Heyo. In regards to this, please keep in mind that all edits are shown under the Recent changes and posted in our IRC channel in real time. As of right now, you've been cluttering both the Recent changes and IRC with unnecessary edits, which make monitoring difficult for us and leaves out focus on more important edits. By using the Show preview feature, you'll be able to check your edits prior to saving them and should be used as often as possible to minimize redundant edits. If you need help on wiki formatting, then please check out our Help section. Thanks! User Wookipan Golden Strawberry.png Wookipan (talk | contribs) 18:03, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

Concerning your map strategy page edits

Hello! I've noticed that recently, you've added a lot of information to the "General Strategy" sections of the Community Badwater Basin strategy, Community Gold Rush strategy, and Community Mercenary Park strategy articles. Those sections have been empty, or almost empty, for a long time, so the effort is appreciated, especially with the level of detail you've been going to for each individual section of the maps.

However, instead of ordering each of the points individually, with subsections for the attacking and defending teams, it would be preferable if you could instead list the offense and defense teams as their own sections, with subsections for each point. I've already re-ordered the articles linked above myself, so you don't need to worry about going back to them to change the order, but keep it in mind if you take it upon yourself to write another page for another map.

In addition, and I'm not trying to be mean by saying this, the grammar could use a little bit of improvement. You seem to be using "they're" instead of "their" a lot (e.g, "the Blu team should be pushing out of they're spawn" instead of "the BLU team should be pushing out of their spawn"). Also, keep in mind that the RED and BLU team names are always fully capitalized, instead of just the first letter. Once you are done editing, you should re-read what you've written and correct any errors you've found before you finalize the edit. The "Preview Changes" button can help with this.

Other than those two things, keep up the good work! Editing articles in huge chunks like that can be difficult and time-consuming, so I'm glad to see you're taking the initiative to do it yourself. It's greatly appreciated. HitlineMiamo (talk) 04:04, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

Helpful overviews

Hi there,

Please don't upload files with the "2" next to it, but rather just call it "[Map] overview with lines" (Unless you need 2 different images). Please also go see this and this edit, these things should be changed on every map page so far and in the future. Mainly being removing the large amount of whitespace and replacing it with {{clr}}, using the correct forms of you're/your and their/they're/there, as well as replacing the "Helpful overview" with "[[#Helpful overview|Helpful overview]]" to create a link that leads to the section.
GrampaSwood (talk) 18:40, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

Okay, thanks for notifying me, I didn't know about the {{clr}} option so I just spammed the enter botton until the strategy section got moved far enough below the image, but thanks for the advice :D Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 18:47, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
'tis all good, that's why I contacted you :) I think the overview section can be turned into a template as well, but I'll have to see about that.
GrampaSwood (talk) 19:01, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
Uh...I've been wondering about this but whats a template? I didn't get the chance to ask this anyone so mind if i ask you.The preceding unsigned comment was added by Lolimsogreat21 (talk) • (contribs) 21:10 CEST 11 April 2021
It's basically a page that contains stuff that's often repeated on pages. The infobox you see on something like Scattergun is a template, for example.
Also I've noticed that you still make the same mistake of using "your" instead of "you're" and not linking the "Helpful overview" bit, please start doing this as the first is basic grammar that's not really excusable to get wrong and the second is just a helpful link. Also don't forget to sign your comments using ~~~~.

Alright, thanks for warning me once again. Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 13:41, 12 April 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21

There are class match-up pages for strategy, if that's what you're looking for.

For instance, Scout match-ups. Would that make things easier for the huge project that I think you're undertaking? - InShane (talk) 19:59, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
Ay,thanks!
The Lolimsogreat21 thanking InShane

And yes, this will certainly help in anti-class strategy edits, thank you :D Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 20:05, 24 April 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21

Great! Looking through, try to keep things to the point. The article wants to retain the reader, given how there are video guides for practically everything in TF2 now. Your information is 99% correct, but carries on a bit and contains a few grammatical errors. In the past, I drafted my huge revisions in Microsoft Word or a dummy user page. - InShane (talk) 20:15, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

I found a page that might interest you. Let's take care not to re-invent the wheel.

https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Class_Counters_(Competitive)

As I shuffled through the match-up pages and looked for proper sources, I remembered this page exists. Looking at the latest changes, it was another editor's major project last September. Instead of starting the rest of your versions from scratch, maybe this is the point you're looking for? This is specifically anti-class, rather than class match-ups, and hits up the in-depth competitive counters you're alluding to.

