A Mann vs. Machine mission is a pre-set wave of robots that occur on a Mann vs. Machine map. Added in the update of the same name they are classified by difficulty in five levels, namely Normal (the easiest), Intermediate, Advanced, Expert, and Nightmare (the hardest).

Each level additionally can be modified by its "Challenge mode" which comes in two types: Invasion, where there are many (usually 6 to 8) but shorter waves of robots and Endurance, where there are fewer but longer waves.

All missions are available in both Boot Camp and Mann Up modes; on the latter some of them can be part of a Tour of Duty, which requires a ticket to participate and, upon completion, may award exclusive items such as a Botkiller weapon or a cosmetic item.

August 15, 2012 Patch (Mann vs. Machine Update)

• [Undocumented] Added Doe's Drill, Disk Deletion, Data Demolition, Crash Course, Ctrl+Alt+Destruction, CPU Slaughter, Manouvers, Machine Massacre and Mech Mutilation missions.

August 23, 2012 Patch

• Added difficulty text "Normal" and "Advanced" to the MvM scoreboard when playing official Valve missions.
• Server browser will now show MvM mission name in the "map" column. (E.g. "mvm_mannworks_advanced")

September 4, 2012 Patch

• Fixed the party leader’s mission completions showing in the game lobby instead of your own.

October 9, 2012 Patch

• The first word in the title of a mission alliterates with the map the mission is played on.
