The Degreaser is a craftable primary weapon for the Pyro. It appears to be comprised of a gas pump, car muffler and exhaust pipe, fire extinguisher, and stove top burner, all attached to function as a Flamethrower.

This weapon reduces the delay caused by weapon switching by 65% for all weapons, allowing easier strategic use of weapon combos such as with the Axtinguisher. In return, the Degreaser deals 25% less afterburn damage against enemies. Unlike the Pyro's previous unlockable primary weapon, the Backburner, this weapon retains the compression blast ability.

* Flame damage is identical to the Flamethrower.

* Base damage is based upon range (or, by extension, particle lifetime) and is rounded at the end of all calculations (after Critical multipliers, etc).

** There is very slight variability, ±0.08 per particle, because some particles are at an angle. This makes for slightly varying travel times.

** Damage-Per-Second values assume all particles find victims.

** Base damage changes over particle lifetime, instead of distance from player. All other weapons affected by distance measure from player to player.

* Critical hit: 3× base damage, then round to nearest whole.

** Mini-Crit: 1.35× base damage, then round to nearest whole.

* Afterburn: 2 damage every 0.5 seconds (3 on every 4th tick), 45 damage in total.

** Mini-Crit: 4 damage every 0.5 seconds for 10 seconds, 80 damage in total.

Trivia
Trivia
*The Pyro's Degreaser is most likely a reference to the emulsifying agents used to remove heavy oils and grease which are sometimes referred to as "Degreaser". Firstly, when mishandled with heat, degreasers (especially engine degreasers) are known to cause severe burn or injury due to their highly flammable and explosive nature, much like the Pyro's weapon. Secondly, degreasing items such as engines, gears, stoves, etc. will make them run more efficiently and possibly faster by removing unneeded gunk. The degreasing nature of the Pyro's weapon may therefore explain why it and all weapons used alongside it can be switched faster.
+
* Degreasers are emulsifying agents used to remove heavy oils and grease; since flames consume fats easily, it can be called a literal type of "degreaser".
*Because of the faster draw time, the taunt glitch is still possible.
+
** Degreasers are a notorious fire hazard, and through the 1960s, gasoline stored in covered basins was the standard degreaser used when repairing cars at gas stations.
*If one counts the kill icons given by compression blasts, the Flamethrower and Degreaser are the weapons that possess the most kill-icons.

*The Degreaser's kill icon can only be seen when destroying buildings. When killing enemies it uses the default flame thrower kill icon.

A vintage gas station pump combined with a car muffler and an antique fire extinguisher provide the Pyro with all of his burning needs. A portable stove top burner provides 4 ignition sources.
Degreaser publicity blurb

The Degreaser is a community-created primary weapon for the Pyro. It is a makeshift flamethrower comprised of a gas pump, a car muffler, an exhaust pipe, a team-colored fire extinguisher, and a stove top burner.

The Degreaser reduces the delay caused by weapon switching from or to this weapon. Specifically, it takes 60% less time to switch to the Degreaser and 30% less time to switch away, which facilitates strategic use of weapon combos. However, damage caused by afterburn damage is reduced by 66%.

The Degreaser, like the Flame Thrower, Backburner, Rainblower, and Dragon's Fury, has the compression blast ability. However, using the compression blast costs 25 ammo instead of the default Flame Thrower's 20.

Afterburn reduces healing and shield resists from a Medi Gun by 20%.

The kill icon for the Degreaser was contributed by Psyke .

Bugs

  • Rarely, when the Degreaser is turned off during full crits, the flame effect can still be seen. Unlike a similar bug with the Minigun, the "flame" can only be seen by the player.
  • The attribute -66% afterburn damage penalty also applies to any reflected projectile's afterburn such as Flare Gun, despite it normally doing full afterburn damage.
  • If the Degreaser is deployed for less than half of a second, the player does not receive the holster bonus after switching off to another weapon.
  • The Degreaser can be inspected while being fired.

Trivia

  • Degreasers are emulsifying agents used to remove heavy oils and grease; since flames consume fats easily, it can be called a literal type of "degreaser".
    • Degreasers are a notorious fire hazard, and through the 1960s, gasoline stored in covered basins was the standard degreaser used when repairing cars at gas stations.