Side note: I don't want to put all 9 tables in a single sandbox. It's tedious to comb through between edits, as I do save every 3 entries or so. Back when we were less stable, it was entirely possible to lose a large editing session. -- InShane (talk) 02:29, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

Hmmm, Im not quit sure what is the point your trying to make with the stating that class counters exist? Are you saying that class-matchups are useless, anti-class strategues are useless, or just that my updates to anti-class strategies are useless.
Anyway, I can see that you've updated the class matchups very, very quickly, like you did it in just two days. I was expecting that this project would drag on for some more time, a week or two atleast. But you did it very fast, good work :D. So, im only planning to take a bit more detailed look at your updates and add some more information which could be useful, not to much information though. And after i've done that....well I guess that we can say that this project is finished, suprisingy quick.
And sorry for putting all the tables in one place, thought that it would be a bit easier to read.

Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 21:08, 17 May 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21

It's an observation that the class counters page is closest to how you are approaching each class based on who does well, neutrally, and poorly against them. And uh, yeeees, I entered a trance and updated all the anti-classes to your format last weekend. I lurked through casual and comp forums from up to 5 years back to get a feel of the meta so the entries no longer said, "dodge him and shoot him." -- InShane (talk) 18:47, 18 May 2021 (UTC)

Grammar on strategy pages

You seem to make the same mistakes in a lot of edits. Such as "duo" instead of "due" or "quit" instead of "quite". I'm not sure if you know anyone that's a native English speaker, but it might be best if you have a person spell/grammar check your edits before posting them. Having to monitor every edit you make and then correct these same few mistakes every time will get very tiring.
GrampaSwood (talk) 20:36, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

Allright, thank you for warning me. I will try and make sure to not do this kinds of mistakes anymore. Sorry for wasting your time.

Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 20:59, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21

I am gently asking you to plan edits in a sandbox again. I shouldn't have to fix the spelling of words such as "medic" and "off" while trying to blend in your additions. The pages want to look good, not just be informative. That's why I spend my time here making them look decent. -- InShane (talk) 21:32, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

Didn't really think the Sandbox was necessary anymore. I just wanted to add some additions, not rework the entire page.

Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 22:03, 19 June 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21

Every major Internet browser has a built-in spell checker for multiple languages. For grammar, read through your entries out loud to force yourself to slow down and understand how awkward some sentences sound. I do this for my job, all written communications, and my wiki work. -- InShane (talk) 00:53, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

Regarding "useful weapons."

Some of your additions are good, but others are akin to throwing darts and hoping they hit the target. Let us define "useful weapons" as weapons you would take to actually counterpick the enemy class. This means recommending the Vaccinator only against Scout and Sniper, the pick classes, and not recommending a weapon with a trait that is only coincidentally useful, such as the Gas Passer against the Spy, who the Pyro already terrorizes. -- InShane (talk) 22:51, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

Alright then

Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 13:45, 21 June 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21

Where are you getting some of these examples from? Machina bodyshot followed by a single SMG bullet? Read the style guide for what makes decent strategy. -- InShane (talk) 11:12, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
In the Style guide it says that a good strategy can differ from player to player. But ok...now that I think about it, this particular tip is quit dumb and not very useful. Although the Machina is banned in competitive for this very reason.

Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 11:53, 27 June 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21

The Machina is banned because the extra damage is overwhelming in coordinated play, particularly concerning the piercing shot against the Medic. Additionally, highly skilled players always scope. -- InShane (talk) 14:30, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

I'm still not sure whether I like writing in the second person or the thrid

I can be corrected if this has changed, but second person is tolerated on the Community Strategy pages; but I don't have any problem with writing them in third person. Mixing second and third person can be a problem though, so, if the ComStrat is all in second, I add to it in second. However when Strategy is in the main article, it should be all in third person. M I K A D O 282 ⊙⊙⊙⊙⊙ ⊙⊙ ⊙⊙ (talk) (Help Wanted!) 03:52, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

Yes, the second person is tolerated in the strategy pages. I was just experimenting how would it sound better. For now, I would like to split the map strategy pages in to two persons. The general strategy would be in the third, and the class specific's would be more personal and focused on the second person. How does that sound?

Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 08:34, 13 July 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21

I haven't looked yet. It will have to do with style. I will try to take a look at your sandbox version (remind me/add me if you want).

Using the Map overview template publicly while in experimental state

Hi,

Apologies if this comes off a bit harsh, but I deliberately said that, and I quote, "It is currently in my user space, and I've yet to do some more testing and improve the documentation before I'd consider it fully ready for public usage..." - yet you completely disregarded that and started to add it into mainspace articles, which you already know are public and live. You should also never link to user content in mainspace articles; user content is reserved to user space only. I'm honestly surprised none of the other staff had stopped you.

Point is: it was not ready for public use and is still in an experimental state. Say, if I made some changes to it while testing and something went wrong, then that error would appear on all pages where the template is present - even if only for a brief moment - this should be avoided, and once again the primary reason why all testing need to be done in sandboxes. I can understand you're eager to update the overviews after waiting a little longer than anticipated, but sometimes you just need to slow down and wait.

