what are we going for, why are there two archimedes variants but no archimedes the undying, im honestly asking. why do we allow some disconnected floating items like guano or the space hamster but not things like unknown monkeynaut
Talk:Mascot
It's a Mascot if the item type is Mascot.

i think its a bit absurd to exclude some of the halloween variants like polly putrid or lieutenant bites the dust
also other disambiguation pages like shirt list items even if they don't have a shirt item type because they fit the definition of shirt. the first item on the page is classified as apparel
The page is intended to document Mascots. Maybe another page to document every single mascot/buddy/etc. would be good. The difference here is that "Mascot" is an abritrary definition, while "shirt" is more than just an item type.

"It's a Mascot if the item type is Mascot." No, this is a disambiguation page, and if Halloween mascots are not listed here, it's because we overlooked them. The item type has nothing to do with it.
then should we reverse the edit?
Then we have 0 definition of what a Mascot actually is, so you can just go ahead and add any buddy cosmetic to it I guess

As I mentioned earlier, this is a disambiguation page, not a "list of items that have the item type 'Mascot'" page. Here's some actual useful feedback:
Assistants are internally referred to as "pets". This is what Pocket Buddy and Mascot refer to.
Here's what I'm thinking:
- Compile a list of assistants from the game files (
tf\scripts\items\items_game.txt
→"counts as assister is some kind of pet this update is going to be awesome"
) - Keep Pocket Buddy as it is, but add any other "pets" that visually fit the name (e.g. Beep Boy)
- Move Mascot to Pet and list everything else that is not already listed as a Pocket Buddy (e.g. Metal Slug)
- Create a record of this information somewhere so that we can maintain these pages in the future
We have a template (that is used on the Pyroland) page, for items with the "counts as assister is some king of pet this update is going to be awesome" string in the schema: Template:Assist items.
I'd be down for Tark's idea, with slight modification of page titles:
- If we're adding things to Pocket Buddy that aren't labelled "Pocket Buddy" as an item type, I suggest moving it to "Pocket items" as a disambiguation page, for all items that fit in a pocket. We can still have "items with the Pocket Buddy item type" as a header there.
- As Gabrielwoj mentioned, the items with the "counts as assister" item schema tag are all listed in the Assist items template -- we could work off that, still keep it around, but instead of calling the resulting article "Pet," we could call it something a tad broader, like Companion, since not all of these are technically living organisms suitable to be a "Pet", but are still meant to be either beside your character or around them.

This may be a mascot we should add to the page.
yea
We have disambiguation pages for things like Shirt, Hair, and Pocket Buddy. I feel like this could (and should, honestly) be another disambiguation page listing cosmetic items with the "Mascot" item type instead of an article explaining what a mascot is with a table containing mascot cosmetics. - BrazilianNut (talk) 02:55, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes, make this into a disambiguation page. This current page will be very small and it has never been done before, to explain every item on the wiki with its own page will take ages and will be unnecessary. Make sure to link Pocket Buddy in its own section. Like
Pocket Buddies
See Pocket Buddy
You have a point, but I think it's more fun this way. Besides, this can list anything with the Pyrovision assist stat, because a lot of new players will want an easier way of finding a good cosmetic in this category.
The Pyroland article and the Assist items category already cover that.
It might be more "fun", but doing it this way will cause inconsistency because no other page does this, except for the "List of [class] cosmetics". For stuff like this, it's better to have a disambiguation page. Sorry if this message got sent twice, stupid new system
