The Sniper is a ranged class, He and the Spy are the only classes that can headshot.

In the Sniper's case, the Sniper Rifle or Huntsman can be used.

Headshots are guaranteed Critical hits, and most often resault in an instant kill.

Good aiming is required on your part, but this makes him deadly in the right hands. He can also use Jarate to extinguish teammates, hinder enemies, deal lasting damage and also reveal to Spies.

* Your Sniper's laser dot is visible to the enemy, and if they see it you may lose the element of surprise. To avoid this, you can aim at a windowsill or a nearby object so that they cannot see the dot until you are ready to switch your aim to them. Alternatively, you can use it scare people from entering or exiting places, as most classes will not willingly go into a Sniper range, and will take another route. This tactic, however, doesn't always work with Scouts.

* A single uncharged headshot to an enemy is usually enough to kill most classes. So if pressed for time always take the headshot.
+
The Sniper is a long-range support class that focuses on the elimination of high-priority targets. As a light class with only 125 health, the Sniper generally stays behind his team's lines to avoid taking heavy fire. The Sniper is one of the three classes that can gain headshot bonuses (the others being an Ambassador-wielding Spy and a Pyro who can airblast the arrows from the Huntsman). Headshots are guaranteed critical hits, and often result in an instant kill when fully charged (with the exception of anyone with a bullet resistance). The ability to do this consistently can set apart an amateur Sniper from an elite one.

* When going for a headshot on a moving target, aim slightly ahead of the enemy (with Huntsman, also aim slighty above). Leading your target can save your teammates and even yourself.
+
3

* Keep in mind that even in the best of hiding spots, the freezecam will give away your position the moment you kill your first victim. Therefore, it is a good idea to switch locations after killing an enemy if possible, especially after killing another Sniper. A way to avoid this is to move into an unrecognizable corner as soon as you make a kill. The enemy may not be able to recognize where you are, buying you a little more time. If you are firing from a Sniper nest, then this is less of a problem, since you are expected to be there.
+
Quick Tips
* If you are experienced, try to fire through unexpected angles or through small holes, making the enemy wonder how you shot them. These holes are called loopholes and they are literally everywhere. Usually they only allow you a small area to shoot into but for the perk of not being spotted.
+
* Snipers need to be aware of their surroundings because they are often the main targets of Spies and enemy Snipers, both of which they are most vulnerable to. Equip the Razorback, SMG, or Jarate to help with Spies. While reloading your rifle, look around and move from side to side to Spy check the area you're sniping from.

* Keep an eye on your HUD and if you see a lot of people around you dying from backstabs, there may be a dangerous Spy nearby. If you suspect this is the case, you may wish to switch to your Melee weapon, or run. Teammates killed by a nearby Spy also often have a distinctive death cry.
+
* Try not to crowd up the class! Too many Snipers can ruin a team's viability. If you're not getting kills as a Sniper, you're not contributing and thus should consider switching classes until there are fewer Snipers.

* Experiment with the correct mouse sensitivity. Too low, and you will have difficulty aiming at dodging enemies. Too high, and you may have problems aiming for small targets; their heads being one.
+
* Put your crosshairs on a target before scoping to maximize mobility.

* To stop the automatic re-zoom of the Sniper Rifle's scope after ever shot, either press the zoom button again after firing a shot, or turn off the automatic re-zoom in the options menu.
+
General
* While Snipers are classed as a support class and may seem like a defensive class, they can be used effectively on offense as well. On maps like Dustbowl, for instance, they are invaluable for peeking out and taking out enemies; particularly Engineers, their Sentry Guns, other Snipers, Demomen setting traps on the objective, and of course any part of a Medic/Heavy combo. Don't be afraid to try them on offense in more close quarters maps such as 2Fort though, especially if the enemy team is turtling in the Intelligence room.

* A few charged up shots can take out buildings, which is helpful for attacking Sentry Guns if you are far enough away that the Sentry Gun does not target you. (Hitting any visible part of the Sentry Gun should do damage.)

* On many maps crouching will allow you to be a much smaller target and can shift your field of vision while zoomed. For example: crouching in the back part of a front entrance in 2Fort allows you to see the upper tier of the opposing fort but makes it harder to look into the water.

**If you are entering a new area (like moving to the second Control point) try and use crouch to peek out. It will be likely the enemies have already set up a defense and are on the look out for enemies. Always remember that crouching will dramatically decrease your movement speed, but you can use this to your advantage because moving in slowly should be less noticeable than just running out.

**Crouching may also throw off inexperienced enemy Snipers going for a headshot, especially if you have just fireda shot and are retreating behind cover.

* Building off of the previous, on many maps it also allows you to hide very easily. This can be incredibly valuable in the defensive opening of Payload maps, as often Snipers have to take out an enemy Sniper before they themselves get shot. Crouch behind a hill/box after having your scope on an enemy's head. As the timer finishes, pop up and shoot before they know what's hit them.

* If your field of vision will only show the body of the enemy then try a fully charged body shot - in most situations this should be enough to bring them down or enough for your teammates to finish them off.
+

+
* Since your enemies can see the laser dot of your rifle, consider aiming at a doorway or other obstacle to hide your presence. They will be much easier to hit if they are not expecting you than if they are actively trying to dodge your aim. Alternatively, you can use the Huntsman, which doesn't have a laser dot (though be aware that the Huntsman does not have hitscan properties and is affected by gravity, and adjust your aim accordingly).
+
** In contrast to this, you can use your laser dot to discourage enemy advances. Most classes will not willingly walk into a Sniper's line of fire, and will instead take another route. This tactic does not always work well with Scouts, who are fast enough to slip through your aim, nor with Spies, who can use their Cloak or Disguise Kit to avoid detection. Note that the enemy can only see the laser dot when facing an object in the same direction you're facing.
+
* On a separate note, the Sniper Rifle's laser dot can also be used for Spy checking by backing into a corner, scoping in and slowly sweeping from one end of the area to the other. Since the laser dot is projected onto walls, teammates and enemies, the dot also projects onto invisible Spies. This will subtly reveal their location to both you and any bystanders by either showing other players a laser dot floating in midair or the laser dot dramatically increasing in size for the player (depending on how far away the Spy is from them. If the Spy is further away, the dot size will not change at all). Since the results of this Spy-checking method aren't as effective as Jarate or other tracking items, it is recommended that this tactic is used if you think a Spy is in the room with you and you have no other immediate alternatives.

* Take out the Medic first, a fully charged body shot will usually do the trick, although as always headshots are preferable if you believe you can do it.
+
* Watch for enemy Snipers. An uncharged headshot will instantly kill you, and experienced Snipers can fire one in a fraction of a second. If you want to charge your shot, do so behind an obstacle where you can't be seen, and peek out when you're ready to shoot. This is not a foolproof method, however, as enemy Snipers may change their position or simply wait until you show yourself.

* In a Sniper duel, pay attention to how many Snipers the enemy team has and the respawn timer. If the enemy has two Snipers and you pick them off, you may only have 10 to 12 seconds to concentrate on other targets before they try to get their revenge.
+
* Sticking to one spot might get you killed. The freezecam will give your position away after a single kill; you should switch to a new location often, especially after killing another Sniper or firing a shot from the Machina, which fires an obvious tracer that shows everyone your position.

* Listen carefully! If you are alone in a Sniper spot, listen for the sounds of footsteps or the Spy's uncloaking sound (Spies still make footstep sounds when cloaked) and switch to your Melee weapon if heard, it is an effective way to get the jump on Spies looking for an easy kill.
+
* Mobility in general is a valued trait for the Sniper. Remember that walking while zoomed is ineffective, as your speed is almost halved.

* 2Fort is perhaps one of the most common maps in which the Sniper can be effectively used. However, when Sniper duels occur, crouching tends to throw off enemy Snipers who commonly keep their aiming sights held where the heads of enemy Snipers normally sit. This method can grant you precious time to aim across the field and remove enemies from their battlements without openly endangering yourself.
+
* Pick your targets carefully. As a support class, it's always important to help your team out in the most efficient way possible, so look out for high-value targets on the battlefield, mainly Medics, Heavies, and other Snipers. By killing targets that would otherwise disrupt your aim, inflict heavy damage, or negatively impact your team, you are being a great support to your entire team.
+
** A quick shot against a Medic's patient, or the Medic himself, can force him to use his ÜberCharge early, allowing your teammates to kill the patient before he has a good chance to inflict any damage to your team on the front lines.
+
*** However, a Headshot with a Sniper Rifle will instantly kill a Medic (unless the Medic is overhealed). Take this into consideration, as you can easily take out support Medics.
+
* Disabling the automatic re-zoom option might help you, but it's not a requirement. Some Snipers prefer to not use the automatic re-zoom of the Sniper Rifle's scope after every shot. To prevent the re-zoom, turn off the automatic re-zoom in the "Advanced Options" button on the main menu.
+
** Alternately, pressing alt-fire after taking a scoped shot and before the rifle has re-zoomed will prevent the re-zoom from occurring.

* On the map Dustbowl, after capturing the first point of the first stage, go up the stairs and continue. Once you pass the cart blocking the path, take an exit out the first doorway and snipe Sentry Guns, Dispensers, RED Snipers, etc.
+
* A fully-charged shot can instantly destroy any Level 1 Building and do major damage to others. Put pressure on enemy Engineers by standing outside the range of their equipment and hitting them with charged shots. Make sure to kill the Engineers first, since harming their buildings will give them enough time to repair them, wasting your ammo and leaving you vulnerable to enemies, especially Spies and enemy Snipers. However, working in conjunction with a friendly Soldier or another Sniper can easily overwhelm the Engineer's repair capabilities.

* If your shot is fully charged and you see one or very few enemies, then you should use it on the stronger classes first, instead of classes that can be taken out with a headshot.
+
* Crouching shifts your vision downwards while making you a much smaller target (albeit a slower one). This can be useful for getting a better shot on your enemies. Crouching may also throw off enemy Snipers going for a headshot, especially if you have just fired a shot and are retreating.

* The Scout, Sniper and Medic can be taken out with a fully charged body shot if they are not buffed. Pyros with reduced health can also be taken out this way. It is best to headshot Soldiers and Demomen in order to keep your defense safe, and you should always try for a headshot on a Heavy, as they are the class that will cause the most trouble for your team in most situations.
+
* Jumping to avoid an enemy Sniper will only make you an easier target to hit, as you will move through the air in a predictable path (unless you are air strafing).

* A Soldier wielding an Equalizer is a sure indication that he is low on health, go for the body shot to easily take out this high priority opponent.
+
* Pay attention to respawn timers, especially when facing many enemy Snipers. After killing an enemy Sniper, you may only have a few seconds to focus on other targets before they respawn and target you.

* While you cannot be headshotted if you are equipped with the full Croc-o-Style kit, that doesn't mean you are immune from enemy Snipers. A charged hit will still kill you with a single bullet, so keeping an eye out for enemy Snipers is still important.
+
* When forced into close combat (i.e. encountering an enemy at close range), you have two options: retreat and attempt a quick headshot or bodyshot, or fight with your secondary and melee weapons. A quick headshot is rarely a viable option unless you know you can make it. It's generally more advisable to retreat while firing your SMG or throwing your Jarate. Make sure to strafe while retreating to make your movement less predictable to Soldiers and Demomen. Rushing in with your melee weapon has different results depending on the weapon. The Shahanshah is primarily designed for this style of attack, and the Kukri is also viable. The Bushwacka works exceptionally if you use Jarate. The Tribalman's Shiv is better suited to surprise attacks and revealing Cloaked Spies.

* When you have an opportunity to get a headshot or even a quick body shot(e.g. someone standing still for a moment, or a Medic with a full ÜberCharge.) it is often better to simply take the shot quickly instead of charging your shot long enough to get the actual kill. A quick headshot is enough to force a lot of classes to panic and run away. (or in the case of the Medic, to deploy their ÜberCharge too early.) Also, waiting for the right shot or till your shot is charged enough can cause you to miss your opportunity completely. Simply making the opposing team feel uneasy or just weakening them a little for other teammates to finish off easily is very effective.
+
* When sniping, it's common for one or more Spies to simultaneously attack you. You can use walls to protect your back while you attack if you don't use the Razorback. But keep alert, as a Spy can kill you just as easily with their Revolver or backstab you from the side, if you're not careful.
+
** If Spies become a problem even after equipping the Razorback, consider equipping the Jarate and the Bushwacka. The Jarate can easily expose enemy Spies and the Bushwhacka allows the player to kill a Spy coated in Jarate with only one hit as opposed to two with the Kukri (save for random critical hits). For a more offensive and aware Sniper, this strategy is often more effective than equipping the Razorback, as it allows you to eliminate Spies with relative ease. However, the Spy may take advantage of the Bushwacka's damage vulnerability, simply backing up and gunning you down.
+
** Alternatively, you can stay near your teammates for support, preventing Spies from attacking you as easily.

* If an enemy engages you in close combat, you have two methods of fighting: Retreating while trying to headshot the enemy, or switching to other weapons. While uncharged Sniper shots still do damage, an enemy will likely kill you after a series of missed headshots, in which case switching to secondary or melee weapons is a better idea.
+
Bodyshots versus Headshots
+
Generally, a Sniper should be using the power of headshots to their advantage to kill or control enemies. However, there are cases where a bodyshot may be easier or more useful.

Weapon Specific
+
* No-scope bodyshots are useful when dealing with opponents up close, whereas a headshot is much harder to pull off without practice.
+
* Sometimes, just the presence of a Sniper is enough to deter enemies from crossing through an area. Despite this, there may be enemies who will be willing to test your aim, such as Scouts or disguised Spies. You can use charged bodyshots to deal with them if your aim isn't up to snuff.
+
* If an enemy Sniper is more experienced than you or is out-sniping you, using charged bodyshots to kill them outright or uncharged shots to throw off their aim may be a valuable utility.
+
* Engineers are most often around or hiding among their buildings to keep themselves safe from headshots. In cases like this, a fully charged bodyshot may be your only option, as he will be protected by his Sentry Gun or Dispenser otherwise.
+
* If enemies are aware of your presence and are actively firing at you to throw off your aim, going the easier route of shooting them with a bodyshot can kill them, or at the very least shake off beefier targets while you retreat.
+
* With the Sydney Sleeper, your headshots are only able to deal Mini-Crit damage, and you cover your foes in Jarate so you rely less on headshots and let your teammates finish them off for you. This weapon works best with bodyshots as a result.
+
** The Sydney Sleeper allows you to extinguish teammates no matter where you shoot them. Use bodyshots or no-scopes to your advantage in protecting teammates.
+
** Using 'quickscopes' on opponents will cover them in Jarate for at least 2 seconds, making it easier to kill them with Mini-Crits if needed.
+
* Despite their uses, it is important to never become complacent in using only bodyshots. Though you may get results easier, and there is no shame in using them when you have to, the difference in damage per second and your importance as a high-priority elimination class can make it detrimental to spend most of the game charging comparatively weaker shots-- especially against competent Medics who are actively using ÜberCharge. The decision between charging a shot or killing big threats like Medics, Spies, or other Snipers in a fraction of a second could be the difference between your team winning the game or having you and your entire team wiped out. Use bodyshots wisely!

| For a more defensive and long ranged Sniper. Contains the Sniper Rifle which provides consistently high damage from a long range. The Razorback helps defend you from Spies and the Tribalman's Shiv bleeding effect means that, although less damage is inflicted, the attacker is more likely to retreat - which is important as this combination features less close-range damage.

| For a more experienced, support Sniper. This setup relies heavily on your Sniper Rifle, and you're ability to aim for the head almost every time. Use your Jarate on large groups of enemies to aid your team, to extinguish yourself or burning friendlies, to expose would-be sneaky Spies, or in combination with your Bushwacka to dispatch 1 or 2 enemies quickly. This setup is more effective when staying near other teammates.

Tribalman's Shiv

| This setup works best when teamed with a second Sniper. The Sydney Sleeper will hit the opponent with Jarate followed by a body-shot by the next Sniper allowing the Snipers to quickly eliminate targets without having to aim for a headshot. The Submachine Gun and Tribalman's Shiv may be used to reveal cloaked Spies allowing the second Sniper to eliminate the revealed Spy.

+
* Aim for the head. A headshot will automatically crit, and a fully charged headshot is the only thing short of a backstab that can instantly kill a fully Overhealed Heavy.

Kukri

| For a more offensive and medium ranged Sniper. The Huntsman provides higher and faster damage output at a closer range while the Submachine Gun acts as a secondary defense for when you are being attacked at close range or if you run out of arrows. The Kukri provides higher damage and is intended more to kill your opponent than to force them into retreat. However, this combination lacks the power that the Sniper Rifle provides at long range.

|-
+
* A fully charged Bodyshot can instantly kill Scouts, Engineers, Spies, Medics, and other Snipers if they are not Overhealed. A notable exception is a Medic with the Vaccinator, which can provide him with a 10% damage resistance.
! align="center" |

Jarate

! align="center" |

Tribalman's Shiv

| Using Jarate with the Huntsman works very well due to the advantages of the bow: more mobility, less vulnerability to Spies due to being less isolated and not having to scope, and higher damage at close quarters while moving. Good Huntsman Snipers are able to protect themselves fairly well in close engagements without the SMG. Jarate works well to increase the low damage of bodyshots with the Huntsman in a tough situation but also to assist the team in finishing off Spies, putting out fires on groups, and increasing damage against tough enemy groups such as Heavy/Medic pairs. Rifle Snipers are often too far away to get this sort of use out of Jarate, but Huntsman Snipers are usually closer to the action. Choice of melee weapon is up to preference, however the Shiv's higher overall damage and bleed can work very well with Jarate, since Jarate can be used either before hitting an enemy or after to increase the damage of the bleed. Pyros will be encountered more often at Huntsman ranges, so the Bushwacka is a much riskier choice.

|-
+
* Keeping your back against a wall while zoomed in can protect you from a backstab, but you should still be wary of Spies. On the other hand, keeping your back against a wall will leave you more open to splash damage from rockets.
! align="center" |
+
** Note that Spies can backstab 180 degrees around the back of a player, so you are still partially vulnerable even with your back against a wall.

Jarate

! align="center" |

Bushwacka

| This setup works for an offensive Sniper. Huntsman works well at mid and close range and Jarate combined with Bushwacka is a deadly combination at close range. This strategy won't be effective if the enemy team has many actively attacking Pyros.

|-
+
* Unscoped Sniper Rifle shots do 50 damage. If a target is too close, you should be using your secondary or melee weapons.

Kukri

| An extra 25 health is nothing to sneeze at, especially for Huntsman Snipers due to being closer to combat. The Kukri is preferred to take care of enemies quickly while having a better chance of surviving fire damage that you will most likely be facing in combat.

+
* The Sniper Rifle cannot deal random critical hits. Outside of headshots, only the Kritzkrieg, First Blood buff, crit boosts from Humiliation, Halloween pumpkins, and Intelligence captures will allow your Rifle to score critical bodyshots.

Bushwacka

| This setup is the weaponry for The Croc-O-Style, and will give you invulnerability to Headshots when wearing the Ol' Snaggletooth. The Sydney Sleeper isn't the best weapon for taking down high HP enemies, but a long range coating of Jarate will give your teammates an edge. The Danger Shield's extra health can allow you to be closer to the action, but be wary for Pyros since your Bushwacka makes you more vulnerable to fire, and you're not carrying Jarate. Overall, the Bushwacka is significantly harder to utilize without Jarate unless you're sniping people closer to the action.

Sniper Rifle
* Aim for the head if at all possible. However, keep in mind that bodyshots can also be deadly, particularly if you have a fully charged shot. Even if the enemy survives, your teammates can easily finish them off. Don't feel restricted to headshots, especially on low-health classes like Scouts, Engineers, medics, Spies and other Snipers, especially if said Sniper has the full Croc-o-Style kit.

* If it's possible, be sure to have your back against a wall when zoomed in. This could save you from an unfortunate backstab.

*A fully charged body shot can kill an Engineer, Scout, Sniper or Spy and might kill a Medic, so Snipers don't need to aim for their head all the time for a kill. Scouts and Spies are also very evasive classes, which means a headshot is not only unnecessary, but harder to pull off.

*While no-scoping is not usually an effective technique, it can be useful at medium ranges for a body shot to weaken an enemy allowing you to follow up with either the SMG or your Melee weapon. It does roughly 40-50 damage, which when used in combination with the SMG, Kukri or Tribalman's Shiv is very effective.

*Use no-scopes to deter, not kill. However, the 40-50 damage that the no-scope provides can still be effectively used as a "knock-out" follow up right after a barrage from the SMG or a shot from your melee weapon.

*While the Sniper Rifle never Crits randomly, it will still cause critical damage when you are ÜberCharged with the Kritzkrieg, or during Humiliation; meaning that you don't need to aim for the head to do critical damage in these situations.

*The crosshair moves slower when the Sniper is zoomed in than normal; it is more efficient to aim at the target's head before zooming in, reducing the amount of finer aiming required. Remember to wait for the Sniper Rifle to charge if targeting a Pyro, Demoman, Soldier, or Heavy, as these classes can survive an uncharged headshot.

*Although it is safest to maintain as far a distance as possible from the battle, the Sniper is also proficient at medium range since the hitboxes will become bigger; a missed shot at long range may hit at shorter ones.

*When zoomed in you should be moving, if your are not a opposing Sniper can easily take you out with a quick headshot. When scoping be sure that your are moving and after you take your shot jump and get out of the way, standing still will will make you a easy target.

*Don't be afraid to get into a battle that isn't far off from where you are. If the target is already damaged you can quickly go in and finish him off. You can also help another teammate with a enemy as well with your smg or throw some Jarate to make the battle faster.

*If an opposing Sniper is carrying the Croc-o-style kit, hit him with a full charged bodyshot rather than a headshot; the Croc-o-style kit prevents him from dying to a headshot (he will be left with 1 hp), but a fully charged bodyshot will still kill him in one shot, provided he is not buffed by an opposing Medic.

*As a Sniper, positioning is key, whether you are on the front lines or at a long distance. There are several key things to take into account when finding a location.

**First, particularly when using the Sniper Rifle, try to stay in high positions far removed from the actual fighting zone. This will reduce the damage you take and the ability of short range classes to counter you. It also allows you to cover a large area, supporting your team more effectively.

**Second, keep in mind your range of view. Restricting yourself to a single section of the map generally limits your effectiveness and your choice of targets. Try to choose a spot with a good view of multiple areas, though keep in mind that if you can see your enemy they can see you. **Third, consider how accessible you are to your enemies. The harder it is for your foes to sneak up on you, the less you have to worry about a close-range attack. Ideally you should be able to focus on sniping without worrying about an untimely Backstab.

**Finally, know the path that your enemy will have to travel. If you spend all your time watching a path that is used infrequently you will not have many targets. You will also expose yourself to enemies who often take back roads, such as Pyros, Spies and Scouts. If you watch a path that gets a lot of traffic instead you will have plenty of enemy players to shoot at, especially if they must pass through a bottleneck. With skill you can often take out several enemies quickly if they are grouped close together.