Unfortunately, I'll have to ask that you roll back the changes, for now. You can add them back once the template is fully ready. You'll know when this is once I create it in the mainspace. User Wookipan Golden Strawberry.png Wookipan (talk | contribs) 21:15, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

Oh... I'm terribly sorry for doing that. For some reason, my brain just didn't register the part about the template still being in testing and well.... I went straight to editing. I didn't mean to cause any commotion or problems, I just wanted to get the overviews done as soon as possible and be satisfied with it. Unfortunately, it seems that haste really does make waste, and now I have to correct myself. Oh well, thank you at least for warning me about the problems I caused :C.

Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 23:10, 13 July 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21

All good. Thanks for your understanding. User Wookipan Golden Strawberry.png Wookipan (talk | contribs) 21:25, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

Overview mark up concerns.

I apologize for being brief and commenting without deep involvement, but I have comments from observations.

1) Annotated map overviews do have some potential usefulness.

2) Any system for map overview annotation needs to be easy, needing really no more skill than wiki text editing; because the overview needs to follow and changes in locations, which are generally subject to change, correction, and improvement. Consider what happens when the person who made the images is no longer active to maintain them.

3) "Helpful overview" is not an ideal heading; why "Helpful strategy" or "Helpful Trivia"? At best, the heading would just be "Overview" (if any heading is needed at all).

4) If annotated map overviews are always are set at the bottom of Locations, and the image has something of a title, then it really doesn't even need a heading. (I also see potential for snippets, embedded within Locations text.)

5) There is no need at all for the hatnote: "If you're having trouble with finding the locations listed here, ...", If this system is broadly adopted and well maintained, then it will be apparent when one reads the locations that they are marked on the overview following the text. (And if snippets are embedded in text, headings can be even less helpful).

6) (For the template) Especially, for symmetric maps without distinguishable features (like Lazarus), or for marking locations of identical features (e.g., ghost spawns, HHH spawns) could one number/letter be repeatedly placed (forgive the comment if it can be done already)?

M I K A D O 282 ⊙⊙⊙⊙⊙ ⊙⊙ ⊙⊙ (talk | contribs) (Help Wanted!) 13:17, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

Oh, well hello again. I really didn't expect anyone else commenting on this topic, but I'm glad that people want to add their two cents. So, let me answer you questions:
1) Very good observation, if I may say. Everyone should agree that its simply impossible to visualize to someone, who never played that specific map in their life, the exact position of every map's key location in only words. Hence the reason for Helpful overviews.
2) Unfortunately, this is probably as easy as it gets. The old Helpful overviews required you to do "off-site" work in order to draw them. These new ones can be made on the wiki itself, so there have clearly been improvements.
3) Reason why I call them "Helpful overviews" is in order to distinguish them from the usual overviews. Every map has this Map infobox, which contains a simple, unedited overview of that map. Helpful overviews take these unedited overviews, and add markers/circles on them in order to mark a certain location.
4) I can maybe agree with you in this one. Sure, perhaps there really doesn't need to be a big heading above the image which already has its own title. But then again, some maps have very long lists of locations, and scrolling through these lists just to get to the Helpful overviews at the bottom, can be tedious. Having a heading adds a shortcut to the table of contents, eliminating this problem.
5) I can agree, these hat-notes have to go. I just added them in the beginning when people still weren't used to the Helpful overviews, and probably weren't even aware of their existence.
Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 15:34, 14 July 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
As for unexpected participants on this topic: the proposal is certainly one that has broad impact on the wiki; and as it has progressed, it seems to me for that reason to be a topic appropriate for Team Fortress Wiki:Discussion, which I expect may come as the template is finished and validated. (Those involved in the template can make that call.)
"Helpful" is still not the word. "Annotated" is a precise word, but a stuffy mouthful. (It is much more a "Locations Map" or "Map of Locations".) You point out that the marked-up overview has some redundancy with the overview in the infobox, which can be a difficult question to resolve on a User Talk page.

Well hello there, this sure is a welcome surprise, since people don't really thank me for welcoming them. And because of that, I say: Thank you! for showing appreciation. Glad to know that I cheer up atleast someone with the work I do.
Now, regarding your will to help the wiki. As far as I know, I don't think that your knowlegde on strange weapons can come in handy, since everything regarding that has already been covered on the wiki (Although I'm not quit sure). But don't be dissapointed, for there are a multitude of other things you can do. At the bottom of the Main page, you'll find a table containg every single page which is incomplete at the moment, allowing you to see where you're needed the most.
And that's about it for this message. Thank you once again for thanking me, and I wish you a pleasent rest of the day, and an enyojable stay.

They just aren't able to appreciate the quality of your translations, since there are no other korean translators to give them feedback about you, other then you (I think). Your Goldrush strategy sandbox - promised feedback!

Heyo,

I don't have much to add about the content itself, but to reduce the entry length, avoid sentences with generic words such as "doing everything in one's power to stay alive as long as possible" or "once again" or "in every way imaginable," etc. I could cut many of these paragraphs down to half their original length. Your syntax errors are still here; this time it's mostly things that spell check will not catch, such as "duo" vs. "due," "its" and "it's," "RED" vs. "Red."

