Jarate, a jar-based karate*, is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Sniper. Jarate takes the form of jar of suspiciously yellow liquid that when thrown shatters and splashes upon impact.
Enemies caught in range of the weapon's splash will be tinted yellow and trail yellow drips to indicate they have been soaked, and suffer Mini-Crit damage when hurt for a short period of time. Additionally, Jarate can be used to short out Spies’ Cloaking devices. Enemies affected by Jarate can still be set on fire by weapons such as the Pyro's Flamethrower and Flare Gun, as well as the Sniper's Huntsman (assuming a friendly Pyro lit the Arrow). The fire will then stack with the Jarate, dealing Mini-Crit damage from both the weapon and its burning after-effects. Furthermore, Sentry Guns benefit from the Jarate by dealing Mini-Crit damage against the affected enemy.
Jarate may Crit, resulting in a team colored effect surrounding the jar as it is thrown. This however does not affect damage done to any victims, nor does it increase the duration of its effect on enemies.
The Jarate effect can be negated by jumping in water, which will wash it off.
Once Jarate is used, players will have to wait 10 seconds before it can be used again. This is shown by a charge meter in the HUD.
A thrown Jarate jar can be reflected by an enemy Pyro.
*Jarate is not affiliated with, nor a substitute for Karate.

Trivia
- Jarate's first appearance in the Team Fortress 2 Universe was in the Meet the Sniper video, where it appeared as a seemingly incidental background object. On April 1, 2009 (April Fool's Day), Jarate was revealed in a Sneak Preview as an unlockable weapon for the Sniper. However, because of the day the preview was posted, fans were dubious as to whether the weapon was a joke or a legitimate unlock. Jarate was once again glimpsed before its official announcement on Day 6 of the Sniper vs. Spy Update. If the reader refreshed the page several times in a row, the background would change to show a Jarate jar flying towards the surprised, Ambassador-wielding Spy. The next day (Sniper vs. Spy Update Day 7), Jarate was finally revealed as the last Sniper unlockable.
- The word "Piss" is swear-filtered to "Jarate" on the Steam forums.
- A similar martial art was revealed as a joke in one of the WAR! update's hidden pages called Larate, which granted the user a sped up version of Karate.
- Jarate does not need to hit a surface for the jar to explode. When thrown straight up or on a trajectory where it can reach its maximum arc, it will shatter mid-air after a small distance on the return trip downwards.
- Jarate bounces if it hits respawn doors.
- In the viewmodel, the Snipers hands clip into the jar while he is holding it. (See below image)
- It is Unknown how the Jarate fills up, when it is composed of urine which comes from the human body.