* It is far easier to get a headshot on an enemy that is moving towards you or away from you than it is to shoot an enemy that is traveling across your screen. This is especially true for Scouts.

*When you zoom in with the Sniper scope you will see the charge meter. The following is a general list of the minimum percentage of the total charge needed to get a one shot kill with the Sniper Rifle if the enemy has full health. The number in parentheses is the amount it takes if the enemy is buffed to 150%. A fully charged shot to the body will not kill any class that is fully buffed.

Note: If random damage spread is not disabled, body shot percentages will vary.

+
* Do not stay zoomed in constantly. It's easy to miss an enemy coming towards you with your narrowed field of view, or miss a chance to hit another enemy a few yards away.

* The Huntsman gives the Sniper a bow to fire arrows as projectiles while removing his ability to scope. Charging the arrow increases damage as usual, but also increases the arrow's projectile speed and horizontal arcing.

*Take note that there are exceptions to this as some weapons change the amount of health of classes. The following is a list of the minimum percentage of the total charge needed to get a one shot kill with the Sniper Rifle if the health-altered enemy has full health. It is in the same fashion as the list above.
+
* This weapon is meant for a more aggressive and mobile playstyle. In addition it greatly improves your combat capabilities at close range, at the cost of long range accuracy.

Scout wearing The Special Delivery Set
+
* The Huntsman's arrows take time to travel to your target. Lead your target unless they're headed straight for you. Arrows will always hit to the lower-right corner of the crosshair.
*HEAD - 0 (25%)

** Arrows arc downwards when fired. The longer you charge your shot, the straighter and faster your shot will fly. Aim your arrows above your target if they are far away, and constantly raise the distance above your target the farther away they are.

Huntsman
+
* A Sniper using a standard kind of Sniper Rifle has an advantage over you, since his weapon doesn't have travel time. Avoid engaging them at medium/long range unless they are under fire or are plainly unaware of your presence.

+
** If the Sniper is taking a shot and ducking behind cover in a very predictable pattern, it's possible to time your shots in order to hit him as he peeks out again. However, be sure you think about doing the same after you take the shot. If you miss, the enemy Sniper will see your arrow and know that you are reloading and completely vulnerable. If you don't move from where he last saw you, he'll quite easily predict where to shoot next.
* Because the Huntsman arrows travel slightly slower than a bullet (being a projectile), try to lead your target. Look at where they are headed and estimate their arrival. Try to line it up so they will be strafing into the direction of the arrow.

* Huntsman arrows leave a highly-visible color trail when shot. Much like the Flare Gun and Rocket Launcher, it is very obvious to everyone watching where the shot came from. So be aware every time you take a shot, that you are effectively broadcasting your position.
+
* Huntsman Snipers have higher mobility and no scope to restrict their field of view. They are also capable of landing near-instant headshots, and have an easier time defending themselves with their primary weapon.
+
** This helps in defending yourself against Spies in particular, as you do not need to scope in to deal lethal damage to them. The larger projectile hitbox will also give you a more sizable advantage in tracking them down if they cloak to escape.

* If there is cover nearby, you will usually want to duck back behind it after every shot. Don't stick around to see if your shot hit. Listen instead! When the Huntsman hits a person, it makes a distinctive sound which is always audible to the Sniper who fired it, no matter how far away the target is. Learn to listen for this, and use it to tell if your arrows hit. Headshots make a separate distinctive noise.
+
* The SMG pairs well with the Huntsman; it allows you to finish off an enemy faster if you miss a headshot and instead bodyshot them. In addition, if you run out of arrows, you will have a secondary damage source.
+
** If you equip a secondary other than the SMG, keep an eye on the amount of ammunition available. If you run out of arrows, you will only be able to use your melee weapon for direct damage.

* Don't be afraid to take "shots in the dark". Take shots at likely areas for enemies to appear, even if you don't see anyone there at the moment. For example: On 2Fort, people often come running off or across the battlements, so aiming arrows at head-height on the battlements, especially right at the edge of cover where Snipers often lurk can often catch players right as they come around the corner. Since this tactic is based largely on luck, it is one of the main reasons that the Huntsman has earned various derogatory nicknames in the player community. However it is only one useful way to use the Huntsman and it is certainly not the way to get the most out of the weapon.
+
* Use alt-fire to gently release drawn arrows without firing. Holding it drawn back for more than 5 seconds will result in a very inaccurate shot that will likely miss.
+
** Remember that the Huntsman loses aim after a few seconds. It is recommended to pull back the Huntsman only when you are certain an enemy is about to come into your line of sight. (Press alt-fire to release drawn arrows without firing.)
+
** There is a visual cue that indicates that you should cancel your shot to prevent the shot from being inaccurate. If you notice the Sniper's hands beginning to shake while drawn back, that means you have been aiming for more than 5 seconds, and the shot will fly away from the crosshair if released.
+
*** Don't overly rely on this visual cue, as you won't need to see that if you know the timing.

* In general, using the Huntsman against a Sniper with a Rifle is a bad idea. Unless you are at medium-close range, the instant travel-time of the Rifle's hitscan bullets will destroy any advantage you might have. Thus, Huntsman Snipers should not try to fight against an enemy Sniper if both of you are on your team's Sniper Deck.
+
* The Huntsman does not have a laser sight to alert enemies, giving you an edge and an element of surprise on the battlefield. Use this advantage to fire safely behind cover. Make sure to still keep your mobility, though, as the freezecam will still give away your position!
** However, you can be "out of phase" from his cover/shoot cycle and still deal damage. You can set an arrow into flight towards where he shoots from before he pops out from cover to target you. Some Snipers have a particularly predictable rhythm to their cover/shoot timing.

* Huntsman Snipers have higher overall mobility and an unrestricted field of view while charging a shot. They are also capable of making headshots without having to stop for an instant to scope, and overall can use their primary weapon to defend themselves even in point-blank encounters -- something Rifle Snipers largely cannot do. Take a Secondary Weapon that dovetails with these advantages: Jarate. Not having to Scope and shorter charge time plus being around other teammates makes you much less vulnerable to Backstabs so the Razorback should be unnecessary. The Huntsman is also very dangerous at close range and can do massive damage so the SMG is non-essential. Jarate on the other hand is fantastic for a variety of uses and is easier to use to help out your team since Huntsman users tend to advance with the other attacking classes.

*Remember that the Huntsman's arrow will fire from the same spot (which is level to the Sniper's shoulder) whether you are crouching or not!
+
* Before going around a corner, have your Huntsman fully drawn to be ready for approaching enemies. Alternately, jump around a corner while charging a shot to surprise your attackers.

* If you equip the Razorback, try to stay near a place that has ammo. Since the Razorback cannot damage an enemy, your only ranged attack would be the Huntsman and with only 13 arrows to shoot and a Kukri, Bushwacka, or Tribalman's Shiv for close combat.
+
* Avoid fighting in wide-open areas, where enemies can easily dodge your arrows. Stick to narrow spaces or mid-range combat whenever possible.

* Before going around a corner, have your Huntsman fully drawn. That way, if an enemy does come out at you, you'll be ready for him. If no one is there, use alt-fire so you don't waste an arrow and don't lose accuracy from drawing it too long.
+
* Fired arrows each have a team-colored trail and will stick in walls for a while. This can give away your position.

* Keep in mind that arrows curve downwards a little bit. Understand the arrow's trajectory before firing, and bear in mind that the trajectory will change slightly depending on your "charge level" when you release the arrow. A fully charged one should shoot straight or nearly straight.
+
* Attempt to ambush enemies; catching them off-guard will leave them with no time to dodge your arrows.

* Always use the Alt-Fire button to put away your drawn arrow if you're not going to fire. With only 13 arrows, it's best not to waste one. And with the colored streak flying across the air, you don't want to give away your position to the enemy.
+
* A friendly Pyro with any Flamethrower or a torch on Keep can light your arrows on fire, even if they're not drawn. Lit arrows have the added bonus of setting your enemies on fire. Switching weapons will cause a lit arrow to go out.

* Stay in a spot that is best suited to the Huntsman's effective range. It's much easier to kill an enemy in a tight mid-range combat situation for most people than it is to kill an enemy that has plenty of room to strafe and dodge your arrows. Fight in narrow areas such as hallways and small rooms and avoid large open areas.
+
* Since the Huntsman does similar damage to the Rifle while firing faster, you can use it to put pressure on enemy Medics and Engineers. Team up with a friendly Soldier or Sniper to quickly take down buildings or force a Medic to deploy an ÜberCharge.

* Always attempt to ambush opponents. Once players become aware that a Huntsman Sniper has targeted them they tend to dodge much more, so it's important to try to kill them while they are still unaware.
+
* The Huntsman can do a maximum of 360 damage with a fully-charged headshot. This means you cannot kill an overhealed Heavy with a single arrow, because his Medic gives him up to 450 health.
+
** To kill an overhealed Heavy under these conditions, you will need at least two headshots. Do the fully-charged headshot first, followed by a quick headshot as soon as the next arrow is ready. Regardless, it is recommended to target the Medic first before damaging the Heavy.
+
** Heavies overhealed by the Dalokohs Bar can still be killed with a fully-charged headshot, as this only increases Heavy's health to 350.

* Because your arrows follow a curved trajectory, it is often possible to hit targets out of your line of sight by firing into known hiding spots. These are commonly rooms at a higher level than yourself where attackers congregate. Note that arrows arc more, the lower the charge. So when trying to arc them into rooms you can't see into, it is often preferable to NOT charge them, and try to get them at the right level for a headshot instead.
+
* Unlike any of the scoped rifles, the Huntsman can be fired while in the air. This can allow you to surprise enemies from above. However, once drawn back, you cannot jump until the arrow is released or fired.

* Use corners to your advantage: Fire a fully charged arrow and then duck back behind a corner to avoid incoming damage. Remember, you only have 125 Health (or 150 with Darwin's Danger Shield equipped).
+
The table below lists the percentage charge needed to kill enemies with a bodyshot/headshot. Percentages greater than 100 mean you cannot kill enemies with one shot in this fashion.

* Friendly Pyros can light your arrows on fire, even when you do not have one drawn. These arrows will not do extra damage on a hit, but will light the target on fire.

Note: If random damage spread is enabled, body shot percentages will vary. All classes but the Pyro and Sniper have items that can increase or lower their total health, so only use this table as a guide.

* Since the Huntsman charges faster than the Sniper Rifle, it can deliver more damage over a short period of time. This is useful for outpacing the healing or repairing of a Medic or Engineer on a stubborn player or building. Coordinating with another Huntsman-using Sniper can bring down an enemy Sentry Gun very quickly as well.

* Even without doing Headshots, fully charged Bodyshots do fairly good damage, so you can double up charged bodyshots, but it will cost more arrows.
+
* The Sydney Sleeper gives the Sniper the ability to apply the Jarate effect on scoped shots, with the duration scaled from 2 to 5 seconds depending on the charge. This Jarate-coating effect on scoped shots can also be used to douse flames on teammates. It also charges up scoped shots 25% faster and each headshot reduces the recharge time of the Jarate by 1 second if it is equipped. The downside is the headshots only deals Mini-Crits instead of full Critical hits.
+
** Even though it can be used to douse flames on teammates, executing this is quite difficult. It is recommended to aim for the center of mass.
+
** Sharing all the downsides of Jarate in addition to the upsides, the Sydney Sleeper's Jarate debuff can be prematurely cancelled by the doused enemy in the same way that Jarate's debuff can, including through prolonged healing from a Medic, Engineer's Dispenser, or the Payload cart, being submerged in water, or touching a Resupply cabinet.
+
** The Mini-Crit headshots do not register as headshots for Achievement purposes and Scoring systems. Consider using other primary weapons if you are trying to obtain any achievements or contracts related to headshots.

Skewer
+
* The Sydney Sleeper can be described as a support-oriented version of the Sniper Rifle. Lacking the ability to perform quick and powerful full-damage Headshots, the Sydney Sleeper's "playstyle" is a mix between those of the Sniper Rifle and Jarate. Delivering Mini-Crit headshots and full-damage Bodyshots (assisted by a slightly faster charge rate), the Sydney Sleeper is not too much of a downgrade from the Sniper Rifle in terms of its raw firepower. In exchange for this loss of this firepower, the Sydney Sleeper can apply Jarate to enemies, allowing the Sniper to aid multiple teammates in combat from the safety of friendly territory, by increasing the damage of his teammates via the Jarate debuff (which increases damage against sodden enemies by 35%). In this way, the player is essentially transferring their firepower into Assists, rather than claiming kills for themself.

+
** Despite being less reliant on Headshots and more reliant on Bodyshots and Assists, the Sydney Sleeper is just as difficult to use as the Sniper Rifle, if not more difficult to use. A Sydney Sleeper Sniper should stay close to his teammates in order to not be caught off guard by Classes such as the Scout or Pyro, as the lack of "Quickscopes" (150-damage Headshots) can severely reduce the Sniper's abilities in a self-defensive situation against some of the more aggressive Classes.
* If you know an enemy is about to go around a corner after you, try to do the taunt right as they come around the corner within range. It's alright if you don't hit the initial puncture, just make sure that when you remove the arrow, they are within range and they will die.

* The arrow stab is the fastest taunt-kill in the game, and unlike most taunt-kills it can be considered a serious combat tactic. Use this to your advantage if you believe you don't have time to switch to a different weapon, or you aren't confident you can kill your opponent at close range with an arrow. In particular, if you can catch a Heavy firing his Minigun or eating his Sandvich and he's unaware of you it makes for a fairly easy (and humiliating) kill. However, keep in mind you need to live long enough to actually remove the arrow for the taunt to deliver the kill. Another situation where the taunt can be useful is if you are stunned by a Sandman-using Scout; often the Scout will rush up to you and attempt to kill you point blank after stunning you with his ball, and will not expect you to be able to respond.
+
* The darts apply Jarate onto a single target, with duration increasing by how long you charged it up. You can use each shot to "mark" opponents with the Jarate's debuff, highlighting high priority enemies for your team.

* Be careful when using the arrow stab on fast opponents. You may find that your initial stun hit will land only for them to go out of range of the killing arrow removal.
+
* An unscoped shot on a coated enemy will do 68 damage (the same as a Headshot). Use this to finish off attackers.
** Alternatively, you can quickly reallocate yourself towards your target awhile he's still stunned and do the taunt again. This time, you are sure to land a hit towards your target.
+
** A 68-damage Quickscope Headshot followed up by a 68-damage unscoped Bodyshot on the same enemy (who will be coated from the first shot) will result in death by this point if he is a Scout, Engineer, Sniper, or Spy, and hasn't had any contact with Healing/Water sources during this time. There is almost no room for error with this combo. To give more room for error, the first shot can be charged slightly. This is also the relevant strategy for dealing with enemy Pyros, Demomen, Soldiers, and Heavies.
+
* The Mini-Crit headshot ability can allow a Sniper to deal over 200 damage with a single fully charged Headshot, giving him more power against classes like the Pyro, Demoman, and Soldier, who can now be killed in one shot (if they are not Overhealed).
+
** Despite being more freely able to rely on Bodyshots, it's important to always aim for Headshots with the Sydney Sleeper, in order to maximize your damage potential.

* Taunts can be used while stunned. If you are stunned by a Sandman wielding Scout, start your Huntsman taunt while facing him. If he doesn't have the Force-A-Nature (which can cause knockback and cancel the taunt) and gets close enough, you can kill him while you are stunned. This taunt can also be used to counter another Sniper's arrow taunt, you are already in range and unless the other Sniper knows what's going on, you can get an easy kill. If the other Sniper does figure it out, the two of you may be stuck stunning each other until a third party intervenes.
+
* With the Sydney Sleeper, it is important to stick to areas where your teammates are present, or to areas where there are no enemies present aside from the occasional enemy Spy (which can easily be dealt with).
+
** The Sydney Sleeper can benefit greatly from a partnership with a friendly Engineer, who can provide great protection from various enemies, and can also supply Ammo and Health.
+
** It is a good idea to stay slightly further back from the rest of your team with the Sydney Sleeper. You cannot defend yourself as easily with the Sydney Sleeper as you can with the Sniper Rifle, due to the reduced power of your Quickscope Headshots. This is in spite of what the Sydney Sleeper's assigned loadout (set) may encourage, with the Darwin's Danger Shield component encouraging close or mid-ranged combat.

* The Skewer taunt can still stun Ubered opponents. Though they are still impervious to the damage of the arrow being removed, you've still caused them to waste a few precious seconds of their charge.
+
* In a heated firefight, focus on hitting heavier classes with charged shots to aid your teammates. Coated enemies will be more cautious before entering a battlefield.
** Choose carefully between the Medic or his ubered patient: stopping the former will waste the ÜberCharge, but it's also very likely to get you killed by the patient, while stopping the latter is only useful if the Medic is willing to waste the ÜberCharge to save his ally. Were he to change his target, you've still gained a taunt-kill in the process.
+
** Despite being less effective than just killing the enemies immediately, this can be used to control enemy movements. This is especially useful while playing around the objective of the game mode, where preventing enemies from entering or leaving an area can ease the pressure on your teammates to defend or attack the objective.

*The Skewer taunt's stabbing stun effect is useful for allies to land a hit just in case the enemy falls out of range from the kill.
+
* Prioritize hitting Spies if you find any. The Jarate debuff will temporarily nullify their Invisibility and any Disguises.
+
** The Jarate debuff will distinguish them from your teammates (if they are Disguised as members of your own team).
+
** This is especially effective if they have the Dead Ringer equipped, as when they "die", their outline will be highlighted by the Jarate effect for the duration of their charge; the Dead Ringer cannot cure Jarate.
+
** Spies who are using the Invis Watch or Cloak and Dagger can be confirmed to be using those weapons (as opposed to the Dead Ringer) if an invisible but coated figure is not seen fleeing the scene.

*If you have good reaction time this taunt can catch a Demoman as he charges toward you.
+
* The Sydney Sleeper is one of the best weapons the Sniper has for taking out Engineer buildings because of its faster charge rate and the downsides do not apply to the Engineer's buildings.

Sydney Sleeper
+
* Never try to face a Sniper head-on; he can headshot you quickly whereas you must wait a few seconds before being able to kill him. If you are forced to face one head-on, use corners and objects to safely charge your shot, and peek out to hopefully make a kill. Otherwise, rely on no-scopes.

+
** Take aim when the Sniper is busy or distracted; he is still a threat to your team, and it is still your job to deal with him. Take your time, either by waiting for a chance or taking an alternate route, to remain out of his mind/sight. You should be able to safely kill him if this goes as planned.
* Snipers with less than average aim should opt to use The Sydney Sleeper over the Rifle. You're able to deal a good amount of damage and apply the Jarate effect without having to aim for heads.

* If you have a large group of allies with you, it's possible to only get enough charge to apply the Jarate effect to targets, and quickly weaken the other team for your allies to adequately finish off.
+
* The SMG is a more viable backup weapon when an enemy is coated, so it makes a good companion.
** It is very useful for Snipers that want to assist in pushes where the enemy is moving too frantic and frequently to pull off headshots. The body shot would damage enemies and make them vunerable to Mini-Crit damage as your allies finish them off. It is a good choice for Snipers who are less-than-expert headshotters and prefer long-range over medium-range. (I.E. Huntsman.)
+
** Similarly, the Cleaner's Carbine is also rendered more effective in such a situation. Damaging and/or killing an enemy with the Cleaner's Carbine is easier when they are coated in Jarate. This can be used to charge up the Crikey Meter, which, when full, will allow the Sniper to unleash a flurry of guaranteed Mini-Crits, continuing the cycle, and making for a highly Mini-Crit-oriented playstyle.

* The Sydney Sleeper + Submachine Gun (SMG) can be an very lethal combination. If you hit a shot charged enough (50%) to cover your target in Jarate, a single clip of the SMG can deal about 250 (if you hit every bullet), without the dart damage itself. Moreover, Mini-Crits don't suffer from damage fall-off, giving you a great advantage in short and medium ranges.
+
* Even though each headshot reduces the recharge time of the Jarate by 1 second if it is equipped, the Jarate is not exactly a great combo with the Sydney Sleeper due to the slight redundancy when compared to the Sydney Sleeper's abilities. However, the Jarate can fill in the gap where the Sniper cannot douse himself with his Sydney Sleeper. Additionally, Jarate is easier to aim than shots from the Sydney Sleeper, and can be used to reveal invisible Spies in a way that the Sydney Sleeper can't (at least not easily), via "random spam", which utilizes the "Splash".
+
** Pairing the Sydney Sleeper + Jarate combo with Bushwacka can help take maximum advantage of the extra opportunities to apply the Jarate debuff.

* The Sydney Sleeper is a great unlock if you want the Jarate Mini-Crit bonus without giving up on the SMG or another secondary slot unlock.
+
* The Darwin's Danger Shield is a decent backup weapon for the Sydney Sleeper. However, the player should not be fooled by the shield's statistics and charge into the battlefield; it should be used passively as a defense against fiery weapons, like the Scorch Shot, from a distance.

* While it lacks the area of effect Jarate has, you can still cover a far away target in Jarate and give extra help to your teammates.
+
* The Bushwacka is also a great backup weapon for coated enemies.
+
** You can 'Quickscope' close-range enemies with a dart and quickly switch to the Bushwacka. However, you should avoid charging at an enemy with your Bushwacka hoping to take advantage of Sydney Sleeper's Jarate debuff; the enemy would likely retaliate and take advantage of your damage vulnerability while you hold up the Bushwacka.

* Remember that the Jarate effect doesn't take place if you are un-scoped or with a charge under 50%.

* The Sydney Sleeper cannot headshot, a serious handicap, but you can still charge your shots, like the original Sniper Rifle. A fully charged shot will be able to kill all of the lower health classes such as Spies, Scouts and Engineers, as well as Snipers who do not have Darwin's Danger Shield equipped.
+
* The Bazaar Bargain starts out with a 50% slower charge rate when scoped-in. A headshot kill caused by the Bazaar Bargain will increase the charge rate by 25%, maxing out at 200% of the normal charge rate. This is represented by a "Head" counter on the HUD, with one head equaling +25% charge. Six consecutive headshots are needed to achieve the maximum charge rate.

* The Jarate effect can be a huge help for your team against high health targets such as Heavies and Soldiers. With the Sydney Sleeper you won't be able to kill them outright if they are at full health, but you can weaken them and expose them to Mini-Crits from a distance so your other teammates can finish them off.
+
* This weapon rewards skilled Snipers the most, as one must obtain three headshot kills in a single life to begin receiving any benefit from it.

* The Sydney Sleeper is also a good choice for "no-scoping" snipers; simply hit a 50% charged shot to put the Jarate effect on your target, and every shot you connect with thereafter will automatically be a Mini-Crit regardless of whether you zoom in or not.
+
* For your first few heads, target classes that can be killed with an uncharged headshot (Scouts, Engineers, Medics, Snipers, Spies).

