De WAR! Update was een klasse update voor de Demoman en de Soldier. De update was de tweede multi-klasse patch, en het zesde grote content pakket gereleased. De update was op December 9, 2009 voor het eerst aangekondigd, en was gereleased in de 17 december 2009-patch.
The WAR! Update verschilde van vorige updates door twee competities te bevatten, die buiten en binnen het spel waren. De eerste was aangekondigd bij de start van de update; een kill-tracker kwam tevoorschijn op de HUD van iedereen die Demoman of Soldier speelde, waarvan de teller omhoog ging als iemand als Soldier een vijandelijke Demoman of iemand als Demoman een vijandelijke Soldier vermoord had. De persoonlijke totalen waren samen toegevoegd tot een massa-totaal, En met elke dag van de update werd er aangekondigd welk team (de Soldiers of Demomen) de meeste kills hadden tegen de andere partij. De Soldier won met 6,406,065 kills in totaal tegen de Demoman's 6,372,979, waardoor de soldier een nieuw wapen verdiende, namelijk de Gunboats.
The second competition was the Propaganda Contest. Users were encouraged to design propaganda posters for the side of their choice, supporting either the BLU Soldier or RED Demoman. The posters were then submitted to Valve to be judged through the Propaganda Contest website. The three leading prizes were later revealed to be J.Axer's Dapper Topper, Amber's Rad As All Hell Hat, and Uncle Sam (for first, second, and third place respectively).

Announcements
The WAR! Update page officially began on December 10th, 2009 as announced on the TF2 Official Blog post "The War Update". The update was released on December 17th.
- Day 1: The WAR! Update began to track kills.
- Day 2: The Propaganda Contest was announced.
- Day 3: Crafting was announced.
- Day 4: The Eyelander and Chargin' Targe were announced.
- Day 5: The Direct Hit was announced.
- Day 6: The Equalizer, Buff Banner, and Scottish Resistance were all announced. The titles and icons for the Demoman achievements and Soldier achievements were also revealed.
- Day 7: The Soldier was announced to be the winner of the kill contest, receiving the Gunboats as a prize. The Control Point map Gorge and Capture the Flag map Double Cross were also announced. The achievements, which were teased the previous day, had their descriptions revealed.

Pre-announcement references
New Administrator voice files
Teasing of the WAR! Update began with the 7 december 2009-patch when new Administrator voice files were added to the game – which were randomly switched out with the normal voice files during gameplay if a Demoman and Soldier were being played by opposing teams. She would voice her disappointment and hint at the upcoming conflict by stating that her trust had been "betrayed" and that "Friendship will not be tolerated".

The first official hint came on December 9th 2009 with the blog post "Attention Employees...". It contained a single sentence of "Friendship ends in one day." and a link to a comic where Miss Pauling revealed to the Administrator that the BLU Soldier and RED Demoman had become friends. Fearing that the two would eventually find out that they both work for the same person, the Administrator told Miss Pauling to contact Saxton Hale and order some new custom weapons as she was going to make the friends compete with each other.
This comic continued over the next few days alongside the update itself. It continued on to show Saxton Hale being contacted and shipping out the new weapons, and the Demoman and Soldier being tricked into competing with each other.

- In reference to this event, several unused Domination lines have been added to the Soldier and Demoman referencing their former friendship. For example, the Soldier may say "You were good, son, real good" to a dominated Demoman, and the Demoman may slur "I love you, man" after dominating a Soldier.
- All small text in the newspaper articles is written in Lorem Ipsum or "dummy text" which is used by the printing industries, and popularized in the 1960s, to make sure that the reader isn't distracted by the written text.
