The Sandvich, known in full as the Sandvich Edible Device, is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Heavy. It is half of a sandwich, consisting of two triangular slices of bread containing lettuce, tomatoes, Swiss cheese and an indeterminate meat referred to as both ham and bologna by the Heavy. Topping it is a green stuffed olive pinned to the Sandvich by a toothpick.
The Sandvich can be consumed by pressing the correct bound keys for either primary fire or taunting. When eaten, it will replenish 100% health, 300 HP, over a four second duration. During this time, the player will be forced into the third-person view as the Heavy stops and makes a loud munching noise whilst eating. Heavies are allowed to constantly eat a Sandvich without a cooldown if they have full health. As eating the Sandvich is considered a taunt, it cannot be consumed whilst underwater. When eaten, critical Sandviches deliver no additional benefits.
Players can use the alternate fire to drop the Sandvich onto the floor to act as a medium-sized health kit. It can then be picked up by teammates or enemy players, healing the collector 50% of their maximum health. The dropped Sandvich will only last a total of 30 seconds, or until another Sandvich is dropped by the same Heavy. Only a dropped Sandvich will extinguish fire.
The recharge time for the Sandvich is about 30 seconds, unless one is collected from a Resupply cabinet or a Medkit while at full health. The timer begins as soon as the item is consumed or dropped. Should the Heavy be killed whilst holding the Sandvich, it will be dropped as a collectible for 50 health, or 75 for a Scout.
The Sandvich is automatically given to any player who obtains 10 Heavy achievements.

- While at full health, picking up dropped medkits from slain players, either in Medieval Mode or from those killed by the Candy Cane, will not restore the Sandvich.
Trivia
- S.E.D, the acronym of "Sandvich Edible Device", is also the acronym for the Template:W, the Communist governing party of East Germany from October 1949 to March 1990.
- The Sandvich was first introduced to the community in Meet the Scout, months before it was released as an in-game item.
- In Meet the Scout, the Heavy's Sandvich-eating is interrupted by an enemy Scout, who kills the Heavy with his Bat before eating the Sandvich over his corpse. The fact that when a Scout eats the Sandvich of an enemy Heavy he has killed, he recovers more health than any other class could be taken as a nod to the item's original inspiration.
- If players enable high quality world models by typing
mp_usehwmmodels 1
in the console, the Sandvich model, similiar to Meet the Sandvich, will appear to have a bite taken out of it. - The user guide for the Sandvich contains a typo. The word "Health" relating to the cheese and dairy group is misspelled. This is corrected in the actual poster available through the Valve Store.
- The Sandvich received its own bio with the release of the Meet the Sandvich video, despite not being a playable class.
- Using the taunt button will allow the player to bypass the 0.67 second delay when switching weapons.
