Underscoring parts of Expiration Date, "Dapper Cadaver" is written similarly to a film score. It has a main theme, but the melody is closer to that of a thematic idea.
The track begins with the string section, lead by solo violin playing chromatic lines and accompanied by arco contrabass, pizzicato cello, viola, and violin, and glockenspiel filling gaps. Horns, trombones, and tuba enter to play a heavy, chromatic line to lead into the following section; a reprise of the beginning theme is played, with bass trombone and tuba added to emphasize pizzicato notes played by cello and contrabass. After a pause, timpani enters with low brass to heavily accent beats 1 and 3, strings play a strong arco melody, and violas play a 16th note ostinato outlining the chord structure. This continues until the end, where strings crescendo before dropping out to make space for a high violin sustain. Following that, a final hit is played by low strings, harpsichord, glockenspiel, and timpani on E.
