The Robotic Boogaloo SFM was storyboarded by The Heartsman and Square, then animated by MrPopulus89. The SFM above was released in conjunction with the update and contains minor changes from its original upload, which was intended to act as a teaser.

[A crowbar pries open a crate.]
[A Scout Robot is seen.] [It then shows a Football Helmet in the crate.] [The Scout Robot picks the Football Helmet up, and rotates his head around.] [The Scout Robot turns, rotates his head back around, and begins to run.] [The Scout Robot runs past large piles of crates and a pile of hats consisting of Sober Stuntmans, Big Chiefs, Counterfeit Billycocks and more.] [The Scout Robot then approaches a circular mechanism in the center surrounded by piles of crates with four wires leading to it.] [The Scout Robot places the helmet on the pad, and covers his face.] [The mechanism starts scanning the helmet. A monitor on it shows a blue thumbs up and a tube is slammed over it.] [An edited version of ROBOTS! begins to play.] [The camera follows the tube, which leads to four long conveyor belts with machines on either side of each of them.] [The Gridiron Guardian is seen being created by mechanical arms.] [The Gridiron Guardian then falls off the conveyor belt and lands on a Heavy.] Heavy: "YES!" [nods] [A sign reading "Team Fortress 2" hits the Heavy in the forehead. The word "Robotic" then hits him in the face and knocks him down. The word "Boogaloo" then appears with an electric discharge sound.] |
Comparisons and differences
- Both videos have large piles of hats, however the older version's pile is mostly Ghastly Gibuses.
- More crates are seen throughout the older version.
- The newer version has four conveyors rather than one.
- The machine that scans the Football Helmet is more detailed in the newer version, and has a blue thumbs up instead of a green OK.
- In the older version, the Scout Robot uses a forked crowbar. In the newer version, it uses an unforked crowbar.
- In the newer version, the Football Helmet is seen immediately inside the crate. In the older version, it is not visible until the camera angle changes.
- The newer version has more lighting effects, hay detail, and more detail on the Football Helmet when it is being robotized.
- In the older version, the camera pans to the Heavy first, then The Gridiron Guardian falls onto his head. In the newer version, the helmet falls while the camera pans to the Heavy.
- In the older version, the "Team Fortress 2" logo hits the Heavy twice before having "Robotic Boogaloo" appear. In the newer version, it hits him once.
Trivia
- The update's name is a reference to the movie Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo. It gained notoriety for being poorly reviewed by critics and was not as successful at the box office compared to its predecessor from the year before. The term "boogaloo" has entered the pop-culture lexicon as a pejorative nickname for unnecessary and unwanted sequels.
- The name is also echoed in the Electric Badge-aloo, awarded to contributors to the update.
- On the Battlefield page, two of the Mecha-Engineers are named after famous cowboys:
- Dell "Snake-in-my-boot-disk" Computagher is named after Dell Conagher, and his nickname is a reference to Sheriff Woody from the movie Toy Story. Dell is also the name of an electronics company.
- The Syntax Kid is named after Harry Longabaugh, better known as "The Sundance Kid", an outlaw who thrived in the American Old West.
