provide some definition for the common names used on multiple maps, and as you have seen, there are now exceptions. But I think disambiguations could eventually link here for
+
7 The problem is not every underworld heals you on when you enter, some apply a healing buff, some just set your health to max, some do(n't) give uber on entrance, etc. I feel there would be too many factors and inconsistencies to account for with checks, and that it would be better to clarify on the buffs in the extra notes section and just use a basic buff on entrance or exit check. Though if you feel it would still be fine and there isn't a need to be specific about the healing amount and such, we can work with that.<br><font color="7D4071">Kibblekip</font> <font color="803020"><b>T</b></font> | <font color="256D8D"><b>C</b></font> 23:05, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

:* Can you go through the Workshops and game files for the new maps and see if any other Developer's names for Locations are given?

:* I would prefer (I could be wrong) for someone to eventually make up a table to replace the list under List of maps with Underworld locations to the present list, but it it doesn't need to be done immediately. (Honestly, I created Halloween map for my own use as an editor, I needed it to help me to keep all the feaures of the different maps straight as I wrote, but I also hoped that others would appreciate it. If I were to create the table here, I would be in the same spirit. 👻)

:** As it could be a complex table, I wouldn't expect the first version to use translation switching as the content is decided.

:** I think a column each for "Entry Buffs" (most but not all heal, a few overheal) and "Exit Buffs" would be most useful to new users. (Still, the main article should have full textual detail on the Buff.

:** An "Access" column might also be useful to the new player as it is not always obvious. The complete accesses for Brimstone took me hours to fully confirm.  I see hardly anyone using the access coffins in Gravestone (Do they not know or do they not care?)

: Thank you for the discussion.

::::::I added the 'AllowedEditors' template to the page I mentioned above; the table is essentially complete at this point, but as the note says, if anyone feels the table needs any minor adjustments or improvements (visible or just cleanup) do feel free. == The mold is broken ==

So, examining the Underworlds of this update, it is inescapable that there is no consistent application of the common proper names (i.e., Underworld, Purgatory, Hell)  So, I am considering reworking the lead bullets to just a list of the first few innovative Underworlds (essentially, the same list, but with all generality removed) Then work up a list of attributes (e.g., Entry Buffs: No Heal/Full Heal/Overheal; Exit Buffs: Full Heal/Overheal/Invulnerability/Crits;  Hazards: Pitfall/Health Drain/Stygian Waters/Lava/Astral fall/Skeletons/etc.; Access: White Portals (fixed)/Purple (random)/Bombinomicon;  Exit: Portal/Prize Skull/Round; and maybe a last column for Prize/Achievement/Contract. Then it would be fairly easy to make a table, each distinct Underworld getting its own row (e.g., three rows in the table each for Brimstone and Gravestone, but 2 rows for Hellstone. <span style="font-family: Impact"><font color="70B04A">M I K A D O 282</font></span><span style="font-family: Arial "><font color="70B04A"> <small>🎃</small>🎃🎃🎃🎃<small>🎃  🎃🎃  🎃🎃</small>  </font></span> (talk) (To Do) 01:52, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

: Example limited notes: Gravestone Island Exit Buff: Overheal/Invulnerability/Crits. Cauldron Exit Buff: Full Heal/Invulnerability/Crits(?) <span style="font-family: Impact"><font color="70B04A">M I K A D O 282</font></span><span style="font-family: Arial "><font color="70B04A"> <small>🎃</small>🎃🎃🎃🎃<small>🎃  🎃🎃  🎃🎃</small>  </font></span> (talk) (To Do) 03:25, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

"Underworld-like areas" section?
As discussed before, it's a bit uncertain if Skull Island is an Underworld-like area, or if the entirety of Ghost Fort is an Underworld, thus making Skull Island an area in an Underworld. There is also the interior of the flying saucer in Probed, which acts the exact same way as most Underworlds, but I believe everyone will agree with me when I say it is not one (it's a flying saucer, not some Shadow Realm). Lastly, there is Monster Bash's Pit, which, again, acts just like an Underworld (and is even referred to as such by the game, though this could be just Valve reusing the "<code>playername</code> has escaped the underworld!" asset), but looks and feels much more like a hidden area of the castle than some other plane of existence (at least to me it does).

So my suggestion is: to create an "Underworld-like areas" section, with some text like

:Certain maps feature secondary play areas that act very similarly to Underworlds, with features such as draining the player's health while they're there and rewarding them for managing to leave alive, however, because their settings greatly differs from the usual, they are not considered as such

and then a list of maps with Underworld-like areas, descriptions of these areas, or both.

Revival of 'List of Underworlds' table rework project.

I saw that the Underworld page is fairly out-of-date, and that there has been a few projects with the aim of redoing the table that appear to have been abandoned.

Bloodwater
Purgatory

Consists of lava and poisonous air. If a player takes one of MONOCULUS' portals, their health is fully restored and they are transported to a small set of small islands with a few Magic Spells scattered around. Leaving through the white portal takes them back to the control point with a series of temporary buffs, including full Critical hits. Attacking MONOCULUS with these Crits stuns him for a few seconds.

