The Sydney Sleeper is an unlockable primary weapon for the Sniper. It is a single-shot pneumatic dart gun with an air tank in the stock, an attached scope and feathers tied to the barrel.

This weapon functions similarly to the Sniper Rifle; the weapon deals identical damage to the default weapon, but applies a Jarate effect upon a successful hit. Shots can be charged up whilst utilizing the scope; the higher the charge, the longer the Jarate effect. Upon reaching over 50% charge whilst scoped, a flashing Jarate icon will appear next to the charge meter, indicating that the shot will apply a Jarate effect onto an enemy target for 8 seconds.

The weapon's main flaw for precision Snipers is its inability to deal Critical hits with Headshots. Headshot kills will still register with the associated kill icon, but will not count as Critical hits.

Bugs

  • Jarate can be applied to ÜberCharged enemies, however they won't take damage.
  • The darts in the breast pocket do not completely cover the bullets they replace.
  • The Sydney Sleeper lacks a BLU skin; the darts on the weapon are always RED.
  • The darts in the Sniper's breast pocket occasionally clip through certain hats while taunting with melee.
  • The Sydney Sleeper clips through the Sniper's arms when he taunts with it.
  • It is possible to earn the achievement Dead Reckoning with the Sydney Sleeper by firing at the exact same moment an enemy Sniper fires at you, though the achievement claims you must use an arrow. However, this is infinitely harder than using the Huntsman to do this.

Trivia

  • Originally, the Sydney Sleeper was planned as a secondary weapon. [1]
  • Despite looking like a projectile shooter, the Sydney Sleeper is a hitscan weapon and does not leave a dart stuck into the target. However, unused darts can be found in game files (seen in the gallery below), which may mean that the Sydney Sleeper fired projectiles during beta testing. However, it is possible that these darts were intended to be used in a custom reloading animation that was eventually scrapped, as seen here (see first animation).
  • When Crit-boosted, any kills from Sydney Sleeper will be indicated as a critical headshot when aiming for an enemy's head.