Examples that I see:

  • "While this strategy can work against an unprepared or otherwise distracted team, it miserably fails when coming face to face with competent defenders" - don't bother giving strategy directed towards incompetent enemies.
  • "Duo to this limitation" - you use "duo" instead of "due" extremely often.
  • "A Soldier is a very important aspect to the attacking team, especially on Goldrush. His explosive primary makes him quit good when it comes to dealing with Engineer nests, which are plentiful on map. And his ability to Rocket jump allows him to reach and capture crucial positions for his team." - This has nothing to do with Goldrush itself.
  • "...a Scout won't be able to do much here." - you need to reference an experienced Scout player for this map instead of subjective experience.

Hope this helps, -- InShane (talk) 15:21, 11 September 2021 (UTC)

Ah, thank you for the feedback very much! I will try to correct the mistakes which felt under my radar, but you've managed to snuff out. Such as that pesky duo/due and even more "difficult-to-spot" its/it's. I will also try to shorten the sections a bit by removing those "generic words" I seem to really like. But other then that, I don't think I'll be able to cut the page's length in half, just aren't experienced enough for that yet. Anyway, thank you once again for quickly evaluating my strategy and pointing out the flaws within it, it's greatly appreciated. (Ha, used the correct it's this time around).
Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 16:19, 11 September 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
To not be completely critical, let me say it's clear you've improved over the past year. There are little rules you can come up with for your own writing style that helps avoid errors. One I use when writing formally (as a teacher) is to never use shortened words like "it's" and "they're" - I'll always write out the full "it is" or "they are."
Your information is growing and growing. One way to make the page look less intimidating...hmm. Instead of shortening text like in my style, you could create drop downs. They would be for each Stage and Checkpoint -> the 9 classes, or the 9 classes -> Stage and Checkpoint. -- InShane (talk) 22:04, 11 September 2021 (UTC)
Hmmm... I image that dropdowns have something to do with tables right? If that is so, then could you please teach me how to create them, since I'm even worse with tables. Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 08:10, 13 September 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21

! "completely empty"

"Added some information to the ... strategy so that it is not completely empty. "

IMO, that is not the real justification for adding to Strategy, and the phrase alerts me that I would find "filler".

The reason to add to Strategy is to help players play more successfully, but yes, a quick examination of present Erebus strategy is that what is there now is somewhat better than simple observations of the map. However, much of what I am seeing is still pretty generic, pressing the point of filler.

(Time-limited look only at Pyro on Erebus) On one hand, pointing out overlookable sneak paths like the "small hole" in "one of the Mineshafts" is both helpful and I did not know that!", but which one of the Mineshafts and where in that Mineshaft?

An interesting thing about Team Fortress2 is how approaching a map changes so much depending on loadout. That different Pyro Primaries exploit different types of spaces is pretty much in keeping with the original intent of the game. Explaining which Pyro Primaries work well in which map geometries which should be generally covered in the class strategy, but is probably not needed to be repeated room by room on each map (unless the map was really designed to favor a particular weapon.) (Even so, that Pyros should airblast enemies off of Upwards or Precipice borders on obvious.)

Airblasting enemy off Caps is what Pyros are generally supposed to do; you point it out on defense of Elevation, but it is also just as true for offense Pyro on the same point. Really is even more important on offense as pushing defenders off the point lets the timer run, and should be addressed on main Pyro Strategy.

That a point has a fast Cap is important to all classes, not just to one class on one map. Sometimes, it might be important to mention a particularly fast point, but it should be general knowledge that some points are fast. It is a generally strategy that defenders should not overextend on defense of Final, just as Attackers should Cap when they find Final undefended.

M I K A D O 282 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃 🎃🎃 🎃🎃 (talk | contribs) (Help Wanted!) 16:49, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

Yes, there are places on (all?) maps that Jumping is useful, but usually it is obvious. But sometimes it is not obvious, and when it should be mentioned, it should not be mentioned class-by-class. This discussion reminds me of first point of Hellstone, where ICS did confirm that the first point was designed to require defenders to jump for more effective defence.

