− | Mann. | + | Mann Co. Supply Crates are tool items obtainable through the item drop system. They are shown as open-style wooden shipping crates, wrapped in chains held with a large padlock. Mann Co. Supply Crates can be opened with the use of a Mann Co. Supply Crate Key. Anything unboxed using an untradable key becomes tradable on the date the key is supposed to become tradable. |
− | When | + | When a crate is opened, a model appearing similar to a Mann Co. Supply Munition drops from the top of the screen, the sides of the box falling and fading from view to reveal an item. The player receives one among a set of items which are listed in the crate's description and are dependent on its series. This item is announced to the server in a similar format to regular dropped items. After which, both the crate and the key are removed from the player's inventory and replaced with the uncrated item. |
+ | |||
+ | While Mann Co. Supply Crates are obtained through the item drop system, they do not add to the total cap of items a player can obtain each week. Furthermore, crate drops are completely independent from weapon or cosmetic drop rates. Scorched Crates and the Summer 2013 Coolers were exceptions as they were not dropped. Scorched Crates could have been the only item inside a Pile of Ash, and the Coolers could only be obtained through Summer Claim Checks.
+ | |||
+ | Though the notion and concept of a crate suggests that the contents should be predetermined, Robin Walker has confirmed the mechanics are such that item drop is determined at the point of opening the crate; moreover, items are not mapped to crates and thus there is no known distinction to be made between two crates of identical series.
+ | |||
+ | Due to laws intended to discourage gambling amongst minors, players located in Belgium and the Netherlands are not able to open Mann Co. Supply Crates; attempting to open a crate in these countries displays a window preventing them from doing so.

+ | Added in the Jungle Inferno Update, all cases from the Gun Mettle Update forward have a chance to drop one or more bonus items in addition to the cases' normal drop.

+ | ==== Possible bonus drops ====
+ | Case bonus drops | ||
+ | |||
+ | == Crates vs. Cases == | ||
+ | Crates and cases may appear to be fundamentally the same, but there are some very significant differences in how they operate that should be considered when deciding which to open. Most crates look exactly the same with a few exceptions, while cases have a unique model and color combination that make them easier to individually identify. All cases contain the word Case in their name, usually with an additional identifier that hints at what type of items it contains (Scream Fortress cosmetic cases are the exception). Crates usually contain the word Crate in their item name, however there are exceptions such as the Munition crates.
+ | |||
+ | ==== Using Keys ==== | ||
+ | A majority of crates can be unboxed with regular Mann Co. Supply Crate Keys, purchasable directly from the Mann Co. Store in game. The Robo Community Crate and End of the Line Community Crate are exceptions as they each require their own exclusive key to open; the Unlocked Crates do not require a key to open as they are purchased from the Mann Co. Store ready to open.
+ | |||
+ | A majority of cases each have a unique, exclusive key that can only be used on its matching case. The early weapon skin cases and the Invasion Community Update cases are exceptions, as each event had a single key that opened two cases; additionally, the Unlocked Winter 2016 Cosmetic Case does not require any key to open.
+ | |||
+ | ==== Graded Items ====
+ | | ||
+ | Crates generally use one of two methods to determine the odds of unboxing a certain item within their loot tables. The first method is making each item have the same odds as pulling every other item; this is usually how crates with only cosmetics in them work, such as the Refreshing Summer Cooler. The second method is to group items together and assign each group a portion of the overall odds, and then split that portion evenly between each item in the group. An example of this method can be seen with the odds of the Series #55 Crate; roughly 60% of the overall odds goes to the group of strange weapons, 30% to the group of strange parts, and the final 10% to the group of hats.
