Patterns and protocols have emerged from competitive play's unique format and setting, leading to a set of gameplay dynamics distinct from noncompetitive play.

Rollouts

A rollout is the process of getting from one's spawn point to the mid-point in a five-point map as quickly as possible. It is mainly used in competitive play, as winning the mid-fight determines which teams start with the advantage. The term is most often used to mean the sequence of rocket jumps and sticky jumps used by Demomen and Soldiers to get to the mid point as fast as possible; Scouts, Medics and other classes just run to the point as normal.