Maybe I worded myself a bit wrongly in the edit description. Obviously, I don't just add strategy solly for me adding it. I add it to (hopefully) help out the few individuals who decide to check out the strategy section of the wiki. And to (hopefully) share some of the useful tricks I've learned while playing that specific map. Although, seeing a completely empty page fill up with (hopefully) useful information does trigger something in my monkey brain.
Regarding your point about the Pyro-mineshaft "thingie"; There is a good reason why at the top of every strategy page, you can find a note which instructs you to first read the main page of that specific map, before reading its strategy page, in order for you to become accostumed to its locations. I mean...I can, and I did previously, add some notes regarding the exact position of the locations is was mentioning in my strategy, but I quickly find out that this was just making the page longer and more complicated, and was intruding on the territory of regular map pages.
I aren't saying that cramped spaces are good for Pyro's, I'm just saying which locations contain these cramped spaces, so that Pyro's know where to "operate". I can just say that Sawmill is a decent location for Pyro, but I also like to state a reason why, so I add a note saying that the Sawmill contains many cramped spaces, hence its Pyro-friendly status.
I am aware that my strategy still has many flaws, and I am trying to get ridd of them. As you instructed me, I recentlly switched off from the narrative writting style and into a bullet-point style. So that hopefully helps. Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 10:22, 1 November 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
Sorry, I have been away with work and family and more of the same next month. I wanted to prioritized responding here.
  • I greatly appreciate the bulleted format.
  • I only commentted on the Pyro strategy, because of no time to look at the rest.
  • I think it is observational to say where the map is cramped, especially when it is obvious where the map is cramped; but I grant that it can be useful to state where a map has a particular, e.g. very open vs not.
  • I appreciate more focus on the not so obvious (even I forget about Upwards' hidden shortcut from RED Final Spawn to Third Point).
  • I found Erebus very disorienting, especially the later stages, an illustration of all of the routes, especially the not so obvious flanks, would be more useful than low strategy that risks tldnr.
  • I started going through your additions to Hellstone. Some of it is good to a bit better to good; some, I am not sure about, but I had to stop halfway though reading (already a hour late). You are right that some of the Skeleton-specific needed to be moved off.

I want Wiki Cap.

Hello. I am willing to try hard to get the Wiki Cap. What do I need to do for this? Far (talk) 04:52, 3 November 2021 (UTC)

Now THAT'S the fighting spirit I like to see from a new editor. And because of that motivation of yours, I'm sure that obtaining a wiki cap won't be too hard at all eh?
Anyways, let's first mention what requirements you'll need to meet in order to gain a hold of the treasured Wiki Cap. Now, you won't find the following information anywhere else on wiki. But based on my observations of another translator, in this case the Korean translator Joeun, I have concluded that in order to obtain a wiki cap (As a Russian translator), you have to:
  • Create and fully translate around 500+ pages
  • Consistently update the russian part of the wiki for about 10-12 months
  • Contribute additional 1000+ edits to the Main (English) part of wiki.
  • Take part in the numerous disscusions which will surely appear.
  • All in all, contribute around 4000 edits in total.
Finally, after doing all of that, there is about 75% chance that you will receive the treasure you've been chasing after.
Now...I know that these enourmes prerequisites can seem rather daunting at first (Although they ain't that big in the grand scheme of things)). But do not fret Mr.Far, for with a little hard work, consistency and more hard work, no goal is unachievable. I certainly hope that this list won't scare you away from becoming the next great Russian translator which the wiki needs. And I also sincerely hope that one day you realize, that it isn't all about the dammed wiki cap. For the great privilege of editing the official TF Wiki consists of so much more then just chasing after a group of pixels. It is a opportunity to learn something new, to grow as a person, to give something back to the game which we all know and love. If none of these things interest you, and the only thing on your mind is obtaining that cap.....well, I certainly won't say what's best for you, you get to decide that.
But whatever choice you pick, whether that be immediately running away or continuing the pursuit of your dream item. I, most importantly of all, hope that you enjoy the stay on our little wiki, and have a pleasant rest of the day.
Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 17:55, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
Hi there, I'd like to say that this is not true. None of this is a requirement, the real requirements can be found here. Please don't spread misinformation.
GrampaSwood (talk) 21:18, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
Sorry if I said anything wrong. I know that my imaginary requirements are not correct. Since they are just a simple observation of some other users. But Far asked for specifics, so I gave him a representation of what a translator may need to do in order to receive the cap. Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 00:48, 24 February 2022 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
Don't do this, it'll give false expectations as people will see this is a hard goal to go for. Always link them to this page.

Map Overview Images Tip

Hi there, I noticed you've been uploading map overview images to the wiki. Though, the way you're doing it does seem to produce some low quality images such as your recent upload of the Doublefrost overview, so I figured I could give you a bit of help for some better screenshots in the future.

In case you weren't aware, there's a specific command you can use for taking overview screenshots, cl_leveloverview <insert # here>. This command requires sv_cheats 1 to be enabled, but allows you to basically get a far greater overview than you would by just noclipping outside of the map. The best way to use it is to go the center of the map (or as close as you can get) with noclip activated, look down at the ground, and then use cl_leveloverview to display as much of the map as possible. The cl_leveloverview command's level of zoom can be adjusted by just increasing or decreasing the number variable, while moving back or forward adjusts how much of the interior of buildings you can see.

There's a short tutorial made by UEAKCrash here you can watch if you need a much better visual example. Hope this helps. :)

Map locations template ready for public use

Heyo! Sincere apologies for the extended wait time - life's been super busy. The map locations template is now public and can be found here. The documentation has undergone a lot of changes, so I'd strongly advise you to read it before use. Feel free to ask any questions you may have, or do tell me if some parts of the documentation need better clarification. Also, please remember to mark the outdated images for deletion once they are no longer in use, thanks.