*Using the Sydney Sleeper on approaching enemies will work well if you have the the Bushwacka, as you'll likely be able to kill them in one hit if you've hit them with a fully charged shot.
+
* Beware of Soldiers with the Air Strike, Demomen with the Eyelander, Medics with the Vita-Saw, or other Snipers wielding the Bazaar Bargain; if they manage to kill you, your Head/Organ count will be added to theirs! But if you manage to kill them with a scoped headshot, their Head/Organ count will be added to yours! Demomen who have collected several heads gain glowing eyepatches, so target them to gain heads quickly.

*Jarate works as a great deterrent; shooting an enemy coming towards the front lines will make them think again about running into a fight, which will buy your team more time and possibly deter other enemies from proceeding into your sightlines.
+
* Prioritize surviving over trying to go on a sniping rampage, even if you have several heads. Your head counter will be lost upon your death.

*The Sydney Sleeper allows you to shoot Jarate from afar. Consider working with a Pyro though team chat to tag important targets such as Medics or Engineers and let the Pyro finish them off with their flamethrowers. Jarate and flames make a very devastating combination, allowing you and your cohort to kill important targets with no expense of haste.

*If a Medic combo is going into your base, apply the Jarate effect to the Patient by hiding in a corner in the direction they will come, and run. Your team mates can kill the threat faster and cost less time and casualties.
+
* The Machina deals 15% more damage and can pierce through multiple targets while scoped at full charge, but at the cost of generating considerably more noise per shot, being unable to fire un-scoped, and leaving a highly-distinctive team-colored tracer behind the shot.

Submachine Gun
+
* The Machina is best in long corridors and entryway sniping, where the Machina's piercing attribute allows it to hit multiple foes at once. The BLU team entrances on Payload maps, the tunnel and alleyway on Badwater Basin, and maps that funnel enemies down specific routes are where the Machina truly excels. The Machina can kill both a Heavy and his Medic behind him with a well-placed, fully-charged shot.

* The Submachine Gun (SMG) isn't the most effective in a one-on-one scenario, so try and use your Sniper Rifle to fire a no scoped shot into the body of your enemy, then quickly switch to the Submachine Gun to finish them off. It is important to make every shot with this weapon count, so aim carefully and keep your crosshair trained on the enemy rather than just spraying bullets wildly.

* The SMG is useful for spraying wide areas to reveal or draw out Spies who are trying to hide in the vicinity. Once you know a Spy is in the immediate area, fire bullets into likely hiding places and watch for the tell-tale blood splattering to show when you've hit.
+
* This weapon all but necessitates taking the SMG along with it. As the Machina cannot fire unless scoped, it is difficult to defend yourself in close-quarters combat. Though the weapon is still functional with other secondary weapons, you will be forced to rely on your melee weapon for dealing with enemies that manage to get close.

* While equipped along with the Huntsman, the SMG makes a good finisher weapon after bodyshotting an opponent.
+
* You can simulate unscoped shots by holding down primary fire and then pressing alt-fire to shoot.

* The SMG can be made into a deadly weapon if combined with a 50% (or more) charged shot from the Sydney Sleeper, as the SMG's bullets will do quite a bit of damage with Mini-Crits.
+
* This weapon's power for stealth trade can be countered by using it whilst roaming, so the tracer cannot be used by your opponents to locate you in any one position.

*Combining the SMG with the Tribalman's Shivs bleed effect can total up to a really fast kill. Hit them with the Tribalman's Shiv to make them bleed, back up to mid-range and start shooting away with the SMG. Having two constant sources of damage can quickly drain the health out of any class, success rate may vary, using this method on classes like Soldiers and Heavies is not a good idea and should only be used in the worst of circumstances.
+
* The Machina may succeed where other rifles fail; a Heavy with the Fists of Steel active can survive a fully charged headshot from the Sniper Rifle (450 − 40% = 270), but the Machina's extra damage will kill a Heavy under these conditions (518 − 40% = 311).

*Combining the SMG with the Sydney Sleeper may be a good idea. Seeing as Mini-Crits prevent damage falloff and makes sure that the weapon does 135% base damage, if you failed to kill someone with the first shot of your Sydney Sleeper but know that you might have brought him to near death, it is probably a better idea to whip out the SMG and fire at him. The Mini-Crits from the Sydney Sleeper will mean that the SMG will do around 11 damage at any range, so it will be a competent enough weapon to finish off any enemies that you didn't manage to kill with the Sleeper.

Razorback
+
* The Hitman's Heatmaker comes with a "Focus" meter that increases with each kill and assist; in this case, every kill fills the meter by 33%, and every assist fills by 11%. Upon filling the bar, The Sniper can press reload key (default key: R) to increases the Hitman's Heatmaker's charge rate by 25% and the player does not unscope, but the rifle temporarily fires tracer rounds. Additionally, the rifle is capped at 80% body-shot damage, limiting one-hit kills to headshots.

* Only use the Razorback if you know the enemy has Spies on their team and/or those Spies are actively impeding your sniping. The SMG is very advantageous in hunting down Spies in your area or taking down nearby weak enemies. The other secondary item, Jarate, is excellent for keeping already-discovered Spies visible to your team or making enemies easier to kill due to its Mini-Crit effects.

* Try to stay in the open with the Razorback and close to allies. If you're far off, it'll be easier for the Spy to realize that you have the Razorback equipped and effectively counterattack you with his Revolver or Ambassador. However, if you were to be in the open with your allies, the Spy might be seen and taken down before he has a chance to headshot you with the Ambassador or just kill you with the Revolver.
+
* Contrary to popular belief, the player can unscope while in focus mode, and even switch weapons. They simply remain scoped unless the player chooses to unscope.

* With the Razorback, you make an excellent 'rear guard' on maps with tight corridors or Payload maps. If you hang at the very back of the group, a Spy who would normally get quite a few backstabs from sneaking up behind will instead have to either alert you by breaking your shield, or try and go around you to get unshielded friendlies in-front of you. Either option is quite a bit more inconvenient than if you hadn't been there in the first place.
+
* Since the benefits of the rifle are limited to its focus mode, consider a different rifle if Spies frequently prowl your location.
+
** This weapon pairs well with the Razorback, as you are vulnerable to backstabs while still in scoped mode. Listen for the sound of your Razorback breaking so you can unscope and kill the Spy. However, you are still vulnerable to the Spy's Revolver, which may kill you before you have time to react.

* The only way to get a Razorback once it's been used is to get another one from a resupply cabinet. Remember to do this every time you have the chance to avoid getting backstabbed by another Spy.
+
* Though bodyshots cannot get one-hit kills, do not be discouraged from using them — if the enemy is under attack or not at full health, you still have a high chance of getting a kill or assist despite performing a less difficult shot.

* Even with the Razorback equipped the Sniper is still vulnerable to Spies, since the Sniper cannot see his immediate surroundings when zoomed in. 3 shots from a Revolver and 2 shots (including one headshot) from an Ambassador will kill a Sniper quickly; check for Spies periodically and stay alert for the Spy's decloaking sound to survive.
+
* This is a good weapon for a Sniper who likes to stay back from the front lines and avoid risks, in order to fill up his focus. Choose this weapon if you like to aim for headshots and want a bonus to charge rate, but don't wish to carry the Bazaar Bargain's initial charge rate penalty.

* The Razorback is a great pairing for the Sniper Rifle or the Sydney Sleeper since your peripheral is very limited. When using the Huntsman you'll usually be moving around more often, and you'll be able to see people coming near you.
+
* Activate your Focus when your target(s) moves unpredictably. This will help you line up your shot by staying zoomed in, and comes with the bonus of a faster charge rate for heavier targets. Make sure your back is against a wall if you can while doing this, as Spies will be even more of a threat.

* However, it is still a viable option to pair this with a Huntsman, as you will have the agility granted by the Huntsman, along with immunity to backstabs. This forces Spies to shoot you at your decreased movement speed when you are preparing a shot.
+
* This weapon is especially good for Mann vs Machine, due to its rapid-shot ability against multiple, or giant robots. Try to mix with damage boost upgrade to maximize its potential.

* Despite the Razorback generally not offering any secondary weapon abilities, it does allow you to more recklessly engage Spies in melee fights without fear of being backstabbed if they slip behind you.
+
* This Primary necessitates a mobile playstyle, as the tracer rounds gained through the use of Focus is sure to attract unwelcome guests to your sniping nest. This can be counteracted by predetermining multiple vantage points you wish to snipe from and rotating between them to keep opponents wondering where you are at any given time.

Darwin's Danger Shield
+
* The firing sound of this weapon is significantly softer than the other rifles thanks to its suppressor. This will make you more difficult to track in general, due to the loss of the distinct firing sound from a Sniper Rifle. It also means you can potentially infiltrate the enemy team's backlines and pick off high priority targets for a bit before being discovered.

* This shield raises your maximum health to 150 at the cost of losing your secondary weaponry. This allows the Sniper to be bolder in entering combat, as his survivability has increased. Consider using the Huntsman in conjunction with this to get in close(r) to the front. However, 150 is not a lot of health compared to some classes, so don't get too cocksure!

*The shield is a rather poor choice in conjunction with either of the Sniper rifles, as you often do not need the extra health when you're at the back lines, and the lack of a secondary weapon will force you to engage Spies in melee combat, a rather risky business.
+
Classic
**However, if you have your back to a wall, Spies will attempt to shoot you to death. The Danger Shield can save your life, for most Spies would use the Ambassador, and if you're lucky, you'll survive the usual headshot + follow-up shot, giving you a window of opportunity to strike.

*Despite its similiarity to the Razorback, you can still be backstabbed with the Danger Shield equipped. Do not hang around in Spy-friendly areas too much without backup.
+
* The Classic allows the player to charge their shot without having to zoom in, but the player still have decreased movement speed. It is only capable of getting headshots when fully charged, and deals 10% less damage on bodyshots. Unlike other rifles, the Classic is charged by holding down the fire key, and releasing to fire the shot. The Classic also allows the ability to fire multiple shots without leaving the scope.

Jarate
+
* The player can actually cancel a shot simply by switching weapons to secondary or melee, or by jumping while releasing the fire key.

* The Jarate's Mini-Crits do not stack with normal Crits. Which means you'll either score a Critical hit (ex: Headshots) or you'll get a Mini-Crit (Bodyshot).

* Try to throw it at a Spy as soon as you spot him so that he can't Cloak and escape. Jarate renders the Spy's Cloak near useless, lightly displaying his team color and showing dripping Jarate particles. If you suspect a Spy do not be afraid to use your Jarate to spycheck.
+
* Due to the damage penalty on bodyshots, try to aim for headshots as much as you can to maximize the effectiveness of this weapon.

* You can use it to extinguish a player in case they are desperately in need and there's no Medic or medkit around.
+
* Only hold down the fire key when you know an enemy is visible, or you'll be vulnerable with your decreased movement speed.
+
** Thus, timing is key with this weapon. Hold down the fire key and release only when an enemy is in your line of sight, or you'll end up wasting your shot.

* Be aware that Jarate cannot be thrown through friendly players. Try to avoid using it accidentally on a player who is not on fire. This tends to happen in tight areas and hallways, when you can't throw past the friendlies in front of you.
+
* Be aware that you cannot fire a charged shot in midair. Look out for classes with Juggling abilities.

* You can also throw Jarate near your feet to extinguish yourself.
+
* The Classic is a unique rifle in which it is possible to jump without unscoping or firing a shot. This means you have extra vertical maneuverability with this weapon, even while charging, although you are still limited by slowed movement speed or being unable to fire in the air.

* Using Jarate in combination with a friendly Pyro can be devastating due to the "tap" effects of a Pyro's Fire.
+
* Don't be too fooled by the damage penalty for bodyshots, as a fully-charged bodyshot is still capable of killing a non-Overhealed Scout, Spy, Engineer, and Sniper in one shot.

* The same goes for the Sniper's own Tribalman's Shiv or a Engineer's Southern Hospitality.
+
* It's recommend to use the ability to look around you while charging in case someone, especially Spies, try to kill you from behind your back or too close to the scope. Remember that you can still headshot even while unscoped, as long as the rifle is fully charged.
+
+
* Due to the Classic's unique ability to fire multiple shots while zoomed in, it'll be easier to pick off multiple targets in a short period of time with this weapon.

* Other than Pyros, Demomen and Soldiers can also make good Jarate buddies, since they have powerful area-of-effect attacks with a similar range to Jarate. This means they have a better chance of hitting the coated enemy and dealing more damage to them.
+
* You are at a disadvantage when facing other Snipers, since you cannot spend the time to charge a shot without being headshotted yourself. Use your abilities to move at full speed while scoped in and fire multiple shots without unscoping to your advantage.

*Sometimes you'll find yourself in the fray alongside a few members of your team. If you spot an allied Heavy walking into a group toss your Jarate. The spread of his bullets will put Mini-Crits into everyone in the area, successfully neutralizing the number of enemies arrayed against you and your new Heavy friend.
+
* Try some combos with any SMG, which could minimize the disadvantage of 10% less bodyshot damage.

* It is usually not a good idea to use the Jarate alongside The Sydney Sleeper, as both carry the same effect and offer only a minimal amount of extra utility together.
+
* Be aware that Classic leaves a bullet trail on shot. It isn't visible as the Machina or the Hitman's Heatmaker's focused shot, but sensitive players can still notice it easily.

*Using Jarate with the Bushwacka can be very effective by throwing the Jarate first and then striking the enemy with the Bushwacka for a guaranteed Crit.

Kukri
+
* The SMG is more suited for close combat than your rifle and has a much tighter spread than other similar sustained fire weapons like the Pistol or Minigun. This gives you a weapon with an excellent middle ground between a wide spread pattern or the pin-point accuracy of your Primary. Additionally, it can be used to finish off low-health enemies who you have just headshot.

* Two blows with the Kukri are enough to kill an unbuffed Spy, Scout, Engineer, or Sniper.

* In close quarters, such as many Sniper decks, the Kukri can quickly dispatch cornered enemies.
+
* It's important to make every shot with this weapon count, due to the low damage output. Aim carefully and keep your crosshair trained around the enemy's torso, rather than just spraying bullets wildly.

* Try to use the Kukri in close quarters instead of your Primary weapon or SMG. All melee weapons have an increased chance of Critical hits so you should have an easier time killing your enemy.
+
* This weapon is useful in rushing opponents due to the fast fire rate. With several bullets hitting their mark, you may pressure your opponents enough to convince them to flee from you instead of continuing to engage.

* Using the Kukri in addition to Jarate is an effective strategy for dealing with Spies as it makes it harder for them to get away.
+
* The SMG is a decent Spychecking tool and can be useful for spraying general areas such as around corners or raised platforms to reveal or draw out Spies who are trying to hide in the vicinity. Once you know a Spy is in the immediate area, fire bullets into likely hiding places and watch for blood splattering and Cloak flicker to show when you've hit a Spy.

Tribalman's Shiv
+
* The SMG is much more deadly if used when Mini-Crits or Critical Hits are in effect, due to its low damage and high accuracy. The Kritzkrieg in particular allows you to deal excellent damage, even at longer ranges.

* In many ways, the Shiv's Bleeding effect behaves much in the same way as the Pyro's afterburn. However, bleeding has the advantage of not being removed by being submerged in water, or extinguished with Jarate. Only resupply cabinets and health kits can stem the bleeding.

* Use your Jarate in combination with the Shiv for bleeding Mini-Crits. One hit on a 125 hp class will kill them with the bleeding if they are coated. Use this to wear down heavier classes quickly, supplementing the damage with your primary weapon if necessary,
+
* Combining the SMG with the Tribalman's Shiv's bleed effect can be incredibly effective. Hit them with the Tribalman's Shiv to make them bleed, back up to mid-range, and start firing with the SMG. Having two constant sources of damage can quickly drain the health out of any class, but the success rate may vary; using this method on classes such as Soldiers and Heavies is not a good idea and should only be used in the worst of circumstances.

* Overall, the Tribalman's Shiv causes more damage than the normal Kukri but over a longer duration.
+
* The SMG carries only three extra clips and runs out of ammo surprisingly quickly. Take heed of this and search for ammo packs regularly if you find yourself using this item often to defend yourself.

* Due to the post-damage, two hits with the Tribalman's Shiv on lighter classes (Scout, Spy, Sniper and Engineer) are enough to kill them by the bleeding, unless they find a way to heal themselves within 6 seconds.

* Cloaked Spies will be semi-visible when bleeding, due to a slight flicker of their Cloak and the blood effect.

* Spies using the Dead Ringer won't flicker from bleeding but will still leave the blood effect revealing their location.
+
* The Cleaner's Carbine is similar to the stock SMG, but has a CRIKEY bar which, after getting filled by dealing damage with the weapon and activated through secondary fire, gives the user a 100% rate of Mini-Crits for 8 seconds. However, it holds 20% less ammo in a clip, fires 25% slower, and grants no random crits.
* Due to the fact that bleeding doesnt stack, it may be a good idea to hit each opponent once when fighting multiple foes and then hit each one again instead of focusing on one first.

Bushwacka
+
* The Cleaner's Carbine allows a Sniper to be more aggressive when hunting down Spies or finishing off foes when in close quarters combat. The power of Mini-Crits and the fast firing speed of this weapon allow you to defend yourself more efficiently, especially against those who normally give you a hard time, such as Scouts or Demoknights.

*Because it turns Mini-Crits into Crits, it can be very effective when used in conjunction with Jarate.

*Jarate also works well to counter the Bushwacka's vulnerability to fire damage, as you can extinguish the flames easily and potentially coat the Pyro in Jarate.
+
* The Mini-Crits pass onto your other weapons, so if an enemy is out of the Cleaner's Carbine's effective range, switch to the rifle to get a quick, unscoped, mini-crit bodyshot. If an enemy is close by and you have to reload the Cleaner's Carbine, switch to your melee to get an easy kill. The Bushwacka, which deals critical hits whenever it would normally Mini-Crit, makes an excellent choice when paired with this weapon.

*If your enemies have the habit of closing in after being hit by the Sydney Sleeper, this is an excellent counter.
+
* The Carbine is a solid backup choice with the Huntsman. Combining the Mini-Crits with a fully charged bodyshot by the Huntsman will effectively kill any class with 150 health or lower.

*Unless the opposing team has an actively attacking Pyro, the Bushwacka should be used in place of the Kukri if you are not using the Tribalman's Shiv.
+
* While it may normally be difficult to smoke out disguised Spies with the SMG, the CRIKEY bar will fill when hitting disguised Spies, making it both an excellent Spy-checking tool and a strong way to finish them off before they can escape after being discovered.

*The Mini-Crit into Crit effect is active for any source of Mini-Crits (Buff Banner, enemy Crit-a-Cola, etc.)
+
* The Carbine is well-suited for situations where your need to defend yourself when in enemy territory. The CRIKEY bar is best saved for when the standard damage of the SMG is not effective enough to dissuade your attackers.

*Remember that the Bushwacka can still perform random Crits, in addition to its effect.
+
* The firing speed and ammo penalties might not seem like terribly punishing downsides, but may prove lethal to you in a fight. Therefore it is extra important that you hit all your shots.

*The Bushwacka is ideal for dispatching Spies who have activated the Dead Ringer. Coating them in Jarate and hitting them a few times will kill them quickly.
+
* CRIKEY charge can be gained from firing at enemies and buildings alike. Since buildings stand still, are repaired often, and are not subject to damage falloff, you can reliably charge the CRIKEY bar by attacking or destroying Sentry Guns, Dispensers, and Teleporters from afar.

*Even if you are preferring to stay behind the frontlines and provide support, be wary of your fire weakness. Pyros maybe easy pickings, but a stray flare can cause a lot of damage to you, making you easier to pick off for other enemies.

* The Jarate is similar to the Mad Milk; it is a thrown projectile that covers enemies in the substance, and nullifies the Cloak of enemy Spies and extinguishes teammates and yourself when on fire. Anyone who attacks a player covered in Jarate will deal Mini-Crit. Jarate has a recharge time of 20 seconds.

*In conjunction with a well-placed Jarate toss, the Bushwacka can easily dispatch most enemies; even distracted, overhealed Heavies.
+
* Jarate is thrown at a slight arc, which means it requires you to aim in a different way than most other projectiles. Leading your throw to a certain degree will cause the jar to be tossed more accurately and more likely to hit opponents further away.

The Croc-o-style Kit
+
* The Critical hits always prioritize over Mini-Crits from Jarate, meaning that every Jarated enemy you damage will always score either a Critical hit or a Mini-Crit.

*The main perk of this set, the immunity to death by headshots, is great when fighting predictable enemy Snipers. Upon being headshotted with a shot that would normally kill you, you will be left at 1 HP.

*Despite this tempting quality, bodyshots will do the same amount of damage as usual, are easier to execute, and unless you are overhealed, will kill you regardless of your 25 health buff (if fully charged).
+
* Try to throw it at a Spy as soon as you spot him so that he can't Cloak and escape. Jarate renders the Spy's Cloak useless, lightly displaying his team color and dripping yellow Jarate particles. If you suspect a Spy is in the vicinity, do not be afraid to use your Jarate to Spycheck.

*Also remember that you will be unable to kill heavier classes on your own unless you can successfully fire off two higher charged shots on them in quick succession, or cover them in Jarate and proceed to hit them with the Bushwacka.
+
* You can use Jarate to extinguish yourself and your allies if on fire. Throw it at the ground if you are on fire yourself. Extinguishing teammates will lessen the cooldown of Jarate by 20%, which rewards you for using it less conservatively.

*Snipers that see you have Ol' Snaggletooth equipped may assume you are using the full set, and take a split second to readjust their aim to your body. Don't give the chance, and kill them quickly!
+
* Be aware that Jarate cannot be thrown through friendly players that are further away from you and explode directly on teammates. Try to avoid having it hit a player who is not on fire that is in the way.

*If you are up against another Sniper with the Croc-o-style set, a good idea if you have the SMG would be to headshot them to bring them down to 1 health and then fire a volley of SMG shots at them.
+
* Pyros, Demomen, and Soldiers can make for good Jarate buddies, since they have powerful area-of-effect attacks with a similar range to Jarate. This means they have a better chance of hitting the coated enemy and dealing more damage to them.
**You can also still aim for quick bodyshots. A fully charged bodyshot is still normally enough to kill a Sniper with the Danger Darwin Shield equipped.
+
** Soldiers with any Banner are especially useful, as your Mini-Crits will charge their rage, so that they can grant further buffs.

*Croc-o-style Snipers are not immune to fully charged Huntsman headshots. You will survive uncharged headshots.
+
* Jarate is a good weapon for when you need to clear a point of enemies quickly. Throwing it at groups of enemies who are on a Cart or Control Point can help your team thin their numbers.
cleanup

Sniping Priorities
+
* Combine Jarate with the Bushwacka, which Crits whenever it can Mini-Crit, for reliable Critical hits.
Priorities vary and depend on the what is currently going on at the time. The following list should often, but not always, be used but if the shot is easy then you should take it. For example, if you have lots of teammates near a Medic with a Heavy, sometimes taking out the Heavy first is best since your teammates will be able to quickly control the area. If you shoot the Medic first the Heavy might hold it by himself long enough for reinforcements to arrive, but it will prevent them from using an ÜberCharge.

