Jarate (derived from the full name Jar-Based Karate) is a secondary weapon for the Sniper. It is a standard mason jar filled with a suspiciously yellow liquid, capped with a screw-on lid.
The item is a thrown weapon; the jar breaks and the liquid is splashed over a short distance, either upon immediate contact with the world or another player. Enemies caught within the blast will be covered in the contents of the jar for 10 seconds. During this period, all incoming damage is registered as a Mini-Crit, the player's view is tinted yellow and appears to swim, and they shed yellow droplets in the world view. The liquid can be removed by the player jumping into water or being healed for an extended period of time. This weapon has a 20 second cooldown before it can be used again, as indicated in the HUD. As a projectile, it can be reflected by an enemy Pyro.
Jarate has many other useful attributes. It can be used to short out the Spy's Cloaking Device, resulting in an automated voice response. The weapon works excellently against enemies taking damage over time from Afterburn or Bleeding. Jarate-covered enemies even take Mini-Crits from enemy Sentry Guns. Additionally, the weapon is not only limited to offensive purposes; It can be used to extinguish burning team-mates (yourself included) as well.

Previous Changes
- An option to toggle a Jarate icon above affected players is added, so colorblind players can indicate players "busy accepting a terrifying existence where they have no dignity"
- Self inflicted Mini-Crits are no longer possible with Soldiers and Demomen; rocket/grenade jumps are now possible when under Jarate effects
Trivia
- Jarate was supposedly invented by Saxton Hale himself after kicking a chair across the room in a frustrated rage.
- Jarate's first appearance in the Team Fortress 2 Universe was in the Meet the Sniper video, where it appeared as a seemingly incidental background object. On April 1, 2009 (April Fool's Day), Jarate was revealed in a Sneak Preview as an unlockable weapon for the Sniper. However, because of the day the preview was posted, fans were dubious as to whether the weapon was a joke or a legitimate unlock. Jarate was once again glimpsed before its official announcement on Day 6 of the Sniper vs. Spy Update. If the reader refreshed the page several times in a row, the background would change to show a Jarate jar flying towards the surprised, Ambassador-wielding Spy. The next day (Sniper vs. Spy Update Day 7), Jarate was finally revealed as the last Sniper unlockable.
- A similar martial art was revealed as a joke in one of the WAR! update's hidden pages called Larate, which granted the user a sped up version of Karate.
- If Jarate spends too much time airborne, it will shatter regardless of not colliding with something physical.
- The word "Piss" is swear-filtered to "Jarate" on the Steam Powered Users Forums.
- Jarate may Crit, resulting in a team-colored effect surrounding the jar. This, however, has no effect.