Details for 'Purgatory' would go in this section.

Loot Island

Another location in Purgatory. Players can access it by touching the Bombinomicon that appears once MONOCULUS has been defeated; they must then make their way to the giant skull and get the Bombinomicon in there. Once they do, they are taken back to the control point with a series of buffs and a Rare Magic Spell. Similar to Eyeaduct, the air in Loot Island is harmless, the cease-fire would have ended, and players may attack their enemies on this location. Also, staying here for too long causes the island to explode, killing anyone on it.

Details for 'Loot Island' would go in this section.

I'm not great at formatting tables, so please let me know what you think of it, and what you would change about it; I hope we can replace the old table after so long!

I think a much simpler table would be better, scrapping all the explanations and just having some basic info similar to what was proposed on Template talk:Water locations table.

I see what you mean yeah, I like how the first of those two tables look given its smaller size would prevent it from being too cramped while still including an image of the underworld itself, though I feel it potentially limits how health/ammo kits in the underworld of varying sizes and amounts can be acknowledged to be in an Underworld to a more specific degree without those also having their own column (off the top of my head of things worth mentioning otherwise is health drain, environmental hazards, entry/exit buffs and spells).

I've tried reformatting it a bit based on the table(s) you linked to be more simplified, and reorganized it slightly.

(even though 'loot island' contains none of these lol)

Some things obviously still need improving; ideally the spell types would be easier to differentiate by including their particle effects, hazards could be provided in more detail, and additional features listed, but otherwise I feel this could potentially work? Should be more friendly for translation too, though it is just a mockup for the basic structure.

I think the pickups bit can be removed, just have a checkmark for spells, hazards, health drain, uber/crit on exit maybe, and an additional section for small notes (e.g. "Starts a 3v3" for Moldergrove, but nothing major).
BLU Wiki Cap.png | s | GrampaSwood Praise the Sun! (talk) (contribs) 22:14, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
I guess the pickups section would be somewhat unnecessary yeah. In my head listing buffs could be approached as two checks for 'Buffs on entrance' and 'Buffs on exit' (with exit greyed out if there isnt an exit), with what the specific buffs are listed in the notes section? I feel it is worth clarifying at the least what the buffs are and maybe if rare spells are present within the underworld or not (hazards I feel aren't as important to clarify on).
Kibblekip T | C 22:34, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
I would do something like:
Pictogram cross.png  Health drain
Pictogram tick.png  Hazards
Pictogram tick.png  Speed on entrance
Pictogram tick.png  Speed on exit
Pictogram tick.png  Critical hits on exit
Pictogram tick.png  ÜberCharge on exit.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── The problem is not every underworld heals you on when you enter, some apply a healing buff, some just set your health to max, some do(n't) give uber on entrance, etc. I feel there would be too many factors and inconsistencies to account for with checks, and that it would be better to clarify on the buffs in the extra notes section and just use a basic buff on entrance or exit check. Though if you feel it would still be fine and there isn't a need to be specific about the healing amount and such, we can work with that.
Kibblekip T | C 23:05, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

Yeah just Healing on entrance works. The main concern here is keeping the table up-to-date for all languages.
BLU Wiki Cap.png | s | GrampaSwood Praise the Sun! (talk) (contribs) 23:09, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
I hadn't considered that actually yeah, good point. Maybe it would be best to display it like:
On entrance:
Pictogram tick.png Healing
Pictogram cross.png Speed
Pictogram tick.png ÜberCharge
Pictogram cross.png Crits
And then repeat for on exit? I think those four cover everything that can occur other than receiving a spell, at least, though that can probably be added while still being translation friendly.

What if we went with a ridiculously short article, like Bumper Cars, and
 1. just had the table in the "List of maps with Underworld locations" section (minus the "Underworld(s)" column to facilitate translation),
 2. just had a list of maps with Underworlds, similar to the one in Magic spells,
 3. just had a "Gallery" section with pictures of the Underworlds, or
 4. had either 1 or 2 as well as 3?

Edit: I've updated the Sandbox page with ideas 2 and 3. - BrazilianNut (talk) 06:56, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
Lowkey if anything, seeing the pages for spells makes me think that could do with improving too lol, and the Bumper Cars page is an extremely small stub that could do with some expanding of its own.
I don't feel like it would make as much sense adapting the current format of the spells page for underworlds, as I feel there is more information and features that can be provided for individual underworlds than there is for spells, plus there being a lot more underworlds than spells in the first place.
Kibblekip T | C 07:35, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
To prevent flooding this talk channel with tables, I've made my own sandbox page here. At the moment the table is quite flawed as you'll see on the page itself, but I'm personally a fan of how this one looks.
EDIT: Nevermind, I learned how to use columns, so I guess the table is open to standard feedback now!
Kibblekip T | C 01:15, 18 August 2024 (UTC)
I added the 'AllowedEditors' template to the page I mentioned above; the table is essentially complete at this point, but as the note says, if anyone feels the table needs any minor adjustments or improvements (visible or just cleanup) do feel free. If there isn't any issues the table can probably be made into its own template page and replace the existing table at some point in the near future.