Ah! Right on time, just when I'm finishing other wiki activities. Once again, thank you very very much for creating this template. Now we can have "helpful overviews" which are up to wiki standards. I'll be sure to replace the old images in the upcoming week. The Template is very nice, so it shouldn't take too long. However, I'm afraid that I don't exactly know how to implement your template, partially from my lack of knowledge concerning templates. From what I've read, I have to first create a subpage (which I presume that goes like this: Template:Map locations/insert map name here), and then I add that subpage as a template to the map article, right? Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 23:43, 8 January 2022 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
Yep! I figured some users might not be too familiar with templates, which is why I included a guide from Wikipedia that explains the basics of template usage. Say, you want to include the template on Pier, all you'd need to do is navigate to the Pier article and include the template in the proper section. In this case that would be "Helpful overview", though I'd strongly suggest scrapping that section and just add it to the end of the "Locations" section like so: {{Map locations/Pier}}. Map locations proj

Hi!

I've been messing around with this new template and, since you've done a great deal with overviews before, I've figured you'll probably be too, so I'd like to, uhm, coordinate our future efforts somewhat.

I also ran into some hard limitations of it already, but as of now at least PL and A/D maps are (more or less) doable.

-User Foxbite avatar.jpgfoxbite (talk) ⨯ (contribs) 11:41, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

Back in July of 2021, I already compiled a list of every single map location into my sandbox, which is here User:Lolimsogreat21/Sandbox2/Scout. So the work of having to mark locations for every single map is largely complete. However, a few problems arose. The first one is the fact that we have to migrate these completed map templates from my sandbox and into the main-space. Which will be a slight problem, considering that the latest change to the main template has corrupted images of the map templates in my sandbox. And thirdly, I've noticed that the first few maps which I "upgraded" from the old helpful overviews are...not quite accurate. Especially when compared to the ones in your Sandbox. So despite this, your offer to help is still greatly welcome, as there is still quite a lot of work to do in order to properly implement these templates in to actual map articles.
Speaking of your sandbox, it seems like an excellent place for monitoring the status of our work. Since you appear to be good with tables, you should expand them in order to include the maps which are also found in my aforementioned sandbox. So that we can first migrate the maps in my sandbox first to your sandbox, where they will be fixed and improved upon, before finally implementing them.
Thank you once again for offering help, its greatly appreciated. Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 21:45, 10 January 2022 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
Sup, I updated my sandbox accordingly. Take a look! User Foxbite avatar.jpgfoxbite (talk) ⨯ (contribs) 10:24, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

I could certainly use some help. But before anything gets done, I first need to get a proper map for filming. Which will take some time. Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 01:09, 5 March 2022 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
Unfortunately, I cannot get us a proper filming map. I tried creating a good demonstration map my self. But to do that, I need to first own the engine upon which the TFC is based, and that is Half Life. I tried all options, but every single map maker requires you to have half life, which costs too much for me. So, I guess that this is the end of the line. Sorry. Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 23:03, 14 March 2022 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
For our luck, I do own Half life, perhaps you can teahc me the basics and I can try making one. What do you think? Yossef | Talk | Contributions 14:31, 16 March 2022 (UTC)
Well, after some thought, I've got a better idea. Turns out that although I can't compile my map into something playable, I can still use the map maker to its full extent. So, for that reason, I think that it's best if I create a demonstration map first, before you, or someone else I trust, swoops in and compiles it, eh? That way, you can simply relax and not have to download any programs, while I setup the map in about two week's time. Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 19:31, 17 March 2022 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
Of course, if you are really enthusiastic about making a map, then you don't have to wait for me. I can give you a brief explanation now and you can immediately get to work. This way, we will have two demonstration maps in development. After we're both done, we will show our progress to the wiki community and let them decide which one they think is better. Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 23:18, 17 March 2022 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
yeah, I don't mind trying making a map. I thought that maybe you can create a sandbox or something in your profile as a tutorial on on the basics on making a map in Goldsrc, if its not too much of a hassle of course, if not you can add me on Steam and do it there. Furthermore, as you said, we can let the community decide which map to use, or for feedback. I’m excited for this project! Yossef | Talk | Contributions 08:18, 18 March 2022 (UTC

