The Classless Update was released on August 13, 2009, and marked the first non-class specific major update. The content focus of the update differed from previous updates; instead of introducing new weapons or achievements, the Classless Update added new hats, game modes and maps, while also delivering a large number of bug fixes and minor tweaks to existing gameplay.

The Classless Update page officially began on August 11, 2009, as announced on the TF2 Official Blog with the post "This one's ours now!". The update was released to all players on August 13.
- Day 1 (August 11): the Arena map Offblast, along with the addition of 18 new hats was announced.
- Day 2 (August 12): the King of the Hill map Viaduct, the first of its game type, as well as two new king of the hill converted maps, Sawmill and Nucleus, were announced.

- The Gentle Manne's Service Medal was the first item to be obtained through a hidden page. The only other item obtainable through this method was the Ghastly Gibus during the Hallowe'en Update in 2009. The item was later made available through an achievement.
- To date, Sawmill is the only map to receive the addition of 2 new map types, King of the Hill and Capture the Flag, in the same update.