+ | |||
+ | After the Gun Mettle Update, cases introduced a new system of item grades, causing some items to be rarer than others. The grades from lowest to highest are: Civilian, Freelance, Mercenary, Commando, Assassin, and Elite. Each grade has its own color, and when moving up in grade, the color shifts from light blue on the bottom to red on the top. The higher the item's grade, the rarer it is. Cases that require keys only give Mercenary grade items or higher; Civilian and Freelance are only present on keyless War Paint cases that can be obtained by completing contracts. The odds of getting each grade of item in a case are: 80% Mercenary, 16% Commando, 3.2% Assassin, and 0.8% Elite. The percentage for each grade is divided up between all of the items that share the same grade; for example, if there are 2 Assassin grade items, each one has a 3.2% / 2 chance of being given, or 1.6%. There is a separate 10% chance for the unboxed item to be Strange, and a separate 0.66% chance for the crate to contain an Unusual item.
+ | |||
+ | ==== Unboxing Unusuals ====
+ | ===== Crates ===== | ||
+ | When a crate decides to give the player an Unusual, it abandons the normal list of items it can drop and selects a random hat from a list of non-graded craft hats (note that not all craft hats are included in this list), regardless of whether the crate normally offers hats at all. Unboxing an Unusual hat that's present in the crate's list is still possible by coincidence. Prior to Scream Fortress 2016, the list of unusual hats included items that did not necessarily have the hat equip region. These "misc." Unusuals were able to be equipped with other Unusuals which allowed players to equip more than one Unusual at a time. After Scream Fortress 2016, these items were removed from the list; whether this was done intentionally is unknown.
+ | |||
+ | Each Unlocked Cosmetic Crate has a separate list of Unusual hats that it will grant specific to the class that crate is associated with.
+ | |||
+ | The Unusual effect a hat will have is determined by the crate that was opened. The Unusual effect series is usually listed at the bottom of the crate's item description; if no series is specified it usually means that series #1, #2, and #3 are all obtainable from that crate. The Unusual page also lists which crates contain a specific Unusual series.
+ | |||
+ | ===== Cases ===== | ||
+ | |||
+ | Unusuals from cases are limited to only items within that specific case's loot table. For weapon skin or War Paint cases, all items within the case are able to have the Unusual quality. For cosmetic cases, only items with the or equip regions are eligible to be Unusual.
+ | |||
+ | The grade system functions exactly like before, only with fewer items for each grade. For example, the Blue Moon Case has 7 Commando grade items, but only 2 of them are hats (Starboard Crusader and Burning Question). Thus, in the event of an Unusual, the 16% chance of getting a Commando grade is divided between only those 2 items.
+ | |||
+ | Unusual effects from cosmetic cases include the standard Unusual series #1, #2, and #3, and may additionally include case-specific effects. Weapon skin and War Paint cases only contain 3 weapon Unusual effects: Hot, Cold, and Isotope. A 4th effect, Energy Orb, was previously available on the weapon skins from the Gun Mettle Update cases, but this effect has since been unofficially retired as of the Jungle Inferno Update.
+ | |||
+ | Valve may set a "Global Unusual List" during events (Summer, Scream Fortress, Smissmas). When global effects are active, cosmetic cases ignore their own Unusual effect list and only pick effects from the global list. After the event is over, the cosmetic case that was released with the event will continue to grant that event's effects, along with the Series #1, #2, and #3 effects. All other cases return to only offering their own effects. This limits the time that a new event's effects are able to be unboxed on older case's hats.
+ | |||
+ | Unusualifiers are a bonus drop item, its odds are completely separate from the odds of getting an Unusual hat or weapon. Thus, it is possible to unbox an Unusual and an Unusualifier in a single unbox. Unusualifiers have a higher chance of being unboxed than Unusual hats or weapons, and like all other bonus drop items, they are exclusive to cases.
+ | |||
+ | ==== War Paints ==== | ||
+ | War Paint and Decorated weapon cases use the same drop rates as weapon and cosmetic cases - 80% Mercenary, 16% Commando, 3.2% Assassin, and 0.8% Elite, with a separate 10% chance of being Strange and 0.66% chance of having an Unusual effect. War Paints (and Weapon Skins) also have different grades of wear; the odds of these are: 10% Factory New, 20% Minimal Wear, 40% Field-Tested, 20% Well-Worn, and 10% Battle Scarred.