ETF2L Ultiduo Medal Images

Hey! I saw that you remade the images for Tournament Medal - ETF2L Ultiduo and I'm liking the way they look but I noticed that the medal itself is using the wrong material file. It seems the default texture for that model is the one for Tournament Medal - ESH Ultiduo so the proper material file for the ETF2L Ultiduo Medal need to be extracted from the game files, placed into your custom folder with the same file path found in the game files for the ESH Ultiduo Medal, and renamed to what the ESH Ultiduo material file is named. If you need more clarification on how to do that or if you have any other questions on HLMV or image-making, feel free to ask! H20verdrive (talk) 00:32, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I am afraid that I need your help. I understanding extracting the file (Which is named etf2l_ultiduo_2012.mdl, I presume) from the materials/model/player/items/all class folder, and then putting it into my costume folder. But I can't figure out what do you mean by making it have the same file path. Also, the ESH Ultiduo already uses the "etf2l_ultiduo_2012.mdl" as a name, so renaming the file "etf2l_ultiduo_2012.mdl" into "etf2l_ultiduo_2012.mdl" doesn't make sense to me.
Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 15:43, 8 March 2022 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
Aight. I've manage to figure out how to create a path. Turns out, it's just creating a whole bunch of folders which mimic the real game files. Plus, I copied over the remaining material and model files, not just the .mdl one. However, the HLMV is still showing the wrong texture. Probably because I still don't know how to do the last step, and that is to rename it properly. Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 17:49, 8 March 2022 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
So we extract "etf2l_ultiduo_ribbon_2012.vmt" from the game files, and place it in custom/[anycustomfolder]/materials/models/player/items/all_class. Now that the vmt we want the medal to use, we rename the file to "esh_ultiduo_ribbon_2012.vmt" After that, the medal should show up with the correct texture if you reload the model or refresh(F5) in HLMV. H20verdrive (talk) 02:36, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Oh, it was that simple... Apparently I was just trying to add the wrong vmt. files into my custom folder. Well then, thank you and sorry for wasting your time with my clumsiness. I will try to replace my old etf2l ultiduo images as fast as possible
Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 00:18, 10 March 2022 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
Although that "as soon as possible" sentence was a lie, I did manage to finally replace the Ultiduo medals. Just wanted you to know. Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 15:57, 30 April 2022 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21

Naming consistency

Hi there,

Outside of a few things, names of files don't have to be changed for consistency. Some exceptions to this are workshop images, map images missing the map name, horrible names (e.g. Screenshot_2017_12_15_23_45_27_tf2.png), item icons, etc.

Changing the name from Dustbowl Stagetwo to Dustbowl Stage Two is unnecessary and just requires more work for both staff and you.

I noticed your talk page has a bit of an indent, this is caused by the {{Quotation}} template a bit further up. I'm not sure if you want to fix this, but you can do so by removing the indents (the 2 colons) in front of the template. This shouldn't change how the discussion looks that much.

Hi there,

In the video, the ammo counter doesn't decrease after .6 seconds, which is when it's counted as firing again.
BLU Wiki Cap.png | s | GrampaSwood Praise the Sun! (talk) (contribs) 14:54, 14 August 2024 (UTC)

The ammo got deducted at precisely the 10.47 seconds, while the muzzle flash occurred at 10.40. I still think it that it is a 0.06 interval because the projectile spawns at 10.41. Still its under 1 second for sure Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 18:26, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
Attack interval should be from ammo consumed to next ammo consumed.
BLU Wiki Cap.png | s | GrampaSwood Praise the Sun! (talk) (contribs) 18:29, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
Here is a larger excerpt: [1]. I guess you can revert the edit and set it back to 0.1 second, because I cannot conclude a thing from my recording based on ammo management, since ammo at times isn't even spent when it should be, only for two or even three ammo points to be deducted at once. Hi there,

Please use show preview on the map stubs, as you leave them pretty broken a times. Some of the game mode types you've added caused the category to become incorrect (such as the 3CP and VSH articles), it's also spelled "community-created" with a dash rather than without, the update link should use {{update link}} and not link to the patch article, and there is no {{ra}} at the top.

Toxic Locations section

Hi there,

I've noticed some odd things in the locations section of Toxic which are not necessary or inconsistent with other articles:

  1. It's not necessary to mention the difference between the two locations if it's purely visual, this is expected in most TF2 maps and is a core part of the game, thus not necessary to explain (in the same way you wouldn't explain "this is the RED spawn, where RED members spawn. It features spawn doors that are only accessible by the RED team).
  2. Headers should ideally be absent from the locations on koth maps, those locations can be done similarly to how any other location is done: a bolded bullet point.
  3. It is not necessary to bold every location, just the bullet point instances.
  4. Strategy should generally be kept to the strategy articles.
  5. Capture points are the checkpoints in Payload, control points are the objectives in Control Point, King of the Hill, Attack/Defend, etc.
  6. It's not necessary to dedicate an entire section to a hazard, that's not what the Locations are for but that's what the environmental hazards article is for. It's also not necessary to dedicate a section to something like the water around a map. Map descriptions and unique features (worth nothing, a simple hazard or 3D water are not notable) belong in the intro of the map.
  7. Things like hazards don't need to be capitalised, capture point was also inconsistently capitalised (control Point, Control point, capture Point, Point). It should exclusively be all lowercase, except for the game mode's name.

