Underscoring the battle sequence in Expiration Date, "Rise of the Living Bread" is written similarly to many parts of film scores. It borrows elements from movie scores like heavy low brass parts, fast woodwind runs, and horn rips. However, it also contains several uses of the main theme's bass line, and trumpet shakes, which help integrate the track into the Team Fortress 2 universe.
The track begins with low string tremolos outlining Bb minor, with staggered brass entrances on Bb, Db, and D. A woodwind run leads the track into the first section, which includes punchy low brass, staccato trumpets, and a stream of eighth notes from strings, meanwhile the key alternates from F# minor to E minor. Horns and trombones trade held notes, and eventually an E diminished triad transitions to the Team Fortress 2 bass line played by strings and low brass. This ushers in a short section in G# minor, in which high strings repeatedly play up and down a natural minor scale. Following that, low strings and brass play a syncopated bass line, and trumpets and horns enter into a new section in C# minor. This section includes more eighths from strings and woodwinds, and trumpets and trombones attack held notes in contrast. Moving to Eb minor now, all brass instruments play a descending line - which leads into a legato melody played by flutes and clarinet now in the key of G minor, while trombones now play punchy offbeats. After the legato statement is made, the key center moves to A minor and horns take over playing melody. Low brass moves the track into a new section, now in F minor, as strings become more frantic and high brass ascends playing higher held notes. After another transition, flutes and clarinet return with their legato melody over a Db power chord, held by all brass and strings. Finally, the end section sees the ensemble chromatically ascend until a final, extremely dissonant chord.