+ | |||
+ | Some War Paint cases are earned by completing contracts and start at Civilian grade instead of Mercenary, and only go up to Commando instead of Elite. The relative odds remain the same: 80% Civilian, 16% Freelance, 3.2% Mercenary, and 0.8% Commando. Some of these cases may start at higher grades than Civilian but will still only go up to Commando. It is unknown how the odds are adjusted for these cases<!--, but it is likely that the top two odds are combined (a Freelance grade case would have a 4% chance for a Commando instead of 0.8%)-->. All of these cases do not give Strange or Unusual quality War Paints.

This is purely a visual glitch for the player opening the crate, the in-game chat message is still sent to the server, and the player has their item(s) in their backpack when they close the animation.

Mann Co.
When a crate is opened, a model appearing similar to a Mann Co.
While Mann Co. Supply Crates are obtained through the item drop system, they do not add to the total cap of items a player can obtain each week. Furthermore, crate drops are completely independent from weapon or cosmetic drop rates.[1] Scorched Crates and the Summer 2013 Coolers were exceptions as they were not dropped. Scorched Crates could have been the only item inside a Pile of Ash, and the Coolers could only be obtained through Summer Claim Checks.
Though the notion and concept of a crate suggests that the contents should be predetermined, Robin Walker has confirmed the mechanics are such that item drop is determined at the point of opening the crate; moreover, items are not mapped to crates and thus there is no known distinction to be made between two crates of identical series.
Due to laws intended to discourage gambling amongst minors, players located in Belgium and the Netherlands are not able to open Mann Co. Supply Crates; attempting to open a crate in these countries displays a window preventing them from doing so.

Bonus drops
Added in the Jungle Inferno Update, all cases from the Gun Mettle Update forward have a chance to drop one or more bonus items in addition to the cases' normal drop.[2]
Possible bonus drops
Crates vs. Cases
Crates and cases may appear to be fundamentally the same, but there are some very significant differences in how they operate that should be considered when deciding which to open. Most crates look exactly the same with a few exceptions, while cases have a unique model and color combination that make them easier to individually identify. All cases contain the word Case
in their name, usually with an additional identifier that hints at what type of items it contains (Scream Fortress cosmetic cases are the exception). Crates usually contain the word Crate
in their item name, however there are exceptions such as the Munition crates.
Using Keys
A majority of crates can be unboxed with regular Mann Co.
A majority of cases each have a unique, exclusive key that can only be used on its matching case. The early weapon skin cases and the Invasion Community Update cases are exceptions, as each event had a single key that opened two cases; additionally, the Unlocked Winter 2016 Cosmetic Case does not require any key to open.
Graded Items
Crates generally use one of two methods to determine the odds of unboxing a certain item within their loot tables.
After the Gun Mettle Update, cases introduced a new system of item grades, causing some items to be rarer than others.
Unboxing Unusuals
Crates
When a crate decides to give the player an Unusual, it abandons the normal list of items it can drop and selects a random hat from a list of non-graded craft hats (note that not all craft hats are included in this list), regardless of whether the crate normally offers hats at all. Unboxing an Unusual hat that's present in the crate's list is still possible by coincidence. Prior to Scream Fortress 2016, the list of unusual hats included items that did not necessarily have the hat
equip region. These "misc." Unusuals were able to be equipped with other Unusuals which allowed players to equip more than one Unusual at a time. After Scream Fortress 2016, these items were removed from the list; whether this was done intentionally is unknown.
Each Unlocked Cosmetic Crate has a separate list of Unusual hats that it will grant specific to the class that crate is associated with.
The Unusual effect a hat will have is determined by the crate that was opened. The Unusual effect series is usually listed at the bottom of the crate's item description; if no series is specified it usually means that series #1, #2, and #3 are all obtainable from that crate. The Unusual page also lists which crates contain a specific Unusual series.
