Equipping this weapon provides 50% damage resistance to fire, and 40% damage resistance to explosions. As a bonus, pressing alternate fire initiates a charge attack; the player will move forward at an extremely fast pace, but will be unable to change direction. The strength of the charge can be indicated in a meter in the HUD which changes color as it depletes, and by the rapidly glowing melee weapon. When at white or green, a melee attack will only do normal damage. At the yellow color, essentially half of the charge distance, striking will add Mini-Crit damage. Finally, moving the full distance and attacking at red will give it a full-power Critical hit. While charging, any enemy in your path will be subject to being bashed by your Chargin' Targe provided you do not end the charge by attacking with your melee weapon. The Targe cannot replenish its charge meter using resupply lockers, ammo crates, or through immediate death and instant respawn. When charging with a Grenade Launcher, the glowing animation will occur as with a melee weapon, yet it will only do normal damage upon firing and will not cancel the charge.

The Chargin' Targe is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Demoman. It is an antique, blood-stained wooden shield with a painted yellow cross and reinforced by an iron rim with bolts and a deadly center spike. A portion of the shield is missing and splintered.
Damage
Damage

Alternate fire initiates a charge attack, which deals damage on its own, or may be used in conjunction with another weapon.

* Charge Damage: 50 (if shield connects with enemy at the end of the charge) + 10 per head (up to 5 heads).

* The shield damage is affected by weapon damage spread, it is not a constant number.

* Fire Resistance: 50%

* Blast Resistance: 40%

* Charge Speed: 750 Hammer units/sec. (Approximately 2.5 times faster than 'Base' Speed)

** Charge Speed: 638 Hammer units/sec. with Scotsman's Skullcutter equipped. (Approximately 2.1 times faster than 'Base' Speed)

Function times
+
As it is a shield, simply equipping the Chargin' Targe provides the wearer with a passive +50% fire resistance and +30% explosive resistance. Additionally, the Chargin' Targe allows the Demoman to perform a Charging maneuver for 1.75 seconds (or 2.25 seconds if equipped with the Claidheamh Mòr), so long as the "Charge" bar in the HUD is completely full. Charging grants the Demoman a temporary burst of speed and sends him forward in an almost-fixed straight line. This charge allows the player to damage an opponent they come into direct contact with via a distance-scaling shield bash, and powers up the Demoman's next melee swing depending on the duration of his charge, with the maximum damage boost being a Critical hit (even on melee weapons that cannot deal random Critical hits). Charging also immediately removes the effects of afterburn, bleeding, Mad Milk, and Jarate.
* Charge Interval: 12 seconds

Times are approximate and determined by community testing.
+
Heads gathered by the Eyelander, Horseless Headless Horsemann's Headtaker or Nessie's Nine Iron increase the base damage of the bash by 5 damage each, at a maximum of 5 heads.

Trivia
 +
* The word targe generally refers to various types of infantry shields, often round in shape and notably used during the 13th to 16th centuries in the Scottish Highlands as the main means of personal defense in combat. It was decorated with designs possibly referring to the individual owner or their respective clan. Considering this, the front of the shield bears resemblance to the Team Fortress logo.
 +
* The Highlanders were famous for their charges. A single-handed claymore would be held in the right hand and used to stab the enemy, the targe would be strapped to the left arm and used to parry sword or bayonet blows, and a small dagger held reversed in the left hand and overlapping the targe would be used to slash.
 +
* Because the Chargin' Targe has a 50% fire damage reduction, it is possible for an overhealed Demoman to survive the Pyro's Hadouken taunt. The Hadouken deals 500 damage at point blank, which the Chargin' Targe halves to 250, and the Demoman's maximum health with overheal is 260.

This article is about the secondary weapon for Demoman. For the achievement with a similar name, see Demoman achievements.
“If I were to pick up this cowering-plate, I would have to put down my second sword,” a Scotsman thinks. “And surely that is madness.”
The Chargin’ Targe solves this riddle by turning the useless shield into a deadly weapon you can run at people with and then bludgeon to death.
Close Combat Kit publicity blurb

The Chargin' Targe is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Demoman. It is an antique, blood-stained wooden shield with a painted yellow cross and reinforced by an iron rim with bolts and a deadly center spike. A portion of the shield is missing and splintered.

Heads gathered by the Eyelander, Horseless Headless Horsemann's Headtaker or Nessie's Nine Iron increase the base damage of the bash by 5 damage each, at a maximum of 5 heads.

The Chargin' Targe is automatically given to any player who obtains 5 Demoman achievements.

Bugs

 • This weapon does not glow in the world view when Crit-boosted.
 • The Festive variant does not glow when Crit-boosted.
 • While equipped, if the wearer spectates another player in first-person mode while dead, upon respawning the shield appears where the spectated player was while they respawned. The shield is non-interactive and can be seen through walls, textures, and players.
 • The backpack image for the Chargin' Targe features the old and unused BLU skin for the weapon, rather than the yellow stripes the in-game version has.

Trivia

 • The word targe generally refers to various types of infantry shields, often round in shape and notably used during the 13th to 16th centuries in the Scottish Highlands as the main means of personal defense in combat. It was decorated with designs possibly referring to the individual owner or their respective clan. Considering this, the front of the shield bears resemblance to the Team Fortress logo.
 • The Highlanders were famous for their charges. A single-handed claymore would be held in the right hand and used to stab the enemy, the targe would be strapped to the left arm and used to parry sword or bayonet blows, and a small dagger held reversed in the left hand and overlapping the targe would be used to slash.
 • Because the Chargin' Targe has a 50% fire damage reduction, it is possible for an overhealed Demoman to survive the Pyro's Hadouken taunt. The Hadouken deals 500 damage at point blank, which the Chargin' Targe halves to 250, and the Demoman's maximum health with overheal is 260.
