Run home to momma!
The Heavy

The Gloves of Running Urgently, commonly abbreviated as the G.R.U., are a craftable melee weapon for the Heavy. They appear as large, smooth, padded boxing gloves in team colors with flame decals and orange rings around the cuffs.

While the G.R.U. is the active weapon, the Heavy moves 30% faster - at 99.67% base movement speed, or at a rate of 299 Hammer units per second to be exact. While this effect is active, the Heavy suffers a health loss of 6 health per second, indicated by a team-colored skull particle appearing above him every time health is lost. Continual use of the G.R.U. will therefore result in the Heavy's death unless he is being continually healed. The G.R.U.'s damage is half that of the Fists.

As with the Fists and K.G.B., primary fire swings the left fist, secondary fire swings the right fist, and the critical hit animation is always a right-handed uppercut.

The G.R.U.'s self-inflicted damage is cumulative with respect to time. For example, if a player took out the G.R.U. for 0.5 seconds, switched to Minigun, and then switched back to the G.R.U., that player would take 6 damage after wielding the weapon for another 0.5 seconds. A player can minimize damage taken during travel by repeatedly jumping and only taking the G.R.U. out while touching the ground, as velocity is not lost by losing base move speed mid-air.

  • The G.R.U uses the Fists' sound effects rather than the K.G.B's when attacking with them.
  • The G.R.U can allow an aggressive Heavy to get the achievement Borsch Belt, though the K.G.B. isn't equipped.

Trivia

  • G.R.U. is an acronym for the Glavnoye Razvedyvatel'noye Upravleniye, the foreign military intelligence directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (formerly the Red Army General Staff of the Soviet Union).
  • The G.R.U. were featured in the closed beta, the attributes of which were leaked by testers. The beta G.R.U. did not have their own texture or taunt and instead used the K.G.B. model and Showdown taunt as placeholders. The first version of the G.R.U. increased the movement speed of the Heavy, but reduced the damage done by 50% and decreased max health by 100. These effects only took place while the weapon was active. A 'Beta 2' version existed, where the Heavy received less health from healing sources, rather than a loss of maximum health. A 'Beta 3' version replaced the max health loss with a 6 health drain per second while the weapon was active. The "Beta 3" version of the weapon is used in the game.