Cases
Unusuals from cases are limited to only items within that specific case's loot table. For weapon skin or War Paint cases, all items within the case are able to have the Unusual quality. For cosmetic cases, only items with the Hat
or Whole Head
equip regions are eligible to be Unusual.
The grade system functions exactly like before, only with fewer items for each grade. For example, the Blue Moon Case has 7 Commando grade items, but only 2 of them are hats (Starboard Crusader and Burning Question). Thus, in the event of an Unusual, the 16% chance of getting a Commando grade is divided between only those 2 items.
Unusual effects from cosmetic cases include the standard Unusual series #1, #2, and #3, and may additionally include case-specific effects.
Valve may set a "Global Unusual List" during events (Summer, Scream Fortress, Smissmas).
Unusualifiers are a bonus drop item, its odds are completely separate from the odds of getting an Unusual hat or weapon. Thus, it is possible to unbox an Unusual and an Unusualifier in a single unbox.[3] Unusualifiers have a higher chance of being unboxed than Unusual hats or weapons, and like all other bonus drop items, they are exclusive to cases.
War Paints
War Paint and Decorated weapon cases use the same drop rates as weapon and cosmetic cases - 80% Mercenary, 16% Commando, 3.2% Assassin, and 0.8% Elite, with a separate 10% chance of being Strange and 0.66% chance of having an Unusual effect. War Paints (and Weapon Skins) also have different grades of wear; the odds of these are: 10% Factory New, 20% Minimal Wear, 40% Field-Tested, 20% Well-Worn, and 10% Battle Scarred.
Some War Paint cases are earned by completing contracts and start at Civilian grade instead of Mercenary, and only go up to Commando instead of Elite. The relative odds remain the same: 80% Civilian, 16% Freelance, 3.2% Mercenary, and 0.8% Commando. Some of these cases may start at higher grades than Civilian but will still only go up to Commando. It is unknown how the odds are adjusted for these cases. All of these cases do not give Strange or Unusual quality War Paints.

Unused content
- An unused 'Special Crate' backpack icon exists in the game files.
- Two skins for Weapons Cases are present. One lacks any distinguishing features while the other one has the TF2 Matchmaking logo.
- Additionally, the unused backpack item images show that the former skin would simply have a patch applied to it DIY-style for a Craftsmann Weapon Case and the latter skin is named
weapons_case_04_gentlemen
, suggesting it would have been used for a Gentlemanne's Weapon Case. - The backpack image for the ordinary Weapon Case (simply named
weapons_case
) was later replaced with that of a Winter 2018 War Paint Case which also went unused, likely because no war paints were released in the Smissmas 2018 update.- It was replaced again in the Scream Fortress 2021 update with a copy of the Scream Fortress XIII War Paint Case image.
- Additionally, the unused backpack item images show that the former skin would simply have a patch applied to it DIY-style for a Craftsmann Weapon Case and the latter skin is named
Bugs
- Attempting to open a crate while disconnecting from a server results in the timer being set to 1,000 seconds (16 minutes and 40 seconds).
- If a player is dead in game, opens a crate, and then respawns before the crate animation plays, the player sees a loop of the crate opening animation with no item inside. This is purely a visual glitch for the player opening the crate, the in-game chat message is still sent to the server, and the player has their item(s) in their backpack when they close the animation.
Trivia
- Although Valve modeled the padlocked chain for the icon, the padlocked box cannot be found in the game files; its textures, however, can be found. The crate itself uses a model that appears to be the same as
models/props_hydro/barrel_crate_half.mdl
.- Almost inversely, the model for the Supply Munitions variation can be found in the game files, but two of the three textures are not included.
- Prior to the Two Cities Update, crates with expiration dates (such as Festive Winter Crates and the Refreshing Summer Cooler Crate) were not actually removed from player backpacks until Team Fortress 2 was started up.
- Community Crate cards and spaces are used in Monopoly: Team Fortress 2 instead of Community Chest.
