Gelegenheitsspiel ist ein offizieller Spielmodus welcher für Team Fortress 2 veröffentlicht wurde. Dieser Modus ersetzt das Schnelles Spiel nach dem Meet Your Match Update.
Im Gelegenheitsspiel werden Sie vorzugsweise zu einem Spiel geschickt, welches sich noch in der Aufbauphase befindet und zu einem Server, welches sich in Ihrer nähe befindet. Sie werden in einem Spiel geschickt, welches beide Kriterien erfüllt. Es kann jedoch passieren, dass das Spiel diese Kriterien nicht erfüllen kann (z.B. kann es im Ausland gehostet werden und/oder bereits im Gange sein wenn keine anderen Server verfügbar sind). Zusätzlich können Sie im Gelegenheitsmodus filtern, auf welchen Karten Sie spielen möchten. Die Unterteilung erfolgt zunächst in "Kernspielmodi" und "Alternativmodi". In Kernspielmodi kann dann nach Angirff/Verteidigung, Flagge erobern, Kontrollpunkte (z.B. 5 CP), King of the Hill und Frachtbeförderung filtern. In den Alternativmodis kann man nach Frachtrennen, Sonstigen (Spiele, welche in einer eigenen Kategorie passen), Mannpower und PASS-Zeit filtern. Während Feiertagen können zusätzliche Kategorien hinzugefügt werden, wie z.B. ausgewählte Halloween-Karten für die Dauer von Halloween-Events. In jeder dieser Unterkategorien können die Karten einzeln weiter herausgefiltert werden.
Im Gelegenheitsmodus können Sie eine Gruppe gründen oder ihr beitreten. In dieser temporären Gruppe, welche aus maximal 6 Spielern bestehen kann, sind Sie dann Mitglied. Diese Gruppe verbindet sich gleichzeitig zu Servern und führt dazu, dass alle Spieler im selben Team spielen, sobald sie erfolgreich mit einem Server verbunden sind. Nachdem das Spiel vorbei ist, bleibt das Team zusammen. Die Gruppe wird erst aufgelöst, wenn alle das Spiel verlassen haben. Bisher konnte man Spielen, an denen Freunde beteiligt waren beitreten, indem man in deren Steam-Profil auf "Spiel beitreten" drückte. Dies ist im Gelegenheitsspiel jedoch nicht mehr möglich, da der Modus "Ad-hoc-Verbindungen" deaktiviert, aber es ist immer noch in Community-Server möglich.
Im Gelegenheitsspiel steigen sie optisch auf indem Sie Erfahrungspunkte aus Siegen und im Spiel erzielten Punkten jeglicher Art erhalten. Es gibt 150 Stufen, wobei jede Stufe mehr Erfahrung erfordert als die vorherige. Mit jedem Lebel ändert sich das Bild auf ihrer "Münze", welche sich oben links im Hauptmenü befindet. Die Levels sind zunächst in sechs Stufen unterteilt: Zivilist, Freiberufler, Söldner, Kommando, Attentäter und Elite, wobei Zivilist die niedrigste und Elite die höchste Stufe ist. Jeder dieser Stufen besteht aus 25 Rängen. Mit jeder Stufe ändert sich auch die Farbe Ihrer Münze, die von Hellblau bis zu einem satten Rot reicht. Innerhalb jeder der Stufen gibt es fünf weitere Unterstufen, die aus fünf Münztypen bestehen. In der ersten der Unterstufen erhalten Sie eine einfache Münze. Wenn Sie die fünf einzelnen Stufen innerhalb dieser Stufe aufsteigen, wird Ihrer Münze ein Stern nach dem anderen (beginnend mit einem) hinzugefügt. Für alle fünf Stufen die Sie erreichen, erhalten Sie mehr Zubehör für Ihre Münze, aber die Anzahl der Sterne wird auf eins zurückgesetzt. Nach 25 Stufen wird dieses Zubehörsystem zurückgesetzt, jedoch erhält die Münze dann eine andere Farbe.
Zusätzlich zu den Stufen gibt es auch Ränge. Nachdem Sie Stufe 150 überschritten haben, werden Sie auf Stufe 1 zurückgesetzt, während sich Ihre Stufe um 1 erhöht und Ihr Abzeichen sein Aussehen entsprechend ändert. Es gibt insgesamt 8 Stufen, wobei der höchste Rang 150, Stufe 8, ist.
Die Stufe im Gelegenheitsspiel ist eine kosmetische Funktion welche Anzeigt, wie viel und wie gut Sie mit anderen gespielt haben. Stufen können nie verloren gehen und haben keinen Einfluss auf das Spielermatching. Die Level des Gelegenheitsspiels unterscheiden sich von den Rängen des Wettkampf-Modus'; die Ränge des Wettkampf-Modus' beeinflussen das Spielermatching und können verloren werden.[1]

21. Oktober 2016 Patch (Scream Fortress 2016)
- Join Halloween matches by selecting the "Halloween" category in Casual
- Added "Load Saved Settings" and "Save Current Settings" buttons to the Casual mode Map Selection menu.
- Search criteria is now manually saved to give players more control over the default settings when the game is launched.
- XP earned in Casual matches has been adjusted to reward players more for their personal contribution to the match.
- XP per point has returned to 6.5 XP per point.
- XP earned for match completion and objective completion now scales based on your score relative to total amount of points scored by everyone in the match.
- Increased the matchmaker's priority of matches with imbalanced teams.
- This should reduce the occurrence of extended imbalanced matches when multiple players leave.
- Fixed Casual search criteria being saved automatically while connecting to a server.

21. Dezember 2016 Patch (Smissmas 2016)
- Matchmaking Improvements.
- At the end of a Casual match, players are automatically formed into a new match with the same players and teams.
- Players get to vote on which map the new match will take place on.
- There are 3 maps to vote on, chosen based on the maps everyone in the match had selected when they began searching for a match. The current map is always the first option.

20. Oktober 2017 Patch #1 (Jungle Inferno Update)
- Redesigned the matchmaking screens to be lightweight overlays that can be summoned and dismissed from anywhere within the game.
- Moved the Casual badge panel to the main menu.
- Levels now go beyond 150. All players now have a Tier in addition to their Level. All players start at Tier 1. When your Level goes past 150 your Level resets to 1, your Tier goes up by 1, and your Casual badge will change its appearance to reflect your new status.
- Players who had reached level 150 will have any experience beyond 45500 (the amount required to hit 150) put into an overflow pool. While playing Casual matches, any XP you earn will be matched and deducted from your overflow pool until it runs out.
- The "Vote for the next map!" dialog can now be minimized to view the top scoring players.

Bugs
- Occasionally, the "Vote For Next Map" option may not allow players to vote, or so it may appear to a player joining just after the vote closed.

- If a player gets disconnected in the middle of a match and attempts to rejoin, the player may be kicked for an "ad-hoc connection", despite it being through the matchmaking system, thus preventing the player from joining.