There were also a few grammar and spelling mistake (its vs it's, then vs than, and the aforementioned capitals).
BLU Wiki Cap.png | s | GrampaSwood Praise the Sun! (talk) (contribs) 19:13, 13 October 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for the heads-up, and thanks for your corrections to my edit.
  1. Yeah, in hindsight it is redundant to mention the aesthetical differences between the team sides. Thank you for correcting that, as well as showing me the font-color template, which I didn't know exists .
  2. I wanted avoid dumping all the location images into one giant gallery, hence why I spread them out over multiple, or in this case three, headings. I see now that its possible to have multiple galleries under one heading, for some reason I incorrectly thought that would look ugly; so many thanks once again for correcting that.
  3. I mostly italicized locations that are mentioned outside of their bullet point instances, I think that is perfectly fine, but putting them into quotes also works too.
  4. What strategy? You mean that small blurb about the Balcony being useful for Snipers? Yes it's a small infraction, but then again many map articles, including the featured 2Fort mention the Battlements as often being utilized by Snipers. Yes, any specific or weapon strategy belongs to that map's respective strategy page, but general things such as some areas only being accessible by blast jumping or there existing a long Sniper sightline don't seem so outrageous.
  5. I'll keep that terminology in mind from now on, especially for my future Darkmarsh edit.
  6. I will also admit that the Water part was unnecessary, but some hazards should be mentioned. Obviously, the location of every pumpkin bomb is redundant, but some major hazards can be counted as locations. Such as how the Upward article mentions the large Pit on the final checkpoint.
  7. I see I need to work on my capitalization and grammar consistency, I'm a bit older now so hopefully such mistakes should soon disappear, once again thanks for the heads-up. Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 19:43, 13 October 2024 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
For 2., it is okay to split them up, but it is not necessary to do so with headers. Other articles do this as well, just without the use of headers (or at least using a semicolon instead ;).
For 3., just using the capitalised names should be enough, but quotes are fine too.
For 6., mentioning a hazard is fine, but do it in a way that describes everything. E.g. "Vat Room: A room with a catwalk above it, there is a large vat that will instantly kill players who fall into it and spits their skeleton back out". The way it was done on Toxic before was just mentioning it as an entirely separate location.
Also I forgot to mention, but any unrelated links should not be added. E.g. the consolation prize achievement (which had no relation to the achievement), and the Xen healing pool on Outburst.

I also wonder, what is the sandboxed article for? It seems like a technical coverage of how to make a TF2 door in Hammer, rather than something for the TF Wiki.

Thank you very much for that, I will remember to keep that in mind from now on.
As for the sandbox, I suppose that it is indeed way to technical for the wiki. I will most likely remove the properties table and scale back on some text. However, I think that doors as a topic are more then notable enough to be included in their own article. They are present on almost every map and can have many different functions. The goal of the article would be to explain overall how they work, the notable bugs associated with them, include a gallery showing of every current model of doors and gates found in the official tf2 maps (similar to how we have a gallery for every spawn cabinet and payload cart) and finally, a large map overview table showing of the location of every door found in every map; and how their function changes as the map progresses. I'd recommend having a discussion about it before publishing it, as it may be decided that it's not enough before that. What you describe of having every door in the gallery and having every map's doors shown is an incredible amount of work that no one else is going to bother updating afterwards, and also not really what a reader wants to know.

I need to clarify myself, when I said that I wanted to show the location of every door on the map, I didn't mean literally every door, as that would also include spawn doors. Their inclusion is redundant, as the locations of spawns, and thus their spawn doors, is already/will be covered by the map locations template. With them gone, there is only really a couple of maps that have doors that both teams can use, and out of those, most only have one or two shutter's (think dustbowl second stage) with only maps like swiftwater standing out in their heavy use of timed gates.
I want to finish my sandbox first, before asking the community whether it's worth getting published. I hope I didn't come of too brash in this whole thing.Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 22:13, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21

Sandbox 2 article images

All the map images on there should be under user namespace, as with every other user image. Please move them and mark the redirects for deletion. Remember to also remove every category that isn't Category:User images.

But this edit will eventually be shipped to the main space? Does this mean I would have to rename it twice, first to user images and then back to normal? Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 19:50, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
I mean, I will do it, but it seems kinda redundant. Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 19:55, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
Also, a question before I move them. Most of these maps contain skial in their file name, since skial is usually the only server that hosts them. Should we include that as part of the naming, or get rid of it in order to not infringe upon the no-3rd-party-promotion policy of the wiki? Yeah as specified on the upload page, images for user space should be prefixed with the username. As for Skial, that should be removed. Also, if this game mode is only ran on Skial, a mainspace article is unlikely.

The article Zombie Escape already exists, I'm just preparing an overhaul of it as it is a stub. But fine, I'll move the images over the night. Lolimsogreat21 (talk) 23:45, 9 November 2024 (UTC)Lolimsogreat21