These four classes first:
+
* Keep in mind that Jarate does count as a projectile, so it can be airblasted by a Pyro back to you. Similarly, treat Jarate tosses like any other projectile against an experienced Pyro. Aim for the feet or take advantage of the Jarate's large splash radius to minimize the chance of them reflecting it back to you.
* Snipers

* Medics

* Heavies

* Engineers

The rest in no particular order.
+
* Remember that Jarate causes enemies to take Mini-Crits. If both teams are pushing in a chokepoint, use Jarate to change the tides of battle.
* Soldiers

* Demomen

* Pyros

* Scouts

* Spies

Snipers are on top of the list because they allow you to cross an open space freely, and also present the biggest threat to you as another Sniper. Medics are next because they are walking health packs. They can keep the enemy alive forever and they are even more important when they have an ÜberCharge saved. Heavies are tough enemies who can hold down points. Their high health makes them very difficult for your allies to take down. Engineers are very important because their Sentry Guns can eliminate your whole team. Once he's down, your teammates won't have to worry about the Sentry Gun being repaired. If you can, try to take out at least the Sentry Gun from the distance after you've eliminated the Engineer, to save your teammates some time.

+
* The Razorback gives the ability to passively block a single backstab attempt. It additionally will short circuit the Spy's Cloak and prevent him from switching weapons for 2 seconds. As a downside, it completely negates the Sniper's ability to be overhealed.

Soldiers can be dangerous if they take notice of your presence - they can strafe and fire rockets at your general direction to prevent a clean shot. Demomen are next because their sticky bombs can hold down an area really well. Once they die, their stickies will disappear which allows your team to move forward. Pyros and their awkward shaped heads make for easy kills. They can destroy your team in close combat so they must be taken down. Scouts move too fast and so you should rarely waste your time trying to get these guys. Spies are usually cloaked or disguised. If you see one, shoot it but most of the time they will be hard to find. Thus, you probably shouldn't worry about them, though if you spot one and don't see him die, call out his presence to your team, and watch your back. If you see them close to you, don't bother sniping them. Pull out your Melee weapon or SMG to take them down. Most of the time, if you get the jump on a Spy, you will kill him.
+
* Keep an ear out for the electrical breaking sound of your Razorback, as it means a Spy is right behind you. Try killing him with your melee weapon, but be quick, because if too much time passes, the Spy can kill (or weaken) you with his Revolver.

Map Specific
+
* Only use the Razorback if you know the enemy has Spies on their team and those Spies are actively impeding your sniping. The SMG is very advantageous in hunting down Spies in your area or taking down nearby weak enemies. The other secondary item, Jarate, is excellent for keeping already-discovered Spies visible to your team or making enemies easier to kill due to its Mini-Crit effects.

2Fort
+
* The Tribalman’s Shiv pairs very well with the Razorback as the bleeding effect can help to prevent the Spy from escaping via cloaking.

* Sniping from the ground floor in the dark areas near the base exits gives a relatively safe view of the upper tier.
+
* The peace-of-mind of being able to survive a backstab helps sniping on a psychological level, despite its many counters. This can be a benefit to certain new players or paranoid Snipers who get backstabbed too often.

* Shooting from the water can take out the opposition on the bridge or the far bank.
+
* If you are actively capturing Control Points or pushing the Cart, the Razorback will help protect you from chainstabs.

* Count how many Snipers the enemy has. This should be a good number to match with Snipers on your own team. No more, no less.
+
* Razorbacks respawn after thirty seconds once they are broken; the only way to get one faster is to visit a resupply locker, so once it's broken, you have to either watch your back for thirty seconds, or head back to spawn to get a new one.

* 2Fort is an excellent Sniper's map, but as the common strategy reads, you need to switch locations. An example would be to start on the supply room side of the Sniper deck. Put your back against the corner, this gives you a clear view of the opposing team's supply room side, and helps you resist Spies. The only way Spies can really get you is though shooting or stabbing your front side which, by the time you notice, you can heal up, then kill the Spy. After a few kills, it's best to move down to the lower side, any users that may switch to Sniper will expect you to be on the Sniper deck, going down on the lower deck can really give you the advantage. Going outside and to either corner is good because this gives you the top and bottom decks of whichever side you chose, and the bridge. If you chose the left corner, you can take out any foes on the right lower deck, but is rather difficult to get good aim. Finally, going back up on the Sniper deck and sniping though the windows is a good option. The enemy will fear using the bridge, and will most likely take the water, the windows on the Sniper deck give a good view of the water. Enemy Snipers might try and corner you with each Sniper at opposite ends, it's best to take them out one by one, but the Sniper deck windows gives you a clear vantage point for the attempted counter.
+
* If you are not in a well-defended location, the Razorback is not recommended. Experienced Ambassador Spies will kill you before you realize what hit you. However, it can also deter a Your Eternal Reward Spy due to forcing them to choose between killing you and losing a precious disguise or ignoring you and letting you continue picking off their team.

* Jarate is an excellent choice here. Even blind Jarate tosses can potentially coat an entire bridge push. It is also possible to hit across the bridge with Jarate from a jumping high arc throw from the battlements; this can be good if a just missed Spy that cloaked got away, and you have an approximation to his location, leaving him vulnerable to kills or forcing him to the water.
+
* The Razorback excels in Medieval Mode, as Spies will be limited to the use of their knives and disguise kits. This will dissuade them from attempting to backstab you, or even engaging with you at all.

* Scouts are also a problem for Snipers here, almost more so than a fellow Sniper. It's a common tactic for Scouts to rush your battlements by hopping from theirs and running the top of the bridge. Though, a quick, well timed shot at the zenith of their jump can knock them out of the sky or at worst off course and send them to the ground or water. If a Scout actually makes it across, it's for the better to fall back to a resupply and plan an ambush, or let someone better at close quarters handle the situation, however, you can make them rethink their decision by a quickly thrown Jarate, which will usually make a Scout turn tail.
+
* Just because you are immune to one backstab doesn't mean you can ignore your surroundings. If you know there is a Spy in the area, don't let him go so far as to remove your Razorback. Try Spy-checking or warning your teammates.

Granary
+
* If you have this shield equipped and are being shot, chances are a Spy is nearby and noticed your Razorback. Assuming you don't die, the best course of action is to run for safety, get health, and warn your teammates.
* Granary can be a difficult place for Snipers at times. Points 1 and 5 have long sight lines and several spots to shoot from. Most players will expect Snipers to attack from the window overlooking the right-side exit (when viewed from the last point), but this leaves Snipers vulnerable to any enemies that manage to make it up the catwalk or pipe, or worse yet, rocket-jumping Soldiers. The left-side exit (right for the attacker) is less expected as it is further from the point, yet still provides line of sight for most of the area, including a peek behind the defensive wall on the left. Remember that the struts for the pipe will block some of your line of sight in such a case.

* Defense on points 1 and 5 is far easier for a Sniper, with the back right corner behind the wall being a common spot to hide in, allowing occasional picks through the right side door. Other spots used can be on the left door just outside the defending team's spawn, or on the pipe in the middle of the area, though the most common is the previously mentioned right side.
+
* As most experienced Spies will simply switch to their Revolver instead of stabbing your shield, the Razorback is best used for offensive Snipers with the Huntsman or experienced ones "quick-scoping" with the Sniper Rifles, as it will prevent trickstabs.

* Points 2 and 4, and the areas between them and the central point, are troublesome for the Sniper. The area there is usually quite close and provides several advantages to the defenders of those areas. Snipers wishing to assault this area would be better served with the Huntsman than the Sniper Rifle. The same can be said of defending it. The lines of sight are short and the action around the point is hectic, giving the bow more advantages in this area over the rifle.

* The central point offers only a few options. While the ledges overlooking the point are an obvious perch, these are watched intensely for Snipers, not to mention in perfect line of sight for Soldiers and Demomen on the crates. The wall close at the Sniper's back allows explosive damage to splash onto him easily, and the lack of cover only compounds it. A somewhat less risky option is sniping from the entrances to the point, though this will usually only allow targeting a small portion of the other team.
+
* The Darwin's Danger Shield renders you immune to afterburn and halves the damage taken from fire.

* Due to the relative ease of travel for Spies on Granary, with numerous avenues of approach and escape, Snipers should take extra care to watch their backs. Try to avoid sniping without some (genuine) teammates nearby.
+
* When used with the Huntsman, you can get closer to the battlefield. You can now shoot arrows at close range without so much worry about Pyros disrupting you.

** Alternatively, pairing the Shahanshah with this shield and the Huntsman allows you to make a last stand when things get rough and you must escape.

* If defending the last cap as a Sniper, watch the window to Cap 2/4, the catwalk along the pipe, and the right-side entrance (from defense's view) carefully. The first is ideal for enemy Snipers and Soldiers to attack the defenders as they move to protect the point, the second is the fastest approach to the point, and the third is where the largest pushes (IE, Medic and Buddy combos) will usually emerge. As the height is with your opponents, be careful of headshots that may hit over the wall usually used as cover when defending the last point.
+
* The immunity to afterburn will render the Dragon's Fury a worse option for the Pyro, as the Dragon's Fury relies on enemies to be afflicted with Afterburn in order to output its bonus damage. However, when under direct flame damage, they can still gain increased damage on you, necessitating you keep your distance wherever possible.
+
** The fire damage resistance will also halve the damage from the fireball, resulting in prolonging against the Pyro more effectively.

Well
+
* This can give an advantage to Snipers that find themselves getting ambushed by enemy Pyros.
+
** This is especially useful for negating flare shots, which would otherwise result in flinching from fire damage that could considerably disrupt your aim.
+
** Negating afterburn can also deny enemy Pyros from obtaining critical hits from combos, such as the Flare Gun's crit-on-burning-players attribute.
+
** However, fighting against Pyro with Darwin's Danger Shield is not very effective. Utilize its fire damage resistance to instead run away from Pyro to the safety of teammates.

* Above your own Control Point 2 are some windows that give a great view to the building housing Control Point 3. Try hanging back from the window to squeeze in an unexpected shot on enemy Snipers.

* Crouching can enable you to take out Sentry Guns underneath the carriages.
+
* The Cozy Camper grants a 20% knockback resistance while scoped in and completely negates aim flinch while scoped in and fully charged. It will also heal the Sniper passively in a similar fashion to that of the Medic, or Soldier with the Concherer.

* If attacking the last point as a Sniper, remember that your line of sight is better on the higher approach, but this leaves you open to any enemies who can manage to flank you. Stay alert for enemies moving on the same level as you, as the trip up to the attic from the ground is usually a long one, and most will take the direct (i.e., straight across) route.
+
* The Cozy Camper is a good secondary if you often stick around one spot while sniping.
+
** The weapon is less effective if you snipe near the front lines. As a result, this is a poor choice with the Huntsman.
+
** If you snipe far away from the main action, or take advantage of your scope often, it can be helpful for rifles such as Hitman's Heatmaker.

* The small space at the front of the boxcars (the side touching the building) separating teams at Point 3 is often a preferred spot to snipe through before the match starts — thus, don't hug up against that wall or the gate unless you plan to counter-snipe.
+
* Be sure to take note of when you are actually taking damage; if you have a fully charged shot, you will no longer have an obvious visual indicator of the scope moving.
+
** With damaging effects that take place over time (such as afterburn and bleeding), you can fire at least one shot before needing to find a health source.
+
** Remember, Pyros firing at you with the Flare Gun or the Detonator can take you out in two or three direct hits.

* If sniping out the windows in the direction of Point 3, don't forget to check the water — enemies may sneak out of there while you're not looking, and that can end badly if they know you're up there.
+
* Although you suffer less knockback while scoped, you will still be forced to unscope while in the air and be subject to aerials.

Gravel Pit
+
* It is extremely easy to become complacent while aiming. Be aware of your surroundings lest someone takes you out at close range or with the occasional Kill taunt.

* Gravel Pit's long sight lines favor Snipers, and almost all approaches to the capture points are marked by areas that one or two Snipers can readily cover. As BLU, anticipate at least one RED Sniper with the team in each CP, and as RED, remember that BLU has several protected sniping areas that you do not.
+
* The Cozy Camper is not well-suited for Snipers who prefer quick shots and pop in and out of scope often. When using the Cozy Camper, do not be afraid to unscope to reposition for a better shot.

* When defending B, there are 5 entrances to B that you must be aware of when sniping. 2 coming from Blue spawn, 2 coming from C, and 1 connecting tunnel between A and B. If A hasn't been taken, then you don't have to worry about the C entrances very much if at all. The connecting tunnel entrance is positioned directly to the right of the right spawn exit, so watching both at the same time is relatively easy, yet somewhat inaccessible. The left exit, is a long tunnel that forces the blue players into a bottleneck, and with a large rock outside of it offering a defensive Sniper cover, it makes a good spot for sniping.
+
* The Cozy Camper can work well with the Sydney Sleeper due to its increased charge speed. This combination allows the Sniper to scope in, fire an unflinching quick charged shot, and move behind cover before he can be retaliated against.

*When defending A, there are 2 spawn entrances, the connecting tunnel, and only 1 entrance from C, again, if B hasn't been taken then the C entrances don't pose much threat. A is undoubtedly the harder point to snipe at There is no clear view into the bottlenecked spawn entrances, or any good cover. You can however see most of the whole side of the map from the building that houses the control point.
+
* The Cozy Camper can be detrimental when there are enemy Spies. The attributes of this weapon encourage the Sniper to stay scoped in, which gives Spies ample opportunity to backstab you while you are focused on maintaining your flinch immunity.

* When defending Point C, either side of the spawn point gives a good field of fire and relative protection from Spies due to the long run to reach it. You can also shoot into the side hallways from here. Also, the tower that houses the final control point gives relatively good cover, and allows you a good view of all 3 entrances into C.

*When on Blue, you're somewhat limited in what you can do. Blue is bottlenecked very badly when exiting spawn into both A and B. However, once out of the bottleneck, if your team has taken some ground at either point you can Sniper enemies coming to fight off your teammates with more ease. Also, after taking A and B. Enemies on the tower at C are vulnerable to Sniper fire. C is where you'll be able to do more damage.
+
* Two blows with the Kukri are enough to kill non-Overhealed Spies, Scouts, Engineers, or Snipers. Three blows will kill a Demoman, Medic or Pyro, and four will kill a Soldier.

* Look for alternate attack routes, especially on Point C. It is possible to snipe distracted defenders from multiple angles and sneak away quickly to another one before they can react.
+
* Of all the melee weapons you possess, the Kukri is your greatest tool for close-quarters combat if you are in a pinch. Its larger burst damage than the Shahanshah or Tribalman's Shiv, and the lack of damage vulnerability like the Bushwacka can give you an easier time killing your enemy in the case of an ambush from Scouts or Spies.

Dustbowl
+
* Despite the versatility of your melee weapon, you are still very vulnerable in up-close dueling. It may be in your best interest to retreat, instead of chasing after your opponent to secure a kill, as that increases your chances of meeting up with a class you can't effectively fight against.

* When attacking Stage 1 Cap 1, go by the side shed and snipe from there. Most defenders will be hanging by the main shed; try to pick them off so the attacking players can hit the defenders hard on the main pathway. Run along the side shed pathway and try to take down any defenders teleporting to the front lines or any Engineers and their buildings.

+
* The Tribalman's Shiv trades 50% of the melee damage for the ability to deal bleed damage over time for 6 seconds. The total bleed damage is up to 48 (8 per second, up to 6 seconds), which combined with the 33 melee damage sums to 81 damage.
+
**If it mini-crits, the mini-crit melee attack becomes 44, and the total bleed damage becomes 60 (10 per second); it deals 104 damage in total if all bleed is inflicted.

* When attacking Stage 1 Cap 1, you can also hold down a sniping spot just left of the side shed. This is a key, yet uncommon sniping point as it gives you views to the two tunnel exits, and the one above. If a battle is going on inside the main shed, and your team has limited the enemy team to the main shed, this spot is safe. The trick is to wait for any unaware enemies to come through either tunnel exits, and as always, keep your dot hidden, and you'll have your enemy running straight into bullets. This gives the rest of your team enough time to capture the point. The disadvantage is that a Spy can easily hug the canyon wall, and backstab you, and if you've been successful at this point, many enemy users will switch to Spy. As a counter to any Spy that may kill you, the side shed contains health and ammo kits, so whenever things get uneasy, fire off a clip from your SMG, then grab an ammo kit.
+
* In many ways, the Bleeding effect of the Tribalman's Shiv behaves much in the same way as the Pyro's afterburn. However, bleeding has the advantage of not being removed by being submerged in water, or extinguished with Jarate. Only resupply cabinets and health kits can stop the bleeding effect.

* When defending Stage 1 Cap 1, a good Sniper spot is the flat platform by the windows of the Capture Point A building. Snipe from here to cover the main shed, the canyon, and the side shed. If there's a Sentry Gun up in the corner of the stairs in the building, it will prevent Spies from backstabbing you. However, be sure to listen to the Engineer. If you hear that it's being sapped, pull out your Kukri or Tribalman's Shiv and assist the Engineer by killing the Spy.
+
* Use your Jarate in combination with the Shiv for bleeding Mini-Crits. Using this combination results in almost a one-hit kill on 125 HP classes such as the Scout, Spy, Sniper, and Engineer. This combination is also useful when wearing down heavier classes; if needed, supplement this damage with your primary weapon.
+
** You can pair this weapon with the Sydney Sleeper as a last resort if your charged shot is unable to kill a class in one hit. Since the bleeding lingers, you may be able to finish off an opponent with the Mini-Crits even if you end up dying.

* When attacking Stage 1 Cap 2, use the platform with the tires to Snipe the defenders. Concentrate on taking down enemy Snipers from here, if there are any. To get a good vantage point on the Capture Point, cross the bridge after leaving the grating and snipe from the platform with the three stacked boxes.
+
* Overall, the Tribalman's Shiv causes more damage than the Kukri, but over a longer duration.

* When defending Stage 1 Cap 2, look for a stack of tires back in a corner between the control point and the traditional Sniper platform above spawn. Jumping behind these tires gives you an excellent vantage point on almost all the entrances to the area, will keep most of your body protected, and nullifies Spy backstabs (though the occasional side-stab may happen, you're also nearby where Sentry Guns are normally placed, so Spies will probably go for them first, unless he is gunning for you in particular).
+
* Due to the post-damage, two hits with the Tribalman's Shiv on lighter classes (Scout, Spy, Sniper, and Engineer) should be enough to kill them by the bleeding, unless they find a way to heal themselves within 6 seconds.<!--2 hit + total bleed = 114, doesn't fully kill them-->
+
** To ensure you kill a lighter class quickly, you can make a quick bodyshot with your rifle of choice before leaving.

* When defending Stage 2 Cap 1, staying back by the office is a good idea. This gives a good view of the front lines. There's a large ammo pack and medium medkit in the building, and outside by a sign, there is a large medkit. There are also some barrels in the corner that give quick access to the point for defense with your Melee weapon. You're a sitting duck for Spies there though, and being indoors, nobody will see you get backstabbed and kill the Spy before he can do more damage.
+
* Cloaked Spies will be semi-visible when bleeding, due to a slight flicker of their Cloak and the blood effect.

* When attacking Stage 3 cap 2, enter the long hallway that contains a medium medkit. It will give you an excellent vantage point on the enemy.
+
* Spies using the Dead Ringer won't flicker from bleeding, but will still leave the blood effect, revealing their location.

Hydro
+
* Due to the fact that bleeding does not stack when hit the same target with the Tribalman's Shiv multiple times, it may be a good idea to hit each opponent once when fighting multiple foes, and then hit each one again instead of focusing on one first.
* With its many configurations, Hydro is a very good Sniper map.

* Sit at the back of your area and scope to the entrances. Most of the good spots are near spawn points.
+
* Pairing the Tribalman's Shiv with the SMG or the Cleaner's Carbine can increase damage on the victim with the bleeding supplemented by the hitscan bullets.

* On offense, a Sniper can sit in the entrances to the enemy areas and take down Sentry Guns with fully charged shots.
+
* This weapon is built for avoiding or escaping direct combat. Using a strategy that requires you to be on the front lines (such as with the Huntsman) is often not very effective.

* Try to find the more unusual and hard to reach areas to avoid Spies. After taking down enemy Snipers, change positions.
+
* A Critical hit against an enemy with moderate health can be devastating. If you score a Crit against an enemy, you can take the chance to run away and the bleeding will probably finish them off.

* Any attack with the Bushwacka that would be a Mini-Crit will become a full Crit. However, the Bushwacka is unable to get random Critical hits and the Sniper will take 20% more damage while the Bushwacka is active.

* Watchtower has very little cover for enemies heading towards the middle, and the pipes are fairly small, not giving them much room to maneuver. This makes enemies very predictable and much easier to headshot.
+
* This weapon can be very effective when used in conjunction with the Jarate and the Cleaner's Carbine, due to its ability to turn Mini-Crits into full Crits.

* A great spot in Watchtower is just to the right of the spawn area, where you can just see over the wooden fence, you can easily see enemies approaching the tower from the enemy spawn, giving you the ability to take out enemies within seconds of the round starting. Medics are the easiest to take down, as you can see their healing beam before you see them if they are healing someone.
+
* If your enemies have the habit of closing in after being hit by the Sydney Sleeper, this is an excellent counter.

* If an enemy Sniper is using the spot above, simply move to a similar area to the left, and shoot them the second you see them. They probably will not see you as they would be focused on the pipe your team will be crossing. If you are fast enough you can take them out before they kill any of your teammates.
+
* The Mini-Crit into Crit effect is applicable to any source of Mini-Crits (Buff Banner, marked for death, etc).

* You can watch the control point in the tower by standing on one of the high pipes near the cliff, you should only remain there if all the remaining enemies are inside the tower. You will have to shoot out the windows before you are able to shoot them, which will tip them off and force them to duck to stay out of the way, making it easier for your teammates to catch them off guard.
+
* The Bushwacka is ideal for dispatching Spies who have activated the Dead Ringer. Coating them in Jarate and hitting them a few times will kill them quickly.

* If you are the last one alive and there is one enemy left in the tower, a good strategy is to shoot out one of the windows and, if you have it, throw a jar of Jarate inside and cover them with it. At this point they will be watching the direction you threw it from. Jump down from the pipe down to the staircase and make your way up behind them and finish them with your Melee weapon, they shouldn't see you coming.
+
* In conjunction with a well-placed Jarate toss, the Bushwacka can easily dispatch most enemies; even distracted, overhealed Heavies.

Badwater Basin
+
* Be wary about when you pull out this weapon, due to the increased damage you take when it is active. Only wield it if you are sure that a melee kill is imminent.

