The Sandvich (in full, the Sandvich Edible Device) is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Heavy. It consists of two triangular slices of bread containing lettuce, tomatoes, Swiss cheese and an indeterminate meat referred to as both ham and bologna by The Heavy. Topping it is an olive through a toothpick.
The Sandvich can be consumed by pressing the correct bound keys for either primary fire or taunting. Using the taunt button will allow the player to bypass the .67 second delay when switching weapons. When eaten, it will replenish 100% health (300 HP) over a four second duration. During this time, the player will be forced into third person as the Heavy becomes completely immobile and emits loud munching noises. The healing given by the Sandvich does not extinguish fire, but will extinguish fire when you use alt-fire and pick up the Sandvich. As of a recent update, Heavies are only allowed to constantly eat a Sandvich without a cooldown if they have full health. If any damage was sustained before eating the Sandvich, the cooldown timer will take effect. As eating the Sandvich is considered a taunt, it cannot be consumed whilst underwater. When eaten, critical Sandviches deliver no additional benefits.
A generous Heavy can use the alternate fire to drop the Sandvich ahead of him for teammates to pick up, healing the collector 50% of his maximum health. The dropped Sandvich will only last a total of 30 seconds.
The recharge time for the Sandvich is about 30 seconds, unless one is collected from a Resupply cabinet or a Medikit while at full health. Should the Heavy be killed whilst holding the Sandvich, it will be dropped as a collectible for 50 health (75 for a Scout).

Trivia
- The Sandvich was first portrayed to the playing community in the Meet the Scout video, weeks before it was released as an in-game item.
- Despite the Sandvich being made of bread, meat, cheese, and vegetables, it can somehow be crafted into scrap metal.
- The Sandvich user guide says that the bread and grains group heals 20 health, the vegetable group heals 40 health, the cheese and dairy group heals 20 health, the meat and poultry group heals 20 health, and the other bread and grains group heals 20 health. This sums to only 120 health, the amount of health that the Sandvich originally replenished. The ability of the Sandvich to heal 300 points of health was added in a later update.
- The user guide for the Sandvich contains a typo. The word "Health" relating to the cheese and dairy group is misspelled. This is corrected in the actual poster available through the Valve Store.
- It is possible to drop the Sandvich while stunned by the Sandman.
- The Sandvich has an ammo count, even during the period when it had a cooldown bar, in order for it to be thrown as a pickup.
- When eating the Sandvich, no bite marks will appear visible for the player, yet other players will see a bite mark form. On occasion, the Sandvich will glitch and show a first person view of a bitten Sandvich.
- As of October 8, 2010, you can now use your taunt key and eat your Sandvich without a cooldown, rather than using your primary fire key, which still has a cooldown.
- This has been patched on October 27, 2010.
- Sandviches dropped upon death will heal any class by 50 health instead of 50% health from voluntarily dropped sandviches; Scouts will gain 75 health from sandviches dropped in this manner.
