The Soul Gargoyle is a tool item. It is an eldritch idol of ancient evil that hungers for souls in the form of a gargoyle statue, with its right front claw on top of an object.
The Soul Gargoyle is a free Campaign access tool that counts souls collected by players when the soul collecting is activated during Scream Fortress events. It allows players to use the Halloween Transmute feature and count Halloween Contracts (Merasmissions) completed during the same events.
The Soul Gargoyle was first available during the Scream Fortress 2015 event and returned for the following Scream Fortress events. In recent events, new players who did not yet own a Soul Gargoyle have received one by launching Team Fortress 2 during an event, but after the annual Scream Fortress content patch has started the Halloween Contract Campaign, which can occur days after activation of soul collecting.
This backpack item collects souls that represent kills and other points the player scores. All year long on Halloween maps, these collected souls appear as spooky white traces flying to the player from the bodies of slain victims, captured points, pushed carts, or other sources. During Halloween events only, the same soul collecting animations appear on all maps, and all souls collected in all games during the event are added to the Soul Gargoyle's Souls Collected count.
In Scream Fortress 2015 and 2016, this item granted access to Merasmissions, a Halloween Contracts set that was replaced in Scream Fortress 2017 by Halloween Contracts that operate under the ConTracker. Halloween Contracts completed during the Contract Campaign increase the Merasmissions Completed count.
Translucent green pickup versions (sometimes referred to as Ghost Gargoyles) randomly spawn on most Halloween maps (replacing Halloween Gift pickups, spawning in the same locations, if the map originally had them). They are announced by Merasmus for individual players, who can then find and pick up their own Soul Gargoyle, only visible to them. Picking up a Soul Gargoyle produces a swarm of animations and during Halloween scores the player 10 additional souls all at once. Despite the Soul Gargoyles only being visible to the individual, the animations of a player picking one up are not. These souls also contribute to the Halloween contracts.

Soul collection
While the Soul Gargoyles are activated by Valve, as a player performs certain actions in the game, souls are collected by their Soul Gargoyle. For the most part, the number of souls collected for each action correspond to those seen scored against Contract Primary Objectives, including:
- 1 soul is collected for each kill or assist, including while waiting for players to join and during Humiliation.
- 1 soul is collected by each member of the team that captures a Point.
- 4 additional souls are collected by each team member that actually Capture the Point.
- 1 soul is collected for pushing the Cart through a given distance (also for the Doomsday/Carnival of Carnage platform)
- 10 souls are collected when picking up a Ghost Gargoyle.
- 25 souls are collected when defeating a Halloween boss.[1]
Ranks
During Halloween events only, the collected souls are counted by the backpack item, similar to Strange Weapons; thus, the Soul Gargoyle in the backpack has a range of ranks that increase as the player collects souls.
Rank | Souls Collected | Name |
---|---|---|
0 | 0 | Sad |
1 | 666 | Silly |
2 | 1337 | Sneering |
3 | 2000 | Happy |
4 | 4000 | Pleased |

Leveling Up
The backpack model of the Soul Gargoyle improves as its rank increases through the first 4 ranks; the Soul Gargoyle starts at Stone quality and levels up with the following ranks:
Level 1 (0 Souls) |
The Stone Sad Soul Gargoyle holds a skullcap. | |
Level 2 (666 Souls) |
The Bronze Silly Soul Gargoyle holds a twelve-sided die. The sides consist of a Swan emblem, the nine class emblems, a Saxton Hale emblem, and a cigarette emblem (signifying the Administrator). | |
Level 3 (1337 Souls) |
The Silver Sneering Soul Gargoyle holds the talking pumpkin from the Gargoyles & Gravel comic. | |
Level 4 (2000 Souls) |
The Australium Happy Soul Gargoyle holds a pile of "Gargoyles and Gravel" books, with the topmost one being the Gravel Master's Handbook. | |
Note | After the 4th level, only the name of the item changes; the icon remains the same. |
Halloween Transmuting
The Halloween Transmute feature allows players to trade in three qualifying items in exchange for an untradable, uncraftable cosmetic item from previous Scream Fortress events.
Every ten transmutes results in the player receiving an additional bonus item, guaranteed to be of Haunted quality.