* Badwater Basin is good map for Snipers as each of its points has good lines of sight from either side, but also has limited areas to snipe from due to its initial linearity. As such, you may be competing with friendly Snipers for the prime spots, so try to mix things up a little, and snipe closer to the front lines than the enemy would expect you to.

* The BLU Spawn is an obvious sniping spot when attacking the first area due to its darkness and being a no-go zone for Spies, but be wary of enemy Snipers positioned at the very top of the hill next to, behind and on the rock formations at the top of the hill. Conversely, the rock is a great spot for defending Snipers, as you can pick off enemies as they leave spawn or try to take pot shots up the hill (though it is worth being aware of your blind spot, in case you have no teammates standing guard or enemy Spies jumping up to stab you).
+
* The Shahanshah does 25% less damage when the Sniper is at or above 50% health, but does 25% more damage when he is below 50% health.

* The tunnel that the cart goes through for most of the first area is a good sniping spot for both teams also as it provides a very long line of sight down the otherwise most covered part of the area, allowing you to pick off enemies as they proceed through to push/stop the cart.
+
* The Shahanshah is good for fighting Spies. Spies fight at close range, so you'll probably take enough damage to make you a force to be reckoned with.

* The second area of the map is another Sniper-friendly one, with narrow but key sightlines coming from the top of the hill where the rocks are all the way to just next to RED's forward spawn/shortcut. On attack, this view can be used to effectively lock down the area that spans the back of the second point by preventing them from running over to the stairs/roof building directly, and forcing them to take Teleporters or try tricky jumps to evade being headshot. On RED, you can aim up to the rocks where the BLU Snipers may be with ease, but it is worth noting that they may already be stationed there and ready to headshot you as soon as you poke your head out to survey the area. However, this is nevertheless a good spot, as it lets you pick off just-spawned enemies as they go over the hill, and also effectively cover the cart (which should be in such a range that you can easily deter/assist in killing any cart pushers with Jarate).
+
* The Shahanshah is best used in combination with the Razorback. The Razorback will encourage Spies to use their Revolver instead of their knife. Being hit with a Revolver will easily bring you under the 50% health requirement and improve your ability to fight Spies even further.

* Attackers can also take advantage of the building found at the very back of the courtyard behind the second point, by sniping enemies on the roof/coming up the stairs from the ground floors (especially effective when the defenders still consider it a 'safe' zone and position their Medics or Engineer buildings on the back of the roof). However, being such a far off spot with covered routes to it, it becomes easy for Spies and Scouts to quickly make their way up to you and take you out if you are alone (it is also subject to Soldiers and Demomen as they can rocket/sticky jump on to the sniping balcony from the roof with little effort).
+
* The Shahanshah is less effective for ambushing enemies, should the situation arise. For example, if you are the only one around and it becomes necessary to stop a capture, you may need to ambush, which is less effective with this weapon.

* A BLU Sniper can also elect to jump onto the rock outcroppings in the courtyard, and have clearer sightlines to Engineers who would otherwise be behind cover if you were to snipe from the building. However, you yourself will be exposed and will have to escape quickly if you are detected by the RED team.
+
* The Shahanshah can be very powerful when used in tandem with Jarate or the Cleaner's Carbine. The combined damage of being below the 50% threshold and Mini-Crits will make you a forced to be reckoned with, and allow you to fight back against Spies, Scouts and Pyros more effectively.

* The roof at the second point can be used by BLU Snipers when the cart is being pushed from the second to the third points, but it only covers 2/3 of the distance to the third point, and also is in the main line of sight of Snipers aiming up from the dip the cart goes down the ramp into. It can however be safely used for sniping enemies going in and out of the house above the dip, as you can snipe both enemies coming and going via the back entrance as well as going up the stairs from the near side. It is for this reason that it is not advisable to snipe from said house on the defending team when aiming at rooftop enemies, as it is a blind chokepoint and so subject to a lot of Grenade Launcher and other spam.
+
* Although you deal extra damage when below half health, try not to always take advantage of the bonus. After all, your reduced health means enemies can very well kill you with no difficulty.

* Attacking Snipers can snipe up at the third point from the dip near where the full health and ammo packs are, and have a good wall to hide behind, but are in risk because the spot is just within a Heavy's effective Minigun range as well as grenade range, meaning it will be difficult to get a clear shot. You can also go through the newly opened left corridor to get a better view of the third point, but it is in the prime sightlines of RED Snipers due to being such an effective spot and is also a chokepoint for long range rockets and grenades, most likely coming from the building on the left (which may have a Sentry Gun on its balcony, rendering this area almost inaccessible).

* On the defending team RED Snipers can aim out of the windows in the buildings overlooking the point, as they provide great coverage and are dark and brown enough to help you blend in with them slightly, throwing the aim of enemy Snipers slightly. The middle window is the most effective, as it allows you to see all of the cart's route from the dip onwards, and it protects you from Snipers hiding in the far right buildings. However, the window is low enough to arc grenades and Stickybomb Launcher into easily, and it is secluded enough that a Spy can backstab you without any teammates around you noticing. Alternatively, the concrete pipes slightly past the third point can be used as a safer sniping point, but compromises your vision in return.

** It takes about 0.7s for the Sniper to stun an enemy after activating the taunt. During the process of taunting, he will say "Stab, stab, stab!". The first "Stab!" word occurs before he stuns the target within thrusting range.
+
* You can stun (but not kill) ÜberCharged enemies with the Arrow Stab, causing them to waste precious seconds.
+
* You don't need to touch the enemy with the initial thrust to get the kill; the enemy merely must be in melee range when the arrow is yanked back.
+
* On the other hand, it is possible to stun the enemy with the initial thrust but not kill them with the retraction. The taunt is sufficiently fast that you should be able to taunt again before the first thrust's stun wears off.
+
* Being such a fast taunt, you can use it to kill distracted enemies or enemies that you suspect are charging towards your position, perhaps around tight corners.

* BLU Snipers at the last point can snipe from the concrete pipes next to the third point to target any Snipers or players coming out of the upper left spawn exit (from the attackers' view), and can also crouch to safeguard yourself against other Snipers temporarily. You can also snipe directly from the top of the last ramp the cart goes down, but it is a large risk as it is a commonly stickied area, and is also the edge of a safe zone for enemy Spies (them being able to stab you and directly run down the ramp to safety). Alternatively, the window in the top tower can be used, as can the windows in the right buildings nearer the upper enemy spawn, but these are both in the enemy Sniper's view from either of their spawns.

* Snipers defending the last point can do so from the relative safety of their upper spawn doors, as they can easily aim and hide from enemies by retreating into spawn, but run the risk of being backstabbed if they stay still for too long. If the cart has already been pushed to the bottom of the ramp and enemies are pushing, picking the upper left spawn is probably the best as you can see the prime sniping BLU sniping spots instantly, and can effectively fire down on the cart area with relative ease (and if worst comes to worst, it's within range to throw some Jarate, jump down and attempt a last stand with the Kukri or Tribalman's Shiv).
+
A default mixed Sniper loadout, for Snipers that are confident enough against Spies without need for the Razorback. The Sniper Rifle, which is a trademark of this set, can easily deal consistent high damage if the user is skilled with good aim and concentration. If you are being hassled by enemies from close range but are not good at aiming from such a range, switch to your secondary or melee weapon to compensate for this. If you are good with aiming at close range, you can quickly scope in for 150-damage headshots.

+
For veterans that are used to playing Snipers on QWTF or TFC, the Classic may offer a better alternative to the stock Sniper Rifle, as the Classic functions identically to the Sniper Rifles from those games, which allow the player to charge shots without zooming in and can fire the next shot without unscoping. However, also like the old rifles, it cannot headshot until fully charged.

Gorge
+
The Submachine Gun, with its high firing rate and sizeable clip, can also deal with close-ranged offenders or can wound enemies from mid-range for other teammates to finish off later. The Kukri deals consistently high damage against enemies in melee range, with all classes other than the Heavy and the Soldier going down in three hits or less. If you find yourself at low health often in melee situations, the Shahanshah's damage bonus will help you kill enemies quicker, allowing you to two-hit Medics and three-hit Soldiers.

* Gorge is a good map for Snipers as it has very open sightlines for both sides and also a large aount of cover (such as over hills or behind props and corners) to hide from incoming fire/other Snipers. Most of these sightlines work both ways, so both teams can use them (though some are more efficient for one team than they are for the other).

* On attack, sniping the first area is somewhat difficult as all the spawn exits will be watched periodically by enemy players, though not necessarily all at the same time. For example, the far left door may go unnoticed while the far right or middle doors may be the targets of a lot of projectile spam. When scoping out of whichever exit you choose, be sure to look for enemy Snipers first and take them out as necessary (particularly if they are looking the other way).
+
For a more defensive, long-range Sniper who spends a lot of time being scoped in. Since the Bazaar Bargain is utilized to its fullest when it does scoped headshots to increase the charging rate, the Machina can only shoot while scoped, and the Hitman's Heatmaker allows you to fire without unscoping, all of these guns work well for such a playstyle. The Razorback helps defend you from Spies; if there are none, or you feel comfortable against them without it, the Cozy Camper's flinch and knockback resistance will confer greater benefits. The Tribalman's Shiv deals less immediate damage, but its bleed effect is likely to drive off enemies. This is important, as this setup fares poorly at close range.

* Support any charges out of the spawn with Jarate if you have it, as it will help in disorienting and weakening any enemies who are otherwise locking down your spawn doors. If you hang back you may also see enemy Spies run in from their hiding spots, so keep any eye out for them and try to kill them or warn your team of them quickly.

* If you are using the Huntsman, try to fire arrows out of different doors at different times to distract the enemy as to where you're going to be next. That said, be careful of enemy Rifle Snipers as they can kill you and evade your arrows even if you aim directly at them.
+
For a more offensive medium-ranged Sniper. The Huntsman provides higher and faster damage output at a closer range, while the Classic allows you to keep your eyes on the battlefield to watch for danger. Your SMG acts as a secondary defense when under attack at close quarters or as a finisher for weakened enemies. The Submachine Gun deals more reliable damage, while the Cleaner's Carbine can give temporary mini-crits with any weapon, boosting your firepower. The Kukri is a reliable backup that can take out a weak close-by threat in few swings to avoid further conflict; alternatively, the Shahanshah deals more damage in the low-health scenarios you will likely find yourself in, while the Tribalman's Shiv's bleeding ability allows you to reveal cloaked Spies and is devastating when followed up with an SMG. However, this combination lacks the power that conventional Sniper rifles provide at long range.

* When defending the first area, try to spend your time throwing Jarate at the enemy spawn entrances to deter or hinder their pushes, chase up any possible Spies you see and snipe the doors furthest away from you (for instance, standing in the right windows to attack the far left BLU spawn door). This will let you deal with any Snipers trying to take you down and also eliminate any threats that your team mates may be too far away from to deal with (like a spun up advancing Heavy or a charging Medic).

* The areas either side of the first point are good for Snipers on both teams as they allow them to look over the central bridge where the point is located AND look to the other side to take out enemy Snipers. However, these places are also mostly out in the open with only a few pieces of cover, so try to mix up the places where you snipe from a little.
+
An ideal setup in Medieval Mode. The Huntsman is the fastest-firing and most powerful ranged weapon in Medieval Mode, as well as your only primary option in such. The Cozy Camper's health regeneration is the only consistently meaningful upside of your allowed secondaries. The Kukri gives reliable close-range damage and, unlike your other melee options, isn't limited by the nature of the mode or the rest of the loadout. The Cozy Camper's lack of flinch with fully charged arrows will make it easier to land hits from far away, such as the last point of DeGroot Keep.

* When on offense, sniping from the left side will allow you to cover the very far left, middle, right garage door and right ledges on the defenders' side. This is good for taking out Snipers trying to hide in the garage, and you can crouch to hide behind the crest of the hill. However, the open area behind the hill and the various alcoves make it an easy place for Spies to uncloak and stab/shoot you. The right side compensates for this by being easily seen and cramped (so Spies will have a hard time remaining stealthy) but conversely this works against you by making you stand out and giving you limited escape routes.
+
While it may not directly help you in battle, the Razorback is another great choice. Since the Medieval Mode is heavily melee-centered, Spies are a common threat. The Razorback will protect you from backstabs, allowing you to quickly turn around and shoot an arrow at the backstabber. Indirectly, having the Razorback equipped may cause enemy Spies to completely ignore you, and instead focus on other members of your team.

* On attack, you can also snipe through the windows next to the bridge. Be careful of Spies and Scouts though, as they can both easily access them and hide in the shadows to surprise you should you stand still for too long.

* Defending Snipers can hide in the garage door on the left to keep themselves out of sight, behind the crates next to the point, in the windows on the right and at the back of the far right area behind the concrete blocks. All these areas will hide you briefly and give you more of a window to shoot other Snipers, as well as anybody who enters your sightlines. Unfortunately, some of these areas are popular for [Sentry Gun|Sentry] placement, so be careful and choose an unoccupied spot that won't have any other players to draw attention to you.
+
This loadout is great for mid-range Snipers who want to support their team and/or take advantage of mini-crits. Sydney Sleeper's ability is similar to Jarate, but you don't have to be near the target to use it. Jarate is perfect when you want to extinguish your teammates or yourself, reveal Spies, fight against a close-range enemy, or weaken a group of enemies so your teammates can take them out. Alternatively, you can douse a close-range enemy with the Sydney Sleeper and then tear them to shreds with an SMG. With its mini-crits upgrading the Bushwacka due to it dealing critical hits when it would have dealt mini-crits allows it to deal insane damage on Jarate'd enemies or in general while the Cleaner's Carbine has Crikey active. Alternatively, the Tribalman's Shiv helps with Spy-checking while your Jarate recharges, or if you're using an SMG and mini-crits from Jarate or Crikey will apply to its bleed damage. Additionally, the Shiv's bleed will help drive off unwanted close-range enemies if you lack an SMG for self-defense.

* If you are using the Huntsman or Jarate, fire arrows/throw it on the point when the BLU team has made their charge. With the amount of people on the point, you're highly likely to hit and possibly kill someone with any arrows you fire, and saturate everyone on the point thanks to Jarate's large radius.

* The rooms and corridors between the first and last points are where the Huntsman shines, as they range from a small to medium length and more often than not heavier classes such as Soldiers and Heavies will move in predictable lines due to the limited space, making aiming a lot easier.
+
This defensive Sniper setup focuses on attaining high killstreaks. An SMG works well in place of unscoped shots at mid-range or the Shahanshah at high health, as well as a follow-up to a single hit with the Tribalman's Shiv. When fully charged, the Machina's increased damage bonus can take out multiple classes with one or two bodyshots. Substituting the Bazaar Bargain in for the Machina gives you substantial rewards for racking up kills, albeit less help in getting them. The rounds can penetrate and severely damage multiple enemies with one shot. The Submachine Gun or the Cleaner's Carbine can deal with nearby Spies and weaken enemies. Dealing enough damage with the Cleaner's Carbine will allow you to activate Crikey mode and go on a mini-crit-boosted killing spree. This will greatly increase the deadliness of the Machina's firepower, as well as your melee weapon, making you a deadly adversary to your enemies.

* The walkways on the upper floors are also good for Huntsman Snipers as it becomes impossible for enemies to move out of the way at close quarters without falling off. Alternatively if you've run out of arrows, use the Kukri or Tribalman's Shiv in combination with Jarate to deal lasting damage if you or your team doesn't finish the enemy off.

* The last point is difficult to attack as a Sniper as it has a very limited selection of places to snipe safely from, only offering the main door (which has crates but these are very easy to reach as a Spy or Scout), the upper walkways (which Soldiers and Demomen can jump up to) and the left corridor (that will always have people running through, attracting attention to your sniping). As such, keep changing your location as much as possible and try to stay out of the areas where you know enemy Snipers will be aiming (such as to the right side of the main doorway to the point).
+
This setup is built around the Focus ability of the Hitman's Heatmaker, and as such revolves around earning fast kills and assists. Jarate works well to weaken enemies, making them easy for teammates to kill and allowing you to rake up easy assists, or as a defensive measure against ambushes, giving you better odds of survival when under direct attack from enemies such as Spies. Alternatively, the Cleaner's Carbine can be used at close range as a defensive weapon; it is effective against Scouts and Spies, who may try to ambush you at close range. The mini-crits provided by the Carbine can be used to earn even more kills. Additionally, it is possible to fire the Carbine into a group of enemies under attack by your teammates at medium to long distances and possibly earn a few easy assists. The Tribalman's Shiv's ability to inflict bleed makes it invaluable for earning assists in situations where melee combat is necessary, while the Bushwacka's ability to inflict critical hits in place of mini-crits can allow for easy kills on Jarate'd enemies or while Crikey is active.

* Like with the previous point, on RED you can easily snipe on either side at the opposite side and maintain a safe spot, jumping down to the actual point as necessary to get health ammo. In the event of the BLU team pushing in, once again be sure to throw Jarate and use your Huntsman/Kukri/Shiv to deal damage, also buying time for your team to jump down by stopping the cap and possibly stopping the BLU team's impending victory.

Junction
+
Cooperative Class Strategies
*Using the rifle on Junction is fairly ineffective, as there are few areas where the distance between you and your target will be longer than the Huntsman can manage. As such, using the Huntsman is recommended as it can be used effectively in nearly any part of the map (its fire-and-forget playstyle is also useful when trying to lay down suppressing fire through chokepoints).
+
Scout
+
Cooperating with a Scout is a bit unorthodox due to your completely different fighting styles. Despite this, there is still some chemistry to be found with a friendly Scout.
+
* If a Scout is using the Fan O'War, your Bushwacka will score critical hits on an enemy marked for death.
+
* You provide a great distraction for the Scout. If enemies are reluctant to cross open areas because of you, they will begin using alternate routes to attack, which allows the Scout to more easily ambush them.
+
* If an enemy Engineer is using the Gunslinger, destroying his mini-Sentry Guns from a distance with your Sniper Rifle can help a Scout tremendously.
+
* The combination of Jarate with the bleeding effect of a Scout's Boston Basher, Three-Rune Blade, Wrap Assassin, or Flying Guillotine can quickly kill weaker classes and severely weaken bulkier ones.
+
* When using the Huntsman, you will generally fight closer to the frontlines. A Scout can provide a good distraction, giving you more time to pick your targets.
+
* Regardless of the above tactics, a Scout will generally be too far away for you to help him much due to the different natures of your classes; a Scout is helpless at long range, while a Sniper is worst at close range. Unless you are sure that you can fight in the frontlines, it's best to find another class to team up with instead.

*Jarate is usually the best option for this map on either team, as the tight space means you'll often splash multiple enemies and Spies will have little space to dodge in once you have soaked them. However, be careful of your teammates when throwing Jarate, as the corridors may cause the jar to break on them and not your enemies if used in an enclosed area.
+
Soldier
+
The Soldier is a bulky class that can provide excellent protection for you and is a great distraction. While there is not much direct help you can do for him, there are some situational advantages you should keep in mind.
+
* The Soldier's overwhelming power and presence in a battle means he, like the Heavy, will be the center of attention in most circumstances. Using this knowledge, you can start inconspicuously eliminating classes in the backlines such as Medics, other Snipers and Heavies.
+
* Due to the Rocket Launcher's large splash radius and high damage, Soldiers are excellent at protecting Snipers from the threats of Scouts and Spies before they can even approach.
+
* Use Jarate when working with a Soldier, the Mini-Crits rewarded makes the Soldier's own explosive damage even more effective.
+
** Furthermore, extinguishing a Soldier who is on fire doesn't have to retreat for health as early, which strengthens your team's next push.
+
* Enemy Pyros can prevent a Soldier from doing maximum damage due to their airblast. Take them out to allow the Soldier more liberal use of his Rocket Launcher.
+
** If both your Soldier and you are constantly harassed by Pyros, consider equipping the Darwin's Danger Shield and seeking protection from a different class, such as an Engineer or Heavy.
+
* Just like you, the Soldier is quite effective at suppressing fire from enemy Snipers at long range. He can fire rockets at common Sniper spots, distracting them enough to allow you to finish them off, or by outright killing them.
+
* Soldiers who use the B.A.S.E. Jumper are sitting ducks for any class with accurate hitscan, or straightforward projectiles. As such, sniping those who attempt to target the parachuting Soldier will allow him to traverse the skies more safely and cause destruction from unexpected angles.
+
* A Soldier using the Battalion's Backup, when activated, can make it much easier for you to take out an enemy Sniper, as you will be immune to Critical hits, making it impossible for him to headshot you.
+
* Enemy Snipers can be a detriment to an actively jumping Soldier. As you are one of the most effective counters to other Snipers, killing them will make a Soldier's life much easier.
+
* The Huntsman changes the Sniper's playstyle similarly to that of the Soldier's, allowing you to coordinate in the same locations and with similar strategies for maximum damage potential.
+
** For instance, a fully charged Huntsman headshot combined with a close-range rocket will kill even a fully overhealed Heavy.

Attack
+
Pyro
*At points A and B, use the Huntsman to take quick shots out of the spawn doors before retreating back in to evade any projectile spam from outside. If you feel you can act fast enough, use the Rifle to increase the likelihood of your shots hitting.
+
A Pyro can eliminate the risk of getting backstabbed due to their excellent Spy-checking ability, allowing you to snipe without having to constantly watch your back. Additionally, your inherent role of priority elimination allows you to keep your Pyro around by killing the classes that want them dead the most.
+
* As with the Scout, the fear of a Sniper will make enemies avoid open areas, which allows the Pyro to more easily ambush them. This is especially effective when the Pyro is using the Backburner.
+
* Combining Jarate with afterburn can be extremely powerful and will severely weaken even some of the most resilient classes in a matter of seconds.
+
* Due to the Pyro's effective range being so small, they are a good target for long-range harassment from enemy Snipers or Engineers and their Sentry Guns. Killing these threats goes a long way towards protecting your Pyros when needed.
+
* A Pyro can light your Huntsman arrows on fire. This is especially effective when you are fighting close to the frontlines, as the Pyro can constantly keep your arrows lit up.
+
* A Pyro can use their Flare Gun to harass enemy Snipers, making it easier for you to take them out.

*When your team is charging for the point, hang back and aim toward the doors or corridors that go to C. This will be where enemy reinforcements come through, and if you either fire arrows or train your laser dot in a clearly visible spot, it will deter the RED team from coming through.
+
Demoman
+
Like the Soldier, the Demoman is a bulky class that can protect you with his explosive ordnance. You also can be great protection for the Demoman in certain situations.
+
* When the Demoman is using the B.A.S.E. Jumper be sure to protect him, as he is an easy target when descending, especially for enemy Snipers.
+
* If possible, take out any enemy's Scottish Resistance or Quickiebomb Launcher stickybombs with your Sniper Rifle or SMG, as they can destroy your Demoman's own stickies.
+
* You provide good long range assistance to a Demoman, as he lacks any hitscan weaponry. Focus on targets that are outside the Demoman's effective range.
+
* Do not "steal" sure kills from a Demoman who is using the Half-Zatoichi, as he will then be unable to put it away without suffering 50 HP of damage.
+
* You can greatly assist a Demoman in taking out an enemy Sentry nest. Taking out the Engineer with your Sniper Rifle makes sure he can't repair or haul his buildings while the Demoman destroys them.

