Ready to meet Sharpy?!
The Sniper on nicknamed weapons

The Name Tag allows a player to give an item of their choice a customized name. Picking this option will destroy the Name Tag. It is a tool, and thus consumed after a single use. If a stock item is renamed (40 characters or less), the player will "find" a new version of the stock item which will take up an item slot in the backpack like any other unlock item. The player can then choose to equip the item with either the custom or the original name through the character setup menu. However, if any item found through the drop system is renamed, it will overwrite the original name, and will not create a new version with the original name. Renaming an item does not affect its ability to be traded.

Renaming an item preserves the colour of its name-text (e.g. a renamed Vintage item's name will remain blue in colour). Any prefixes (e.g. "The " or "Vintage ") will be overwritten. To preserve the same style as vanilla items, "Title Case" should be used (i.e. capitalise the initial letter of each word). As of the October 6, 2010 Patch, named (or painted) items can be permanently reverted to their original state, using the button within the backpack normally marked "Restore". If you revert the name of a stock weapon, the weapon will remain in your inventory.

Name Tags can drop randomly, be found when unboxing a Series #1 Mann Co. Supply Crate, or purchased from the Mann Co. store.

Trading Scam

It is important to note that items can be renamed in a way that makes them appear to be rare items such as a "Community Backburner" or an "Unusual Soldier's Stash". Be aware that con artists may attempt to trade these renamed common items for multiple hats or other rare items. Named items have quotation marks around the name, and the name will not be not colored correctly for the item type (see Rarity for a list of colors that are used for actual rare items).

Known Bugs

The name tag is known to be bugged with the following item(s):

Pistol: Any renamed Pistol will not appear correctly if the Gunslinger is equipped. Instead, the Engineer will be holding the Pistol with his normal, gloved hand.
