The crit status of the melee weapon is indicated in a meter in the HUD which changes color as it depletes. For example, when the meter is white or green, a melee attack will only do normal damage. At the yellow color, essentially half of the charge distance, striking will add mini-crit damage. Finally, moving the full distance and attacking at red will give it a full-power critical hit. Additionally, disregarding distance charged, you still get a melee crit swing immediately after bashing into a player.

Time to get bluttered!
The Demoman

The Splendid Screen is a community-made secondary weapon for the Demoman. It is an iron shield spattered with blood, with four bosses in the cardinal directions and a larger boss in the middle.

The Splendid Screen's charge ability is more potent than the Chargin' Targe's; there is no minimum distance required to deliver damage with a shield bash, and a successful charge bash delivers 70% more damage. Like the Targe, heads gathered by the Eyelander, Horseless Headless Horsemann's Headtaker or Nessie's Nine Iron will increase the damage of the bash, at a maximum of 5 heads. However, the Splendid Screen only offers +20% fire resistance and +15% explosive resistance, instead of the Targe's +50% fire resistance and +40% explosive resistance.

This item has four different styles. These styles, titled "Classic", "Spike", "Arrow", and "Spike and Arrow", allow the Splendid Screen to bear a spike, an arrow, neither, or both, embedded in its face.

Damage

See also: Damage

Alternate fire initiates a charge attack, which deals damage on its own, or may be used in conjunction with another weapon.

  • Charge damage: 85 (if shield connects with enemy) + 17 per head (up to 5 heads).
  • Mini-crit charge damage: 115 (if shield connects with enemy) + 23 per head (up to 5 heads)
    • Both the shield regular and mini-crit damage are affected by weapon damage spread, meaning it is not a constant number.
  • Charge speed: 750 Hammer units/sec, or 250%.