*If there are multiple enemies on the point, throw Jarate onto it through a doorway. This will make any pushes onto the point from your team a lot more effective, and may scare off valuable targets such as Medics or Heavies if timed right.
+
Heavy
+
The Heavy is an important class in the sense that he is capable of a fearsome level of defense to both yourself and your allied Medics. Therefore, it is in your best interest to protect them wherever possible. On the opposite side, the Heavy also is great at protecting you from the average threats that can give Snipers a rough time.
+
* Eliminating enemy Snipers is of utmost importance when supporting a friendly Heavy. The Heavy is a slow class with a large hitbox, making him a juicy target for a Sniper. This is especially true when the Heavy is using the Brass Beast, which decreases Heavy's already slow movement speed while spun up down to a crawl.
+
* The Heavy's firepower and obvious, intimidating presence will usually draw lots of enemy fire to him. This allows you to pick your targets more carefully without having to worry too much about incoming fire.
+
* The Heavy's Sandvich can both extinguish and heal you in cases where you cannot reach a health pack in time before burning to death from afterburn.
+
* If you are close to the frontlines with a Heavy and facing a group of opponents, try to hit all of them with Jarate, or tag them with the Sydney Sleeper. The Heavy can then easily deal with them with his Minigun.
+
* The Heavy excels at killing any opponents that face him head-on. This means classes like the Scout and Pyro will have a rough time reaching you without going through your Heavy buddy first.
+
* Although the Heavy boasts the most health of all the classes and is usually not likely to die due to afterburn, extinguishing him with Jarate is still a good idea, as it allows him to save his Sandvich for a more critical situation.
+
* A Heavy using the Holiday Punch can make enemies laugh, allowing you to easily headshot them.
+
* A Heavy using the Natascha can slow down enemies, which makes it easier for you to take them out.

*Do not use the SMG for Spychecking or killing Spies going in for the kill, as it is far too slow in terms of damage and it will allow them to make a quick getaway through the numerous corridors. Instead, use Jarate and/or the Tribalman's Shiv to put pressure on the Spy and make him easily trackable.
+
Engineer
+
While working with an Engineer may not be overly effective, you can still help him keep his Sentry nest maintained.
+
* While the Engineer himself is rather close-ranged in combat, his Sentry Gun has a very large effective hitscan range. This makes it very useful in deterring classes that attempt to ambush you while sniping.
+
* The Spy causes trouble for both the Engineer and the Sniper, but their combined tools can make a Spy's life very difficult if used properly:
+
** Make sure to protect your Engineer when he is using the Wrangler, as he may stand completely still while using it, making him an easier target for Spies to backstab.
+
** If the Engineer's buildings are being sapped, throw Jarate close to the buildings to reveal the Spy.
+
* If you have the SMG equipped, you can use it to destroy enemy sticky bombs that threaten your Engineer's buildings.
+
* Taking out enemy Medics denies their ÜberCharge advantage, which goes a long way toward defending a Sentry nest.
+
* The Engineer can be very effective in protecting you at close range, thanks to his Shotgun.
+
* Jarate greatly increases the effectiveness of the Southern Hospitality. Its added fire vulnerability is mitigated and its bleed damage will be upgraded to mini-crits.
+
* The Pomson 6000 can light your Huntsman arrows on fire.

*At C, try attacking solo from different angles via the many different doorways. This will make the enemy's job of staying out of potential sniping zones a lot harder, and also may allow you to get into a Sentry Gun's blind spot.
+
Medic
+
Protecting your Medic from the enemy Snipers or other similar threats should be your first priority at all times.
+
* Since you will often be closer to the battle when using the Huntsman, Medics may often come to you for protection if their pocket has died or if a particularly dangerous foes like a Scout or Spy is chasing after him. Since you can more easily protect yourself from close range with the Huntsman and SMG, you can help deal with the threat quickly and allow the Medic to get back to the safety of beefier teammates.
+
** While you are not a very efficient pocket for a Medic, the Huntsman paired with the Kritzkrieg can still do considerable damage in the hands of a skilled Huntsman Sniper. This also applies to the SMG or Cleaner's Carbine, though not to the same extent.
+
* Always extinguish the Medic first with your Jarate. You will automatically gain back 20% of it's charge, so there is no reason to be greedy about using it.
+
* You will generally be a fair distance away from your Medic, so try not to rely on his healing and remember the locations of health packs. If you absolutely need a Medic, go to him rather than have him come to you, as his distance from you means he may have to abandon the rest of the team to help you. If he is using the Crusader's Crossbow, stand completely still so he can quickly heal you from a distance and get back to his work.

*If you are attacking C from the connecting B corridors, try to fire arrows around the corner at the middle windows. This will allow you to freely attack the main area assuming there are no Sentry Guns present on the left side of the near walkway (the Rifle can also be used here, though you will not be able to retreat after firing immediately, in case of a Soldier, Scout or Demoman jumping into the windows).
+
Sniper
+
Two Snipers working together is extremely hazardous to the enemy team, as they will constantly have to avoid open areas, limiting their effectiveness.
+
* If the other Sniper is using the SMG or Cleaner's Carbine, equip Jarate to improve its effectiveness.
+
* You can work as a Sniper-Spotter pair: one can stay scoped in to keep his shot fully charged, while the other can stay unscoped to call out potential targets and keep watch for ambushes or Spies.
+
* A pair of Snipers is especially problematic for a lone enemy Sniper, as he constantly has to worry about a headshot from both of you, limiting his effectiveness.
+
* If the other Sniper is using the Sydney Sleeper you can equip the Bushwacka and have one Sniper drench enemies in Jarate while having the other finish them off.
+
* If one Sniper is using the Huntsman, the other would do well to use a hitscan type of Primary to better deal with Snipers, or when faster ranged damage is needed.
+
* Multiple Snipers can be very powerful when coordinated together, and cause massive chaos. However, two Snipers is more often than not enough, consider going a different class if you notice more than two Snipers on your team.

Defense
+
Spy
*Use Jarate to make points easier to retake if the BLU team are capturing them. This will enhance the effect of Soldiers, Demomen and Pyros directly attacking the point, and the combination of explosive damage, fire damage and Jarate will finish off any enemies quickly.
+
You and the Spy fulfill a very similar role, albeit in a different fashion. Cooperating with a Spy can maximize the effectiveness of this role and instill fear and paranoia on the enemy team.
+
* The Spy's intelligence can be very important when deciding where to position yourself. If the Spy alerts you to an enemy heading towards a specific chokepoint, you can reach that point before they do and surprise them with a charged (head)shot.
+
* If you see a friendly Spy on fire, put him out with Jarate to keep his cover up. As a perk, if it's an enemy Spy, he'll be soaked in it, revealing him.
+
* If your Spy's presence is revealed to the enemy team, use that opportunity to headshot as many opponents as you can while their attention is diverted.
+
* Communication with a Spy is very important: you can wait until he is in position behind an enemy Pocket, take out theira Medic and then let him deal with the Pocket, or vice versa.
+
* You can take out a whole Sentry nest with a Spy. Take out the Engineer with your Sniper Rifle and let the Spy take care of the buildings with his Sapper. If needed, supplement with shots from your Primary, or with the SMG's tight bullet spread.
+
* Due to their nature of being single-target classes, the Sniper and Spy are best off going for different targets or trying to coordinate taking down 2 or 3 targets at a time. However, don't be afraid to abandon each other to retreat into a better situation rather than dying.

*Use the Sniper Rifle to aim directly at the BLU spawn doors from the safety of the raised areas around the points, as you will be able to kill enemies instantly instead of having to predict when they are going to come out fo the spawn with the Huntsman.
+
Sniping Priorities
+
Priorities vary and depend on the situation at the time. The following list should often, but not always, be used in order to specify which target is the first to take down. But if there is an easier shot to take, you should take the time to kill that target first. For example, if you have a large number of teammates battling a nearby Medic with a Heavy, sometimes taking out the Heavy first is the better choice since your teammates will be able to quickly control the area and kill the isolated Medic. If you shoot the Medic first, the Heavy might hold his ground by himself long enough for reinforcements to arrive, but it will only prevent them from using an ÜberCharge.

*Spycheck people regularly with Jarate or the Tribalman's Shiv. This will prevent any sudden attacks from the corridors behind or between A and B, and allow your team to quickly identify them as a threat should you die.
+
In order of priority, you should be taking out:
+
# Snipers
+
# Medics
+
# Demomen
+
# Heavies

*When defending C, you can stand on the top right ledge with the Rifle to pick off any targets trying to come through the far left corridors from B. However, be careful of Spies coming up behind you, along with the usual threats of enemy Snipers and long range rockets from the far left left.
+
The rest in relative priority order:
+
# Soldiers
+
# Engineers
+
# Pyros
+
# Spies
+
# Scouts

Pipeline
+
* Snipers are on the top of the list because they deny your teammates the ability to cross an open space freely and present the biggest threat to you as another Sniper.
General
* The long sightlines and lack of cover make this a very good map for Snipers. Set up with your teammates to deny the enemy access to corridors, doorways and their cart.

* The abundance of shortcuts and flanking routes render Spies a very dangerous threat. Always keep an eye out for them sneaking around. Don't be afraid to Spy check any suspicious teammates.
+
* Medics are next because they have the ability to heal and activate an ÜberCharge. They can also assist the enemy forces by providing overheals in order to survive the brutal fight with your teammates. The Medics are a higher priority when they have an ÜberCharge ready.

* Toss Jarate on the enemy cart while they are pushing it, there will likely be many enemies to be coated. This will make it much easier for your teammates to kill them.
+
* Demoman's area denial is a formidable defense against your team; he can easily block your flank routes and choke points with Stickybombs, and his grenades can deal 400 damage in a few seconds. Taking him out destroys his stickies and prevents him from spamming explosives, allowing your team to move in.

Section 1
+
* Heavy's job is to block attacks intended for his teammates and grind down overextending enemies. Despite his large hitbox and slow movement speed, a good Heavy will duck and weave out of your shots, causing you to waste time charging shots to try to hit him. However, when he is killed the enemy team becomes more vulnerable to spam and flanks, and the enemy team will lose firepower.
* Stay near your spawn while defending your base so that respawned teammates can keep you safe and check for Spies.

* Move up to the center when possible to support your team, keeping the enemy from using their main spawn exit doors under the threat of headshots.
+
* Soldiers can be a dangerous threat if they take notice of your presence, and Direct Hit Soldiers are especially dangerous. They can strafe and fire rockets at you to prevent a clean shot, and good soldiers may even attempt to rocket jump toward you with the sole purpose of eliminating you. Taking them down will essentially save your teammates the possibility of being wiped out by the Soldier's rockets.

* The side route on the left as you exit your base will take you to an elevated platform behind the enemy. This will provide you with a good view of the enemy base until they spot you. Be aware that Soldiers and Demomen will attempt to rocket/sticky jump into your hiding spot.
+
* Without his buildings, Engineer doesn't pose much of a threat to you or your team. However, his nest makes a stellar defense, as long as he's maintaining it. Once he dies, his buildings are much easier to demolish - if you have a sightline, shoot them. If Engineer is running the Gunslinger, picking him off isn't as high a priority, as Mini-Sentry Guns have fairly little area-denial capability.

Section 2
+
* Pyros have awkward-shaped heads, which can make it easier to kill them. They have the ability to easily destroy your team in close combat, so they must be taken down quickly and prior to their onslaught. Pyros equipped with the Flare Gun can set you aflame at range and greatly hinder your ability to snipe.
* The long, main corridor is perfect for sniping, as there is almost no cover for the other players. Be aware that you do not have any cover either, so be careful of incoming rockets, grenades or opposing Snipers.

* There are numerous ways to get behind you in your base, so be sure to check these paths occasionally in case of Spies, Scouts or other enemy players.
+
* Spies are usually cloaked or disguised. If you see one, shoot him before he causes any trouble, but they will become hard to find as time goes on. Thus, you probably should not worry about them, though if you spot a Spy and did not see him die, call out his presence to your team and watch your back. Most of the time, he should not be a sniping priority.

Section 3
+
* Scouts move too fast in most cases for sniping, and you would be wasting your time and ammo trying to snipe Scouts. In fact, the only times you should even attempt to snipe a Scout is when he is capturing an objective (such as the Intelligence or the Control Point), there are no other larger threats to kill, or if he's closing in on you. If you must snipe a Scout, charge a scoped shot and wait until he is in midair and has used his double-jump, then bodyshot him for an instant kill. (Small exception: On 2Fort, Scouts can often pose a great threat to you and your team if they take the bridge's roof. If you time it right, you can often take them out and retreat to cover before an enemy takes a shot at you. This doesn't make them the highest priority (they are little more than a nuisance if they miss their jump), but makes them a more significant threat than most Spies and Pyros would.)

* The Sniper bunker attached to your spawn can be the best location to snipe the opposing team from. There is a pathway up to the bunker so be aware of any incoming attacks and flanking players.
+

* Focus on removing the enemy teams Snipers first, as they are the most dangerous to your team on this section.

* The carts are usually hotly contested, keep an eye out for anyone moving the enemy cart and attempt to kill them, slowing their progress.

* Use your long sight lines to warn teammates of incoming attacks from above or below.

Cold Blooded Killer

Quick Tips

  • Snipers need to be aware of their surroundings because they are often the main targets of Spies and enemy Snipers, both of which they are most vulnerable to. Equip the Razorback, SMG, or Jarate to help with Spies. While reloading your rifle, look around and move from side to side to Spy check the area you're sniping from.
  • Try not to crowd up the class! Too many Snipers can ruin a team's viability. If you're not getting kills as a Sniper, you're not contributing and thus should consider switching classes until there are fewer Snipers.
  • Put your crosshairs on a target before scoping to maximize mobility.

General

Keep the dot on a nearby object so enemy players won't suspect you to be there.
  • Since your enemies can see the laser dot of your rifle, consider aiming at a doorway or other obstacle to hide your presence.
    • In contrast to this, you can use your laser dot to discourage enemy advances.
  • On a separate note, the Sniper Rifle's laser dot can also be used for Spy checking by backing into a corner, scoping in and slowly sweeping from one end of the area to the other.
  • Watch for enemy Snipers.
  • Sticking to one spot might get you killed. The freezecam will give your position away after a single kill; you should switch to a new location often, especially after killing another Sniper or firing a shot from the Machina, which fires an obvious tracer that shows everyone your position.
  • Mobility in general is a valued trait for the Sniper. Remember that walking while zoomed is ineffective, as your speed is almost halved.
  • Pick your targets carefully.
    • A quick shot against a Medic's patient, or the Medic himself, can force him to use his ÜberCharge early, allowing your teammates to kill the patient before he has a good chance to inflict any damage to your team on the front lines.
      • However, a Headshot with a Sniper Rifle will instantly kill a Medic (unless the Medic is overhealed). Take this into consideration, as you can easily take out support Medics.
  • Disabling the automatic re-zoom option might help you, but it's not a requirement. Some Snipers prefer to not use the automatic re-zoom of the Sniper Rifle's scope after every shot. To prevent the re-zoom, turn off the automatic re-zoom in the "Advanced Options" button on the main menu.
    • Alternately, pressing alt-fire after taking a scoped shot and before the rifle has re-zoomed will prevent the re-zoom from occurring.
  • A fully-charged shot can instantly destroy any Level 1 Building and do major damage to others.
  • Crouching shifts your vision downwards while making you a much smaller target (albeit a slower one). This can be useful for getting a better shot on your enemies. Crouching may also throw off enemy Snipers going for a headshot, especially if you have just fired a shot and are retreating.
  • Jumping to avoid an enemy Sniper will only make you an easier target to hit, as you will move through the air in a predictable path (unless you are air strafing).
  • Pay attention to respawn timers, especially when facing many enemy Snipers. After killing an enemy Sniper, you may only have a few seconds to focus on other targets before they respawn and target you.
  • When forced into close combat (i.e. encountering an enemy at close range), you have two options: retreat and attempt a quick headshot or bodyshot, or fight with your secondary and melee weapons.
  • When sniping, it's common for one or more Spies to simultaneously attack you. You can use walls to protect your back while you attack if you don't use the Razorback. But keep alert, as a Spy can kill you just as easily with their Revolver or backstab you from the side, if you're not careful.
    • If Spies become a problem even after equipping the Razorback, consider equipping the Jarate and the Bushwacka.
    • Alternatively, you can stay near your teammates for support, preventing Spies from attacking you as easily.

Bodyshots versus Headshots

Generally, a Sniper should be using the power of headshots to their advantage to kill or control enemies. However, there are cases where a bodyshot may be easier or more useful.

  • No-scope bodyshots are useful when dealing with opponents up close, whereas a headshot is much harder to pull off without practice.
  • Sometimes, just the presence of a Sniper is enough to deter enemies from crossing through an area. Despite this, there may be enemies who will be willing to test your aim, such as Scouts or disguised Spies. You can use charged bodyshots to deal with them if your aim isn't up to snuff.
  • If an enemy Sniper is more experienced than you or is out-sniping you, using charged bodyshots to kill them outright or uncharged shots to throw off their aim may be a valuable utility.
  • Engineers are most often around or hiding among their buildings to keep themselves safe from headshots. In cases like this, a fully charged bodyshot may be your only option, as he will be protected by his Sentry Gun or Dispenser otherwise.
  • If enemies are aware of your presence and are actively firing at you to throw off your aim, going the easier route of shooting them with a bodyshot can kill them, or at the very least shake off beefier targets while you retreat.
  • With the Sydney Sleeper, your headshots are only able to deal Mini-Crit damage, and you cover your foes in Jarate so you rely less on headshots and let your teammates finish them off for you. This weapon works best with bodyshots as a result.
    • The Sydney Sleeper allows you to extinguish teammates no matter where you shoot them. Use bodyshots or no-scopes to your advantage in protecting teammates.
    • Using 'quickscopes' on opponents will cover them in Jarate for at least 2 seconds, making it easier to kill them with Mini-Crits if needed.
  • Despite their uses, it is important to never become complacent in using only bodyshots.

  • Aim for the head. A headshot will automatically crit, and a fully charged headshot is the only thing short of a backstab that can instantly kill a fully Overhealed Heavy.
  • A fully charged Bodyshot can instantly kill Scouts, Engineers, Spies, Medics, and other Snipers if they are not Overhealed. A notable exception is a Medic with the Vaccinator, which can provide him with a 10% damage resistance.
  • Keeping your back against a wall while zoomed in can protect you from a backstab, but you should still be wary of Spies. On the other hand, keeping your back against a wall will leave you more open to splash damage from rockets.
    • Note that Spies can backstab 180 degrees around the back of a player, so you are still partially vulnerable even with your back against a wall.
  • Unscoped Sniper Rifle shots do 50 damage. If a target is too close, you should be using your secondary or melee weapons.
  • Standing still while zoomed in will make you an easy target for enemy Snipers and Spies. Move around and Spy check often to throw both classes off.
  • Do not stay zoomed in constantly. It's easy to miss an enemy coming towards you with your narrowed field of view, or miss a chance to hit another enemy a few yards away.
  • Positioning is key; you should look for high vantage points to get a good view of the battlefield, or positions where you can easily cover multiple enemy routes. Ideally, you want to maximize your threat to your enemies while minimizing their threat to you.
  • Changing the cl_interp variable to 0.034 in your autoexec.cfg file can help increase the likelihood of hitting a fast-moving enemy. See Scripting.
  • Firing through small holes in walls minimizes the space enemies can shoot back through. This makes you a minuscule target, but this also limits the area you can cover.
  • When scoped your Sniper Rifle emits a laser to wherever you are looking at. Enemies can see this and will avoid it, if an enemy hides behind cover, move your scope away from where they can see it to bait them out.

The table below lists the percentage charge needed to kill enemies with a bodyshot/headshot. Percentages greater than 100 mean you cannot kill enemies with one shot in this fashion.

Note: All classes except the Scout, Pyro, and Sniper have gear that can increase or decrease their total health, so only use this table as a guide. The Soldier may use the Battalion's Backup, reducing your damage and preventing you from scoring headshots on his affected teammates: Look for a circle around their feet.

  • The Huntsman gives the Sniper a bow to fire arrows as projectiles while removing his ability to scope. Charging the arrow increases damage as usual, but also increases the arrow's projectile speed and horizontal arcing.
  • This weapon is meant for a more aggressive and mobile playstyle. In addition it greatly improves your combat capabilities at close range, at the cost of long range accuracy.
  • The Huntsman's arrows take time to travel to your target. Lead your target unless they're headed straight for you. Arrows will always hit to the lower-right corner of the crosshair.
    • Arrows arc downwards when fired. The longer you charge your shot, the straighter and faster your shot will fly. Aim your arrows above your target if they are far away, and constantly raise the distance above your target the farther away they are.
  • When under fire, don't stick around to see if your shots hit their mark; duck behind cover! Enable the hit sound in Advanced Options so you can easily hear a successful shot.
  • Occasionally take shots at areas enemies are likely to appear from, even if you don't see anyone there at the moment. By the time your arrow reaches its destination, an enemy may have appeared. This is most useful when aiming at common Sniper nests and choke points.
  • A Sniper using a standard kind of Sniper Rifle has an advantage over you, since his weapon doesn't have travel time. Avoid engaging them at medium/long range unless they are under fire or are plainly unaware of your presence.
    • If the Sniper is taking a shot and ducking behind cover in a very predictable pattern, it's possible to time your shots in order to hit him as he peeks out again. However, be sure you think about doing the same after you take the shot. If you miss, the enemy Sniper will see your arrow and know that you are reloading and completely vulnerable. If you don't move from where he last saw you, he'll quite easily predict where to shoot next.
  • Huntsman Snipers have higher mobility and no scope to restrict their field of view. They are also capable of landing near-instant headshots, and have an easier time defending themselves with their primary weapon.
    • This helps in defending yourself against Spies in particular, as you do not need to scope in to deal lethal damage to them. The larger projectile hitbox will also give you a more sizable advantage in tracking them down if they cloak to escape.
  • The SMG pairs well with the Huntsman; it allows you to finish off an enemy faster if you miss a headshot and instead bodyshot them. In addition, if you run out of arrows, you will have a secondary damage source.
    • If you equip a secondary other than the SMG, keep an eye on the amount of ammunition available. If you run out of arrows, you will only be able to use your melee weapon for direct damage.
  • Use alt-fire to gently release drawn arrows without firing. Holding it drawn back for more than 5 seconds will result in a very inaccurate shot that will likely miss.
    • Remember that the Huntsman loses aim after a few seconds. It is recommended to pull back the Huntsman only when you are certain an enemy is about to come into your line of sight. (Press alt-fire to release drawn arrows without firing.)
    • There is a visual cue that indicates that you should cancel your shot to prevent the shot from being inaccurate. If you notice the Sniper's hands beginning to shake while drawn back, that means you have been aiming for more than 5 seconds, and the shot will fly away from the crosshair if released.
      • Don't overly rely on this visual cue, as you won't need to see that if you know the timing.
  • The Huntsman does not have a laser sight to alert enemies, giving you an edge and an element of surprise on the battlefield. Use this advantage to fire safely behind cover. Make sure to still keep your mobility, though, as the freezecam will still give away your position!
  • Before going around a corner, have your Huntsman fully drawn to be ready for approaching enemies. Alternately, jump around a corner while charging a shot to surprise your attackers.
  • Avoid fighting in wide-open areas, where enemies can easily dodge your arrows. Stick to narrow spaces or mid-range combat whenever possible.
  • Fired arrows each have a team-colored trail and will stick in walls for a while. This can give away your position.
  • Attempt to ambush enemies; catching them off-guard will leave them with no time to dodge your arrows.
  • A friendly Pyro with any Flamethrower or a torch on DeGroot Keep can light your arrows on fire, even if they're not drawn. Lit arrows have the added bonus of setting your enemies on fire. Switching weapons will cause a lit arrow to go out.
  • Since the Huntsman does similar damage to the Rifle while firing faster, you can use it to put pressure on enemy Medics and Engineers. Team up with a friendly Soldier or Sniper to quickly take down buildings or force a Medic to deploy an ÜberCharge.
  • The Huntsman can do a maximum of 360 damage with a fully-charged headshot. This means you cannot kill an overhealed Heavy with a single arrow, because his Medic gives him up to 450 health.
    • To kill an overhealed Heavy under these conditions, you will need at least two headshots. Do the fully-charged headshot first, followed by a quick headshot as soon as the next arrow is ready. Regardless, it is recommended to target the Medic first before damaging the Heavy.
    • Heavies overhealed by the Dalokohs Bar can still be killed with a fully-charged headshot, as this only increases Heavy's health to 350.
  • Unlike any of the scoped rifles, the Huntsman can be fired while in the air. This can allow you to surprise enemies from above. However, once drawn back, you cannot jump until the arrow is released or fired.

