Unlocked Cosmetic Crates
Unlocked Cosmetic Crates are tool items obtainable through the Mann Co. Store. They are shown as open-style wooden shipping crates. Unlocked Cosmetic Crates can be opened by simply pressing Mouse 2 on the crate then Mouse 1 while over the "Open" button. Anything unboxed while the crate is untradable will become tradable on the date the crate is supposed to become tradable.
When a crate is opened, a five second timer ticks down, alongside a sound effect of wrapping paper being torn and cut. Once opened to the tune of a cheering crowd, identical to when an achievement is unlocked, the player will receive one among all hats for the specific class selected. After which, the crate is removed from the player's inventory and replaced with the uncrated hat.
Though the notion and concept of a crate suggests that the contents should be predetermined, Robin Walker has confirmed the mechanics are such that item drop is determined at the point of opening the crate; moreover, hats are not mapped to crates and thus there is no distinction to be made between two crates of identical class.

This crate is scouts variation of the Unlocked Cosmetic Crate. This crate will drop one class specific (Scout) hat upon being opened. To open this crate simply Mouse 2 while over the crate the Mouse 1 open in the drop down menu. After opening you will see a five(5)-second timer and a sound effect of paper being ripped and cut apart. Identical to the sound of Gift wrap being opened. When the timer counts down to zero(0) the crate will be removed from your inventory and replaced by the unboxed hat that may or may not be Strange or Unusual.
