In most circumstances, the [[Flamethrower]] is a much better choice for targets in melee range. The Fire Axe, however, is typically used on unaware enemies and for humiliation purposes as it has a high [[Critical hit]] chance. The Critical hit animation for the Fire Axe is a swift right to left horizontal swing.

*Although the [[Pyro]]'s primary and secondary weapons are held in a right-handed grip,  the Fire Axe, [[Axtinguisher]], [[Homewrecker]], and [[Powerjack]] are all held in a left-handed grip. This may mean that the Pyro is ambidextrous, but it is most likely a developer oversight.

*Although swinging the Fire Axe in player view causes different animations to play, the world view shows the Pyro always using an overhead swing even on Critical hits. This is due to an old patch which provided the Pyro with more hit animations; previously the Pyro would only swing the Fire Axe vertically down.