The table below lists the percentage charge needed to kill enemies with a bodyshot/headshot. Percentages greater than 100 mean you cannot kill enemies with one shot in this fashion.

Note: If random damage spread is enabled, body shot percentages will vary. All classes but the Pyro and Sniper have items that can increase or lower their total health, so only use this table as a guide.

Sydney Sleeper
Craft
Sydney Sleeper
Killicon sydney sleeper.png 1 25 43-57 128-172 150 450
  • The Sydney Sleeper gives the Sniper the ability to apply the Jarate effect on scoped shots, with the duration scaled from 2 to 5 seconds depending on the charge.
    • Even though it can be used to douse flames on teammates, executing this is quite difficult. It is recommended to aim for the center of mass.
    • Sharing all the downsides of Jarate in addition to the upsides, the Sydney Sleeper's Jarate debuff can be prematurely cancelled by the doused enemy in the same way that Jarate's debuff can, including through prolonged healing from a Medic, Engineer's Dispenser, or the Payload cart, being submerged in water, or touching a Resupply cabinet.
    • The Mini-Crit headshots do not register as headshots for Achievement purposes and Scoring systems. Consider using other primary weapons if you are trying to obtain any achievements or contracts related to headshots.
  • The Sydney Sleeper can be described as a support-oriented version of the Sniper Rifle.
    • Despite being less reliant on Headshots and more reliant on Bodyshots and Assists, the Sydney Sleeper is just as difficult to use as the Sniper Rifle, if not more difficult to use.
  • The darts apply Jarate onto a single target, with duration increasing by how long you charged it up. You can use each shot to "mark" opponents with the Jarate's debuff, highlighting high priority enemies for your team.
  • An unscoped shot on a coated enemy will do 68 damage (the same as a Headshot). Use this to finish off attackers.
    • A 68-damage Quickscope Headshot followed up by a 68-damage unscoped Bodyshot on the same enemy (who will be coated from the first shot) will result in death by this point if he is a Scout, Engineer, Sniper, or Spy, and hasn't had any contact with Healing/Water sources during this time. There is almost no room for error with this combo. To give more room for error, the first shot can be charged slightly. This is also the relevant strategy for dealing with enemy Pyros, Demomen, Soldiers, and Heavies.
  • The Mini-Crit headshot ability can allow a Sniper to deal over 200 damage with a single fully charged Headshot, giving him more power against classes like the Pyro, Demoman, and Soldier, who can now be killed in one shot (if they are not Overhealed).
    • Despite being more freely able to rely on Bodyshots, it's important to always aim for Headshots with the Sydney Sleeper, in order to maximize your damage potential.
  • With the Sydney Sleeper, it is important to stick to areas where your teammates are present, or to areas where there are no enemies present aside from the occasional enemy Spy (which can easily be dealt with).
    • The Sydney Sleeper can benefit greatly from a partnership with a friendly Engineer, who can provide great protection from various enemies, and can also supply Ammo and Health.
    • It is a good idea to stay slightly further back from the rest of your team with the Sydney Sleeper.
  • In a heated firefight, focus on hitting heavier classes with charged shots to aid your teammates. Coated enemies will be more cautious before entering a battlefield.
    • Despite being less effective than just killing the enemies immediately, this can be used to control enemy movements. This is especially useful while playing around the objective of the game mode, where preventing enemies from entering or leaving an area can ease the pressure on your teammates to defend or attack the objective.
  • Prioritize hitting Spies if you find any. The Jarate debuff will temporarily nullify their Invisibility and any Disguises.
    • The Jarate debuff will distinguish them from your teammates (if they are Disguised as members of your own team).
    • This is especially effective if they have the Dead Ringer equipped, as when they "die", their outline will be highlighted by the Jarate effect for the duration of their charge; the Dead Ringer cannot cure Jarate.
    • Spies who are using the Invis Watch or Cloak and Dagger can be confirmed to be using those weapons (as opposed to the Dead Ringer) if an invisible but coated figure is not seen fleeing the scene.
  • The Sydney Sleeper is one of the best weapons the Sniper has for taking out Engineer buildings because of its faster charge rate and the downsides do not apply to the Engineer's buildings.
  • Never try to face a Sniper head-on; he can headshot you quickly whereas you must wait a few seconds before being able to kill him. If you are forced to face one head-on, use corners and objects to safely charge your shot, and peek out to hopefully make a kill. Otherwise, rely on no-scopes.
    • Take aim when the Sniper is busy or distracted; he is still a threat to your team, and it is still your job to deal with him. Take your time, either by waiting for a chance or taking an alternate route, to remain out of his mind/sight. You should be able to safely kill him if this goes as planned.
  • The SMG is a more viable backup weapon when an enemy is coated, so it makes a good companion.
    • Similarly, the Cleaner's Carbine is also rendered more effective in such a situation.
  • Even though each headshot reduces the recharge time of the Jarate by 1 second if it is equipped, the Jarate is not exactly a great combo with the Sydney Sleeper due to the slight redundancy when compared to the Sydney Sleeper's abilities.
    • Pairing the Sydney Sleeper + Jarate combo with Bushwacka can help take maximum advantage of the extra opportunities to apply the Jarate debuff.
  • The Darwin's Danger Shield is a decent backup weapon for the Sydney Sleeper. However, the player should not be fooled by the shield's statistics and charge into the battlefield; it should be used passively as a defense against fiery weapons, like the Scorch Shot, from a distance.
  • The Bushwacka is also a great backup weapon for coated enemies.
    • You can 'Quickscope' close-range enemies with a dart and quickly switch to the Bushwacka. However, you should avoid charging at an enemy with your Bushwacka hoping to take advantage of Sydney Sleeper's Jarate debuff; the enemy would likely retaliate and take advantage of your damage vulnerability while you hold up the Bushwacka.

  • This weapon rewards skilled Snipers the most, as one must obtain three headshot kills in a single life to begin receiving any benefit from it.
  • For your first few heads, target classes that can be killed with an uncharged headshot (Scouts, Engineers, Medics, Snipers, Spies).
  • Beware of Soldiers with the Air Strike, Demomen with the Eyelander, Medics with the Vita-Saw, or other Snipers wielding the Bazaar Bargain; if they manage to kill you, your Head/Organ count will be added to theirs! But if you manage to kill them with a scoped headshot, their Head/Organ count will be added to yours! Demomen who have collected several heads gain glowing eyepatches, so target them to gain heads quickly.
  • Prioritize surviving over trying to go on a sniping rampage, even if you have several heads. Your head counter will be lost upon your death.

  • The Machina deals 15% more damage and can pierce through multiple targets while scoped at full charge, but at the cost of generating considerably more noise per shot, being unable to fire un-scoped, and leaving a highly-distinctive team-colored tracer behind the shot.
  • The Machina is best in long corridors and entryway sniping, where the Machina's piercing attribute allows it to hit multiple foes at once. The BLU team entrances on Payload maps, the tunnel and alleyway on Badwater Basin, and maps that funnel enemies down specific routes are where the Machina truly excels. The Machina can kill both a Heavy and his Medic behind him with a well-placed, fully-charged shot.
  • This weapon all but necessitates taking the SMG along with it. As the Machina cannot fire unless scoped, it is difficult to defend yourself in close-quarters combat. Though the weapon is still functional with other secondary weapons, you will be forced to rely on your melee weapon for dealing with enemies that manage to get close.
  • You can simulate unscoped shots by holding down primary fire and then pressing alt-fire to shoot.
  • This weapon's power for stealth trade can be countered by using it whilst roaming, so the tracer cannot be used by your opponents to locate you in any one position.
  • The Machina may succeed where other rifles fail; a Heavy with the Fists of Steel active can survive a fully charged headshot from the Sniper Rifle (450 − 40% = 270), but the Machina's extra damage will kill a Heavy under these conditions (518 − 40% = 311).

  • The Hitman's Heatmaker comes with a "Focus" meter that increases with each kill and assist; in this case, every kill fills the meter by 33%, and every assist fills by 11%.
  • Contrary to popular belief, the player can unscope while in focus mode, and even switch weapons. They simply remain scoped unless the player chooses to unscope.
  • Since the benefits of the rifle are limited to its focus mode, consider a different rifle if Spies frequently prowl your location.
    • This weapon pairs well with the Razorback, as you are vulnerable to backstabs while still in scoped mode. Listen for the sound of your Razorback breaking so you can unscope and kill the Spy. However, you are still vulnerable to the Spy's Revolver, which may kill you before you have time to react.
  • Though bodyshots cannot get one-hit kills, do not be discouraged from using them — if the enemy is under attack or not at full health, you still have a high chance of getting a kill or assist despite performing a less difficult shot.
  • This is a good weapon for a Sniper who likes to stay back from the front lines and avoid risks, in order to fill up his focus. Choose this weapon if you like to aim for headshots and want a bonus to charge rate, but don't wish to carry the Bazaar Bargain's initial charge rate penalty.
  • Activate your Focus when your target(s) moves unpredictably. This will help you line up your shot by staying zoomed in, and comes with the bonus of a faster charge rate for heavier targets. Make sure your back is against a wall if you can while doing this, as Spies will be even more of a threat.
  • This weapon is especially good for Mann vs Machine, due to its rapid-shot ability against multiple, or giant robots. Try to mix with damage boost upgrade to maximize its potential.
  • This Primary necessitates a mobile playstyle, as the tracer rounds gained through the use of Focus is sure to attract unwelcome guests to your sniping nest. This can be counteracted by predetermining multiple vantage points you wish to snipe from and rotating between them to keep opponents wondering where you are at any given time.
  • The firing sound of this weapon is significantly softer than the other rifles thanks to its suppressor. This will make you more difficult to track in general, due to the loss of the distinct firing sound from a Sniper Rifle. It also means you can potentially infiltrate the enemy team's backlines and pick off high priority targets for a bit before being discovered.

  • The Classic allows the player to charge their shot without having to zoom in, but the player still have decreased movement speed. It is only capable of getting headshots when fully charged, and deals 10% less damage on bodyshots. Unlike other rifles, the Classic is charged by holding down the fire key, and releasing to fire the shot. The Classic also allows the ability to fire multiple shots without leaving the scope.
  • The player can actually cancel a shot simply by switching weapons to secondary or melee, or by jumping while releasing the fire key.
  • Due to the damage penalty on bodyshots, try to aim for headshots as much as you can to maximize the effectiveness of this weapon.
  • Only hold down the fire key when you know an enemy is visible, or you'll be vulnerable with your decreased movement speed.
    • Thus, timing is key with this weapon. Hold down the fire key and release only when an enemy is in your line of sight, or you'll end up wasting your shot.
  • Be aware that you cannot fire a charged shot in midair. Look out for classes with Juggling abilities.
  • The Classic is a unique rifle in which it is possible to jump without unscoping or firing a shot. This means you have extra vertical maneuverability with this weapon, even while charging, although you are still limited by slowed movement speed or being unable to fire in the air.
  • Don't be too fooled by the damage penalty for bodyshots, as a fully-charged bodyshot is still capable of killing a non-Overhealed Scout, Spy, Engineer, and Sniper in one shot.
  • It's recommend to use the ability to look around you while charging in case someone, especially Spies, try to kill you from behind your back or too close to the scope. Remember that you can still headshot even while unscoped, as long as the rifle is fully charged.
  • Due to the Classic's unique ability to fire multiple shots while zoomed in, it'll be easier to pick off multiple targets in a short period of time with this weapon.
  • You are at a disadvantage when facing other Snipers, since you cannot spend the time to charge a shot without being headshotted yourself. Use your abilities to move at full speed while scoped in and fire multiple shots without unscoping to your advantage.
  • Try some combos with any SMG, which could minimize the disadvantage of 10% less bodyshot damage.
  • Be aware that Classic leaves a bullet trail on shot. It isn't visible as the Machina or the Hitman's Heatmaker's focused shot, but sensitive players can still notice it easily.

SMG + reskins

Weapon Kill Icon Ammo Damage
Loaded Carried Point Blank Medium Range Long Range Critical
SMG

SMG
Killicon SMG.png 25 75 8-12 4-6 4-5 24
  • The SMG is more suited for close combat than your rifle and has a much tighter spread than other similar sustained fire weapons like the Pistol or Minigun. This gives you a weapon with an excellent middle ground between a wide spread pattern or the pin-point accuracy of your Primary. Additionally, it can be used to finish off low-health enemies who you have just headshot.
  • It's important to make every shot with this weapon count, due to the low damage output. Aim carefully and keep your crosshair trained around the enemy's torso, rather than just spraying bullets wildly.
  • This weapon is useful in rushing opponents due to the fast fire rate. With several bullets hitting their mark, you may pressure your opponents enough to convince them to flee from you instead of continuing to engage.
  • The SMG is a decent Spychecking tool and can be useful for spraying general areas such as around corners or raised platforms to reveal or draw out Spies who are trying to hide in the vicinity. Once you know a Spy is in the immediate area, fire bullets into likely hiding places and watch for blood splattering and Cloak flicker to show when you've hit a Spy.
  • The SMG is much more deadly if used when Mini-Crits or Critical Hits are in effect, due to its low damage and high accuracy. The Kritzkrieg in particular allows you to deal excellent damage, even at longer ranges.
  • Combining the SMG with the Tribalman's Shiv's bleed effect can be incredibly effective.
  • The SMG carries only three extra clips and runs out of ammo surprisingly quickly. Take heed of this and search for ammo packs regularly if you find yourself using this item often to defend yourself.

  • The Cleaner's Carbine is similar to the stock SMG, but has a CRIKEY bar which, after getting filled by dealing damage with the weapon and activated through secondary fire, gives the user a 100% rate of Mini-Crits for 8 seconds. However, it holds 20% less ammo in a clip, fires 25% slower, and grants no random crits.
  • The Cleaner's Carbine allows a Sniper to be more aggressive when hunting down Spies or finishing off foes when in close quarters combat. The power of Mini-Crits and the fast firing speed of this weapon allow you to defend yourself more efficiently, especially against those who normally give you a hard time, such as Scouts or Demoknights.
  • The Mini-Crits pass onto your other weapons, so if an enemy is out of the Cleaner's Carbine's effective range, switch to the rifle to get a quick, unscoped, mini-crit bodyshot. If an enemy is close by and you have to reload the Cleaner's Carbine, switch to your melee to get an easy kill. The Bushwacka, which deals critical hits whenever it would normally Mini-Crit, makes an excellent choice when paired with this weapon.
  • The Carbine is a solid backup choice with the Huntsman. Combining the Mini-Crits with a fully charged bodyshot by the Huntsman will effectively kill any class with 150 health or lower.
  • While it may normally be difficult to smoke out disguised Spies with the SMG, the CRIKEY bar will fill when hitting disguised Spies, making it both an excellent Spy-checking tool and a strong way to finish them off before they can escape after being discovered.
  • The Carbine is well-suited for situations where your need to defend yourself when in enemy territory. The CRIKEY bar is best saved for when the standard damage of the SMG is not effective enough to dissuade your attackers.
  • The firing speed and ammo penalties might not seem like terribly punishing downsides, but may prove lethal to you in a fight. Therefore it is extra important that you hit all your shots.
  • CRIKEY charge can be gained from firing at enemies and buildings alike. Since buildings stand still, are repaired often, and are not subject to damage falloff, you can reliably charge the CRIKEY bar by attacking or destroying Sentry Guns, Dispensers, and Teleporters from afar.

  • The Jarate is similar to the Mad Milk; it is a thrown projectile that covers enemies in the substance, and nullifies the Cloak of enemy Spies and extinguishes teammates and yourself when on fire. Anyone who attacks a player covered in Jarate will deal Mini-Crit. Jarate has a recharge time of 20 seconds.
  • Jarate is thrown at a slight arc, which means it requires you to aim in a different way than most other projectiles. Leading your throw to a certain degree will cause the jar to be tossed more accurately and more likely to hit opponents further away.
  • The Critical hits always prioritize over Mini-Crits from Jarate, meaning that every Jarated enemy you damage will always score either a Critical hit or a Mini-Crit.
  • Try to throw it at a Spy as soon as you spot him so that he can't Cloak and escape. Jarate renders the Spy's Cloak useless, lightly displaying his team color and dripping yellow Jarate particles. If you suspect a Spy is in the vicinity, do not be afraid to use your Jarate to Spycheck.
  • You can use Jarate to extinguish yourself and your allies if on fire. Throw it at the ground if you are on fire yourself. Extinguishing teammates will lessen the cooldown of Jarate by 20%, which rewards you for using it less conservatively.
  • Be aware that Jarate cannot be thrown through friendly players that are further away from you and explode directly on teammates. Try to avoid having it hit a player who is not on fire that is in the way.
  • Pyros, Demomen, and Soldiers can make for good Jarate buddies, since they have powerful area-of-effect attacks with a similar range to Jarate. This means they have a better chance of hitting the coated enemy and dealing more damage to them.
    • Soldiers with any Banner are especially useful, as your Mini-Crits will charge their rage, so that they can grant further buffs.
  • Jarate is a good weapon for when you need to clear a point of enemies quickly. Throwing it at groups of enemies who are on a Cart or Control Point can help your team thin their numbers.
  • Combine Jarate with the Bushwacka, which Crits whenever it can Mini-Crit, for reliable Critical hits.
  • Keep in mind that Jarate does count as a projectile, so it can be airblasted by a Pyro back to you. Similarly, treat Jarate tosses like any other projectile against an experienced Pyro. Aim for the feet or take advantage of the Jarate's large splash radius to minimize the chance of them reflecting it back to you.
  • Remember that Jarate causes enemies to take Mini-Crits. If both teams are pushing in a chokepoint, use Jarate to change the tides of battle.

A Razorback breaks after one successful backstab.
  • The Razorback gives the ability to passively block a single backstab attempt. It additionally will short circuit the Spy's Cloak and prevent him from switching weapons for 2 seconds. As a downside, it completely negates the Sniper's ability to be overhealed.
  • Keep an ear out for the electrical breaking sound of your Razorback, as it means a Spy is right behind you. Try killing him with your melee weapon, but be quick, because if too much time passes, the Spy can kill (or weaken) you with his Revolver.
  • Only use the Razorback if you know the enemy has Spies on their team and those Spies are actively impeding your sniping. The SMG is very advantageous in hunting down Spies in your area or taking down nearby weak enemies. The other secondary item, Jarate, is excellent for keeping already-discovered Spies visible to your team or making enemies easier to kill due to its Mini-Crit effects.
  • The Tribalman’s Shiv pairs very well with the Razorback as the bleeding effect can help to prevent the Spy from escaping via cloaking.
  • The peace-of-mind of being able to survive a backstab helps sniping on a psychological level, despite its many counters. This can be a benefit to certain new players or paranoid Snipers who get backstabbed too often.
  • If you are actively capturing Control Points or pushing the Cart, the Razorback will help protect you from chainstabs.
  • Razorbacks respawn after thirty seconds once they are broken; the only way to get one faster is to visit a resupply locker, so once it's broken, you have to either watch your back for thirty seconds, or head back to spawn to get a new one.
  • If you are not in a well-defended location, the Razorback is not recommended. Experienced Ambassador Spies will kill you before you realize what hit you. However, it can also deter a Your Eternal Reward Spy due to forcing them to choose between killing you and losing a precious disguise or ignoring you and letting you continue picking off their team.
  • The Razorback excels in Medieval Mode, as Spies will be limited to the use of their knives and disguise kits. This will dissuade them from attempting to backstab you, or even engaging with you at all.
  • Just because you are immune to one backstab doesn't mean you can ignore your surroundings. If you know there is a Spy in the area, don't let him go so far as to remove your Razorback. Try Spy-checking or warning your teammates.
  • If you have this shield equipped and are being shot, chances are a Spy is nearby and noticed your Razorback. Assuming you don't die, the best course of action is to run for safety, get health, and warn your teammates.
  • As most experienced Spies will simply switch to their Revolver instead of stabbing your shield, the Razorback is best used for offensive Snipers with the Huntsman or experienced ones "quick-scoping" with the Sniper Rifles, as it will prevent trickstabs.

Darwin's Danger Shield
50% fire damage resistance. 100% afterburn immunity.
  • The Darwin's Danger Shield renders you immune to afterburn and halves the damage taken from fire.
  • When used with the Huntsman, you can get closer to the battlefield. You can now shoot arrows at close range without so much worry about Pyros disrupting you.
    • Alternatively, pairing the Shahanshah with this shield and the Huntsman allows you to make a last stand when things get rough and you must escape.
  • The immunity to afterburn will render the Dragon's Fury a worse option for the Pyro, as the Dragon's Fury relies on enemies to be afflicted with Afterburn in order to output its bonus damage. However, when under direct flame damage, they can still gain increased damage on you, necessitating you keep your distance wherever possible.
    • The fire damage resistance will also halve the damage from the fireball, resulting in prolonging against the Pyro more effectively.
  • This can give an advantage to Snipers that find themselves getting ambushed by enemy Pyros.
    • This is especially useful for negating flare shots, which would otherwise result in flinching from fire damage that could considerably disrupt your aim.
    • Negating afterburn can also deny enemy Pyros from obtaining critical hits from combos, such as the Flare Gun's crit-on-burning-players attribute.
    • However, fighting against Pyro with Darwin's Danger Shield is not very effective. Utilize its fire damage resistance to instead run away from Pyro to the safety of teammates.

