Jarate, the "Jar-based Karate", is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Sniper. It is a standard mason jar filled with urine that is capped with a screw-on lid.
The item is a thrown weapon; the jar breaks and the liquid is splashed over a short distance, either upon immediate contact with the world or another player. Enemies caught within the splash radius will be covered in the contents of the jar for 10 seconds. During this period, all incoming damage is registered as mini-crits, the player's view is tinted yellow, and they shed yellow droplets. The liquid can be removed by the player jumping into water or being healed for an extended period of time. This weapon has a 20-second cooldown before it can be used again as indicated in the HUD, and a ding will play to alert the player it has regenerated. As a projectile, it can be deflected by an enemy Pyro and can collide with a baseball hit by an enemy Scout.
Jarate has many other useful attributes. It can be used to reveal enemy Spies and short out their Cloaking devices, resulting in an automated voice response; a Spy who attempts to Cloak while under the effects of Jarate will be visible as a team-colored silhouette that reveals his current disguise, if any. The weapon also excels against enemies taking damage over time from afterburn or bleeding. Jarate-covered enemies even take mini-crits from Sentry Gun damage. Additionally, the weapon is not only limited to offensive purposes; it can also be used to extinguish burning teammates and the player.
The effects of Jarate are removed more quickly when being healed by a Medic or Dispenser.
Jarate is automatically given to any player who obtains 11 Sniper achievements.

Strange variant
A strange version of this weapon exists exclusively in the Series #27 crate. This weapon does not count kills; instead, its rank is based on the number of enemies coated in Jarate. Kill assists and friendly extinguishes will not contribute to the weapon's rank progression.

Bugs
- When using HWM models, their heads will not appear to glow. A mod had been created that fixes this issue.
- Jarate will cover targets within range if thrown at a spawn gate, even before it opens. This bug is also present with Mad Milk.
- If Jarate spends too much time in the air, it will shatter regardless of not colliding with something physical. Similarly, it will not shatter on impact with certain dynamic objects, such as the extending platforms of Nucleus.
- If a player throws Jarate at a Scout using Bonk! Atomic Punch and the Scout is hit by a melee weapon when he is in the air, the game will display the 'Mini-Crit!' (or 'Critical Hit' with the Bushwacka) alert, with the result of the Scout being launched an abnormally far distance.

Trivia
- Jarate's first appearance in the Team Fortress 2 universe was in the Meet the Sniper video, appearing as a seemingly incidental background object. On April 1, 2009 (Template:W), Jarate was revealed in a Sneak Preview as an unlockable weapon for the Sniper. Jarate was then visible in the Meet the Spy video in the background of the brawl between the Sniper and the Spy. On Day 7 of the Sniper vs. Spy Update, the final day of announcements, Jarate was revealed as the last Sniper unlockable.
- The effects of Jarate will be removed more quickly when being healed by a Medic or Dispenser.
- The word "Piss" and its variants in tense are swear-filtered to "Jarate" on the Steam Users Forums.
- If Colorblind mode is turned on, an icon is shown above Jarate-soaked players.
