The Canteen is an action slot item used in the Mann vs. Machine game mode. The Canteen is received by completing your first Mann vs. Machine mission, and once filled at an Upgrade Station it is valid for up to three uses. It is possible to craft additional canteens using Scrap Metal, allowing the option to have multiple canteens that the player can hold with different buffs and strategically switch out between waves as the situation demands. The Power Up Canteen also doubles as a cosmetic item, showing up on your class model on the belt.

Medics have the option of giving their Medi Gun the "Canteen Specialist" upgrade, which applies the effects of any Canteen the Medic uses to the player they are healing. The effect is instant and only applies to the one teammate being healed upon usage; boosts of timed duration cannot be shared across multiple teammates like ÜberCharges can. The Canteen Specialist upgrade also reduces the cost of refills for the Medic by 10 per level (with a minimum of 5) and increases the duration of any timed effects by one second per level.

* The Buildings Upgrade Canteen has three bugs pertaining to carrying buildings and activating the canteen:
+
* Using a Building Upgrade Canteen while hauling a building results in the building retaining its current health and max health, but it still upgrades the building to level 3 if possible.
** Whilst carrying a Sentry Gun and activating the Buildings Upgrade Canteen, the Engineer will appear to have a Level 3 Sentry in front of him. When he places it, it will take damage, and be placed as a Level 1 Sentry Gun.
+
** If the building is a Sentry Gun, it retains its current ammo counts, but still receives a full supply of rockets if going from level 1 or 2 to level 3.
** Whilst carrying a Dispenser and activating the Buildings Upgrade Canteen, the Engineer will appear to have a Level 3 Dispenser in front of him. However, the Ammo screen will be blank. When he places it, it will take damage, however, it will remain at Level 3.
+
** If the building is a Dispenser, it retains its current metal amount.
** Whilst carrying a Teleporter and activating the Buildings Upgrade Canteen, rings of light from an active Teleporter will be left where he was standing. When he places it, it will take damage, and the rings of light will disappear. Like the Dispenser, it will remain at Level 3.
+
** If the building is a Teleporter and the other end of the Teleporter is already placed, then the Teleporter being carried has its max health be based on the placed Teleporter, but still retains the health it had when it was picked up. If the other end is not placed, it acts like the other buildings and keeps its current max health, however placing the other end does not update the max health to the correct amount and both ends are stuck with the max health the Teleporter had before being picked up.<!-- Someone who is better with words please explain this teleporter section better. Assume you have max building health then examples would be: you have a level 1 entrance and exit placed, pickup the entrance, and use a canteen; the entrance will have 600 hp when placed back down and a max hp of the normal 864, the exit will have 864 hp and 864 max hp. If you have a level 1 entrance with no exit placed, pick it up, and use a canteen; the entrance will have 600 hp when placed and a max of 600 hp. If you build the exit it will also have a max hp of 600. -->
 +
** Abnormal maximum health (such as a level 3 building with 150 max health) can only be removed by destroying the building or purchasing a building health upgrade.
 +
* The Ammo Refill Canteen suffers from several bugs.
 +
** This Canteen does not work on energy-based weapons, such as the Cow Mangler 5000 or the Righteous Bison.
 +
** Using an Ammo Refill Canteen erases all loaded shots from pre-load weapons such as the Beggar's Bazooka.
 +
* Activating 'MMMPH' with the Phlogistinator as soon the ÜberCharge Canteen is about to run out causes the invulnerability effects of the 'MMMPH' to end mid-taunt.
 +
* If a Sentry Gun has the Wrangler shield active when the owner uses an ÜberCharge canteen, the Sentry Gun does not gain the 90% damage resistance shield and instead keeps the normal Wrangler shield.
 +
* Crit canteens state they double the firing speed of the player's Sentry in-game, however because of rounding, the canteen actually triples a Sentry Gun's base firing speed. If the user has purchased a firing speed upgrade, or is using the Wrangler, then the firing speed is doubled as claimed.

* Sometimes, in Community servers, the Power up canteen does not appear.

Latest revision as of 23:21, 10 February 2024

Here at Mann Co., we take care of our mercs. After you’ve completed your first mission, you will get, free of charge, one Mann Co.-brand canteen. It's equippable in your action slot and filled to the damn brim with life-giving air. If air’s not your thing, these canteens can also be filled with a variety of power-ups at an Upgrade Station.

The Power Up Canteen is a default action item. It is an empty brownish-beige canister similar to a drinking canteen, worn on the belt or back and additionally adorned according to the power-up that it is "filled" with.

This item is used in Mann vs. Machine. When equipped and filled at an Upgrade Station, it is valid for up to three uses. Using the Canteen alerts the entire team via a sound cue as well as a message in the chat box. If it is not equipped, a notification is displayed, allowing the player to equip it by pressing J or cancel by pressing K. The notification continues to be displayed until it is equipped, as long as the player is on a Mann vs. Machine map.

The Power Up Canteen also doubles as a cosmetic item, showing up on the class model's belt.

This item was originally obtained by completing a Mann vs. Machine mission for the first time or via the crafting system.

Buff types

There are currently 5 buff types. Canteens can only be filled with the same buff, each with up to 3 uses. After being filled, the canteen changes its appearance, though they all glow.

Image Type Usage Cost
UberCharge Canteen.png Become Übercharged Supplies 5 seconds of ÜberCharge to user and a Wrangler shield that blocks 90% of damage to their Sentry Gun. 75 credits
Critical Hit Boost Canteen.png Become Crit Boosted Full critical hits for 5 seconds. Triples firing rate of user's Sentry Gun for 5 seconds. 100 credits
Ammo Clip Refill Canteen.png Refill Clips and Ammo Instant ammo and clip refill. Also refills Metal and Sapper; does not refill Sentry Gun ammo or Cloak. 25 credits
Return to Base Canteen.png Teleport to Spawn Immediately returns user to the respawn room and supplies a temporary speed boost. Cannot be shared by Medics. 10 credits
Buildings Upgrade Canteen.png Building Upgrade Upgrades user's buildings to Level 3 and fully repairs all existing buildings almost instantly. Only available to Engineers. 50 credits