Cozy Camper
No flinching while scoped and fully charged. Knockback reduced by 20% while scoped. Regenerate 1-4 health per second while equipped depending how recently the Sniper has been injured.
  • The Cozy Camper grants a 20% knockback resistance while scoped in and completely negates aim flinch while scoped in and fully charged. It will also heal the Sniper passively in a similar fashion to that of the Medic, or Soldier with the Concherer.
  • The Cozy Camper is a good secondary if you often stick around one spot while sniping.
    • The weapon is less effective if you snipe near the front lines. As a result, this is a poor choice with the Huntsman.
    • If you snipe far away from the main action, or take advantage of your scope often, it can be helpful for rifles such as Hitman's Heatmaker.
  • Be sure to take note of when you are actually taking damage; if you have a fully charged shot, you will no longer have an obvious visual indicator of the scope moving.
    • With damaging effects that take place over time (such as afterburn and bleeding), you can fire at least one shot before needing to find a health source.
    • Remember, Pyros firing at you with the Flare Gun or the Detonator can take you out in two or three direct hits.
  • Although you suffer less knockback while scoped, you will still be forced to unscope while in the air and be subject to aerials.
  • It is extremely easy to become complacent while aiming. Be aware of your surroundings lest someone takes you out at close range or with the occasional Kill taunt.
  • The Cozy Camper is not well-suited for Snipers who prefer quick shots and pop in and out of scope often. When using the Cozy Camper, do not be afraid to unscope to reposition for a better shot.
  • The Cozy Camper can work well with the Sydney Sleeper due to its increased charge speed. This combination allows the Sniper to scope in, fire an unflinching quick charged shot, and move behind cover before he can be retaliated against.
  • The Cozy Camper can be detrimental when there are enemy Spies. The attributes of this weapon encourage the Sniper to stay scoped in, which gives Spies ample opportunity to backstab you while you are focused on maintaining your flinch immunity.

  • Two blows with the Kukri are enough to kill non-Overhealed Spies, Scouts, Engineers, or Snipers. Three blows will kill a Demoman, Medic or Pyro, and four will kill a Soldier.
  • Of all the melee weapons you possess, the Kukri is your greatest tool for close-quarters combat if you are in a pinch. Its larger burst damage than the Shahanshah or Tribalman's Shiv, and the lack of damage vulnerability like the Bushwacka can give you an easier time killing your enemy in the case of an ambush from Scouts or Spies.
  • Despite the versatility of your melee weapon, you are still very vulnerable in up-close dueling. It may be in your best interest to retreat, instead of chasing after your opponent to secure a kill, as that increases your chances of meeting up with a class you can't effectively fight against.

Tribalman's Shiv
Killicon tribalman's shiv.png 0.8 seconds 33 98
Bleeding Killicon bleed.png 48 damage over 6 seconds N/A N/A
  • The Tribalman's Shiv trades 50% of the melee damage for the ability to deal bleed damage over time for 6 seconds. The total bleed damage is up to 48 (8 per second, up to 6 seconds), which combined with the 33 melee damage sums to 81 damage.
    • If it mini-crits, the mini-crit melee attack becomes 44, and the total bleed damage becomes 60 (10 per second); it deals 104 damage in total if all bleed is inflicted.
  • In many ways, the Bleeding effect of the Tribalman's Shiv behaves much in the same way as the Pyro's afterburn. However, bleeding has the advantage of not being removed by being submerged in water, or extinguished with Jarate. Only resupply cabinets and health kits can stop the bleeding effect.
  • Use your Jarate in combination with the Shiv for bleeding Mini-Crits. Using this combination results in almost a one-hit kill on 125 HP classes such as the Scout, Spy, Sniper, and Engineer. This combination is also useful when wearing down heavier classes; if needed, supplement this damage with your primary weapon.
    • You can pair this weapon with the Sydney Sleeper as a last resort if your charged shot is unable to kill a class in one hit. Since the bleeding lingers, you may be able to finish off an opponent with the Mini-Crits even if you end up dying.
  • Overall, the Tribalman's Shiv causes more damage than the Kukri, but over a longer duration.
  • Due to the post-damage, two hits with the Tribalman's Shiv on lighter classes (Scout, Spy, Sniper, and Engineer) should be enough to kill them by the bleeding, unless they find a way to heal themselves within 6 seconds.
    • To ensure you kill a lighter class quickly, you can make a quick bodyshot with your rifle of choice before leaving.
  • Cloaked Spies will be semi-visible when bleeding, due to a slight flicker of their Cloak and the blood effect.
  • Spies using the Dead Ringer won't flicker from bleeding, but will still leave the blood effect, revealing their location.
  • Due to the fact that bleeding does not stack when hit the same target with the Tribalman's Shiv multiple times, it may be a good idea to hit each opponent once when fighting multiple foes, and then hit each one again instead of focusing on one first.
  • Pairing the Tribalman's Shiv with the SMG or the Cleaner's Carbine can increase damage on the victim with the bleeding supplemented by the hitscan bullets.
  • This weapon is built for avoiding or escaping direct combat. Using a strategy that requires you to be on the front lines (such as with the Huntsman) is often not very effective.
  • A Critical hit against an enemy with moderate health can be devastating. If you score a Crit against an enemy, you can take the chance to run away and the bleeding will probably finish them off.

Bushwacka

Bushwacka
Killicon bushwacka.png 0.8 seconds 65 195
  • Any attack with the Bushwacka that would be a Mini-Crit will become a full Crit. However, the Bushwacka is unable to get random Critical hits and the Sniper will take 20% more damage while the Bushwacka is active.
  • This weapon can be very effective when used in conjunction with the Jarate and the Cleaner's Carbine, due to its ability to turn Mini-Crits into full Crits.
  • If your enemies have the habit of closing in after being hit by the Sydney Sleeper, this is an excellent counter.
  • The Mini-Crit into Crit effect is applicable to any source of Mini-Crits (Buff Banner, marked for death, etc).
  • The Bushwacka is ideal for dispatching Spies who have activated the Dead Ringer. Coating them in Jarate and hitting them a few times will kill them quickly.
  • In conjunction with a well-placed Jarate toss, the Bushwacka can easily dispatch most enemies; even distracted, overhealed Heavies.
  • Be wary about when you pull out this weapon, due to the increased damage you take when it is active. Only wield it if you are sure that a melee kill is imminent.

Shahanshah + reskins

Shahanshah
Killicon shahanshah.png 0.8 seconds 81 / 49 244 / 146
  • The Shahanshah does 25% less damage when the Sniper is at or above 50% health, but does 25% more damage when he is below 50% health.
  • The Shahanshah is good for fighting Spies. Spies fight at close range, so you'll probably take enough damage to make you a force to be reckoned with.
  • The Shahanshah is best used in combination with the Razorback. The Razorback will encourage Spies to use their Revolver instead of their knife. Being hit with a Revolver will easily bring you under the 50% health requirement and improve your ability to fight Spies even further.
  • The Shahanshah is less effective for ambushing enemies, should the situation arise. For example, if you are the only one around and it becomes necessary to stop a capture, you may need to ambush, which is less effective with this weapon.
  • The Shahanshah can be very powerful when used in tandem with Jarate or the Cleaner's Carbine. The combined damage of being below the 50% threshold and Mini-Crits will make you a forced to be reckoned with, and allow you to fight back against Spies, Scouts and Pyros more effectively.
  • Although you deal extra damage when below half health, try not to always take advantage of the bonus. After all, your reduced health means enemies can very well kill you with no difficulty.

Arrow Stab
Arrow Stab
Killicon arrow stab.png Huntsman
Fortified Compound
500 4 seconds The Sniper will remove the prepped arrow from his bow, spin it behind him, and then fiercely stab it forwards before yanking it back.
  • The Huntsman's Arrow Stab taunt is the second-fastest taunt in the game, taking a mere 4 seconds to kill. The initial thrust stuns enemy players, while pulling the arrow out kills.
    • It takes about 0.7s for the Sniper to stun an enemy after activating the taunt. During the process of taunting, he will say "Stab, stab, stab!". The first "Stab!" word occurs before he stuns the target within thrusting range.
  • You can stun (but not kill) ÜberCharged enemies with the Arrow Stab, causing them to waste precious seconds.
  • You don't need to touch the enemy with the initial thrust to get the kill; the enemy merely must be in melee range when the arrow is yanked back.
  • On the other hand, it is possible to stun the enemy with the initial thrust but not kill them with the retraction. The taunt is sufficiently fast that you should be able to taunt again before the first thrust's stun wears off.
  • Being such a fast taunt, you can use it to kill distracted enemies or enemies that you suspect are charging towards your position, perhaps around tight corners.

Cooperative Class Strategies

Leaderboard class scout.png Scout

Cooperating with a Scout is a bit unorthodox due to your completely different fighting styles. Despite this, there is still some chemistry to be found with a friendly Scout.

  • If a Scout is using the Fan O'War, your Bushwacka will score critical hits on an enemy marked for death.
  • You provide a great distraction for the Scout. If enemies are reluctant to cross open areas because of you, they will begin using alternate routes to attack, which allows the Scout to more easily ambush them.
  • If an enemy Engineer is using the Gunslinger, destroying his mini-Sentry Guns from a distance with your Sniper Rifle can help a Scout tremendously.
  • The combination of Jarate with the bleeding effect of a Scout's Boston Basher, Three-Rune Blade, Wrap Assassin, or Flying Guillotine can quickly kill weaker classes and severely weaken bulkier ones.
  • When using the Huntsman, you will generally fight closer to the frontlines. A Scout can provide a good distraction, giving you more time to pick your targets.
  • Regardless of the above tactics, a Scout will generally be too far away for you to help him much due to the different natures of your classes; a Scout is helpless at long range, while a Sniper is worst at close range. Unless you are sure that you can fight in the frontlines, it's best to find another class to team up with instead.

Leaderboard class soldier.png Soldier

The Soldier is a bulky class that can provide excellent protection for you and is a great distraction. While there is not much direct help you can do for him, there are some situational advantages you should keep in mind.

  • The Soldier's overwhelming power and presence in a battle means he, like the Heavy, will be the center of attention in most circumstances. Using this knowledge, you can start inconspicuously eliminating classes in the backlines such as Medics, other Snipers and Heavies.
  • Due to the Rocket Launcher's large splash radius and high damage, Soldiers are excellent at protecting Snipers from the threats of Scouts and Spies before they can even approach.
  • Use Jarate when working with a Soldier, the Mini-Crits rewarded makes the Soldier's own explosive damage even more effective.
    • Furthermore, extinguishing a Soldier who is on fire doesn't have to retreat for health as early, which strengthens your team's next push.
  • Enemy Pyros can prevent a Soldier from doing maximum damage due to their airblast. Take them out to allow the Soldier more liberal use of his Rocket Launcher.
    • If both your Soldier and you are constantly harassed by Pyros, consider equipping the Darwin's Danger Shield and seeking protection from a different class, such as an Engineer or Heavy.
  • Just like you, the Soldier is quite effective at suppressing fire from enemy Snipers at long range. He can fire rockets at common Sniper spots, distracting them enough to allow you to finish them off, or by outright killing them.
  • Soldiers who use the B.A.S.E. Jumper are sitting ducks for any class with accurate hitscan, or straightforward projectiles. As such, sniping those who attempt to target the parachuting Soldier will allow him to traverse the skies more safely and cause destruction from unexpected angles.
  • A Soldier using the Battalion's Backup, when activated, can make it much easier for you to take out an enemy Sniper, as you will be immune to Critical hits, making it impossible for him to headshot you.
  • Enemy Snipers can be a detriment to an actively jumping Soldier. As you are one of the most effective counters to other Snipers, killing them will make a Soldier's life much easier.
  • The Huntsman changes the Sniper's playstyle similarly to that of the Soldier's, allowing you to coordinate in the same locations and with similar strategies for maximum damage potential.
    • For instance, a fully charged Huntsman headshot combined with a close-range rocket will kill even a fully overhealed Heavy.

Leaderboard class pyro.png Pyro

A Pyro can eliminate the risk of getting backstabbed due to their excellent Spy-checking ability, allowing you to snipe without having to constantly watch your back. Additionally, your inherent role of priority elimination allows you to keep your Pyro around by killing the classes that want them dead the most.

  • As with the Scout, the fear of a Sniper will make enemies avoid open areas, which allows the Pyro to more easily ambush them. This is especially effective when the Pyro is using the Backburner.
  • Combining Jarate with afterburn can be extremely powerful and will severely weaken even some of the most resilient classes in a matter of seconds.
  • Due to the Pyro's effective range being so small, they are a good target for long-range harassment from enemy Snipers or Engineers and their Sentry Guns. Killing these threats goes a long way towards protecting your Pyros when needed.
  • A Pyro can light your Huntsman arrows on fire. This is especially effective when you are fighting close to the frontlines, as the Pyro can constantly keep your arrows lit up.
  • A Pyro can use their Flare Gun to harass enemy Snipers, making it easier for you to take them out.

Leaderboard class demoman.png Demoman

Like the Soldier, the Demoman is a bulky class that can protect you with his explosive ordnance. You also can be great protection for the Demoman in certain situations.

  • When the Demoman is using the B.A.S.E. Jumper be sure to protect him, as he is an easy target when descending, especially for enemy Snipers.
  • If possible, take out any enemy's Scottish Resistance or Quickiebomb Launcher stickybombs with your Sniper Rifle or SMG, as they can destroy your Demoman's own stickies.
  • You provide good long range assistance to a Demoman, as he lacks any hitscan weaponry. Focus on targets that are outside the Demoman's effective range.
  • Do not "steal" sure kills from a Demoman who is using the Half-Zatoichi, as he will then be unable to put it away without suffering 50 HP of damage.
  • You can greatly assist a Demoman in taking out an enemy Sentry nest. Taking out the Engineer with your Sniper Rifle makes sure he can't repair or haul his buildings while the Demoman destroys them.

Leaderboard class heavy.png Heavy

The Heavy is an important class in the sense that he is capable of a fearsome level of defense to both yourself and your allied Medics. Therefore, it is in your best interest to protect them wherever possible. On the opposite side, the Heavy also is great at protecting you from the average threats that can give Snipers a rough time.

  • Eliminating enemy Snipers is of utmost importance when supporting a friendly Heavy. The Heavy is a slow class with a large hitbox, making him a juicy target for a Sniper. This is especially true when the Heavy is using the Brass Beast, which decreases Heavy's already slow movement speed while spun up down to a crawl.
  • The Heavy's firepower and obvious, intimidating presence will usually draw lots of enemy fire to him. This allows you to pick your targets more carefully without having to worry too much about incoming fire.
  • The Heavy's Sandvich can both extinguish and heal you in cases where you cannot reach a health pack in time before burning to death from afterburn.
  • If you are close to the frontlines with a Heavy and facing a group of opponents, try to hit all of them with Jarate, or tag them with the Sydney Sleeper. The Heavy can then easily deal with them with his Minigun.
  • The Heavy excels at killing any opponents that face him head-on. This means classes like the Scout and Pyro will have a rough time reaching you without going through your Heavy buddy first.
  • Although the Heavy boasts the most health of all the classes and is usually not likely to die due to afterburn, extinguishing him with Jarate is still a good idea, as it allows him to save his Sandvich for a more critical situation.
  • A Heavy using the Holiday Punch can make enemies laugh, allowing you to easily headshot them.
  • A Heavy using the Natascha can slow down enemies, which makes it easier for you to take them out.

Leaderboard class engineer.png Engineer

While working with an Engineer may not be overly effective, you can still help him keep his Sentry nest maintained.

  • While the Engineer himself is rather close-ranged in combat, his Sentry Gun has a very large effective hitscan range. This makes it very useful in deterring classes that attempt to ambush you while sniping.
  • The Spy causes trouble for both the Engineer and the Sniper, but their combined tools can make a Spy's life very difficult if used properly:
    • Make sure to protect your Engineer when he is using the Wrangler, as he may stand completely still while using it, making him an easier target for Spies to backstab.
    • If the Engineer's buildings are being sapped, throw Jarate close to the buildings to reveal the Spy.
  • If you have the SMG equipped, you can use it to destroy enemy sticky bombs that threaten your Engineer's buildings.
  • Taking out enemy Medics denies their ÜberCharge advantage, which goes a long way toward defending a Sentry nest.
  • The Engineer can be very effective in protecting you at close range, thanks to his Shotgun.
  • Jarate greatly increases the effectiveness of the Southern Hospitality. Its added fire vulnerability is mitigated and its bleed damage will be upgraded to mini-crits.
  • The Pomson 6000 can light your Huntsman arrows on fire.

Leaderboard class medic.png Medic

Protecting your Medic from the enemy Snipers or other similar threats should be your first priority at all times.

  • Since you will often be closer to the battle when using the Huntsman, Medics may often come to you for protection if their pocket has died or if a particularly dangerous foes like a Scout or Spy is chasing after him. Since you can more easily protect yourself from close range with the Huntsman and SMG, you can help deal with the threat quickly and allow the Medic to get back to the safety of beefier teammates.
    • While you are not a very efficient pocket for a Medic, the Huntsman paired with the Kritzkrieg can still do considerable damage in the hands of a skilled Huntsman Sniper. This also applies to the SMG or Cleaner's Carbine, though not to the same extent.
  • Always extinguish the Medic first with your Jarate. You will automatically gain back 20% of it's charge, so there is no reason to be greedy about using it.
  • You will generally be a fair distance away from your Medic, so try not to rely on his healing and remember the locations of health packs. If you absolutely need a Medic, go to him rather than have him come to you, as his distance from you means he may have to abandon the rest of the team to help you. If he is using the Crusader's Crossbow, stand completely still so he can quickly heal you from a distance and get back to his work.

Leaderboard class sniper.png Sniper

Two Snipers working together is extremely hazardous to the enemy team, as they will constantly have to avoid open areas, limiting their effectiveness.

  • If the other Sniper is using the SMG or Cleaner's Carbine, equip Jarate to improve its effectiveness.
  • You can work as a Sniper-Spotter pair: one can stay scoped in to keep his shot fully charged, while the other can stay unscoped to call out potential targets and keep watch for ambushes or Spies.
  • A pair of Snipers is especially problematic for a lone enemy Sniper, as he constantly has to worry about a headshot from both of you, limiting his effectiveness.
  • If the other Sniper is using the Sydney Sleeper you can equip the Bushwacka and have one Sniper drench enemies in Jarate while having the other finish them off.
  • If one Sniper is using the Huntsman, the other would do well to use a hitscan type of Primary to better deal with Snipers, or when faster ranged damage is needed.
  • Multiple Snipers can be very powerful when coordinated together, and cause massive chaos. However, two Snipers is more often than not enough, consider going a different class if you notice more than two Snipers on your team.

Leaderboard class spy.png Spy

You and the Spy fulfill a very similar role, albeit in a different fashion. Cooperating with a Spy can maximize the effectiveness of this role and instill fear and paranoia on the enemy team.

  • The Spy's intelligence can be very important when deciding where to position yourself. If the Spy alerts you to an enemy heading towards a specific chokepoint, you can reach that point before they do and surprise them with a charged (head)shot.
  • If you see a friendly Spy on fire, put him out with Jarate to keep his cover up. As a perk, if it's an enemy Spy, he'll be soaked in it, revealing him.
  • If your Spy's presence is revealed to the enemy team, use that opportunity to headshot as many opponents as you can while their attention is diverted.
  • Communication with a Spy is very important: you can wait until he is in position behind an enemy Pocket, take out theira Medic and then let him deal with the Pocket, or vice versa.
  • You can take out a whole Sentry nest with a Spy. Take out the Engineer with your Sniper Rifle and let the Spy take care of the buildings with his Sapper. If needed, supplement with shots from your Primary, or with the SMG's tight bullet spread.
  • Due to their nature of being single-target classes, the Sniper and Spy are best off going for different targets or trying to coordinate taking down 2 or 3 targets at a time. However, don't be afraid to abandon each other to retreat into a better situation rather than dying.

Sniping Priorities

Priorities vary and depend on the situation at the time. The following list should often, but not always, be used in order to specify which target is the first to take down. But if there is an easier shot to take, you should take the time to kill that target first. For example, if you have a large number of teammates battling a nearby Medic with a Heavy, sometimes taking out the Heavy first is the better choice since your teammates will be able to quickly control the area and kill the isolated Medic. If you shoot the Medic first, the Heavy might hold his ground by himself long enough for reinforcements to arrive, but it will only prevent them from using an ÜberCharge.

In order of priority, you should be taking out:

  1. Snipers
  2. Medics
  3. Demomen
  4. Heavies

The rest in relative priority order:

  1. Soldiers
  2. Engineers
  3. Pyros
  4. Spies
  5. Scouts
  • Snipers are on the top of the list because they deny your teammates the ability to cross an open space freely and present the biggest threat to you as another Sniper.
  • Medics are next because they have the ability to heal and activate an ÜberCharge. They can also assist the enemy forces by providing overheals in order to survive the brutal fight with your teammates. The Medics are a higher priority when they have an ÜberCharge ready.
  • Demoman's area denial is a formidable defense against your team; he can easily block your flank routes and choke points with Stickybombs, and his grenades can deal 400 damage in a few seconds. Taking him out destroys his stickies and prevents him from spamming explosives, allowing your team to move in.
  • Heavy's job is to block attacks intended for his teammates and grind down overextending enemies. Despite his large hitbox and slow movement speed, a good Heavy will duck and weave out of your shots, causing you to waste time charging shots to try to hit him. However, when he is killed the enemy team becomes more vulnerable to spam and flanks, and the enemy team will lose firepower.
  • Soldiers can be a dangerous threat if they take notice of your presence, and Direct Hit Soldiers are especially dangerous. They can strafe and fire rockets at you to prevent a clean shot, and good soldiers may even attempt to rocket jump toward you with the sole purpose of eliminating you. Taking them down will essentially save your teammates the possibility of being wiped out by the Soldier's rockets.
  • Without his buildings, Engineer doesn't pose much of a threat to you or your team.
  • Pyros have awkward-shaped heads, which can make it easier to kill them. They have the ability to easily destroy your team in close combat, so they must be taken down quickly and prior to their onslaught. Pyros equipped with the Flare Gun can set you aflame at range and greatly hinder your ability to snipe.
  • Spies are usually cloaked or disguised. If you see one, shoot him before he causes any trouble, but they will become hard to find as time goes on. Thus, you probably should not worry about them, though if you spot a Spy and did not see him die, call out his presence to your team and watch your back. Most of the time, he should not be a sniping priority.
  • Scouts move too fast in most cases for sniping, and you would be wasting your time and ammo trying to snipe Scouts.
