'''Jarate''', a jar-based karate*, is an unlockable [[secondary]] weapon for the [[Sniper]]. It takes the form of a jar of suspiciously yellow liquid with a screw-on cap.

Enemies caught in range of the weapon's splash will be tinted yellow and trail yellow drips to indicate they have been soaked. These enemies will suffer [[Critical hits#Mini=crits|Mini-Crit]] damage when hurt, until the effect wears off. It can be washed off should the player jump into [[water]], or is healed continually by a [[Medic]]. Once Jarate is used, the Sniper will have to wait 20 seconds before it can be used again. This is shown by a charge meter in the [[HUD]].

Jarate has many other useful attributes. It can be used to short out a [[Spy]]'s [[Cloak]]ing device, causing them to emit a [[Spy responses#Hit by Jarate or Mad Milk|specific response]]. Currently the Spy is the only enemy to react vocally to this weapon. Additionally, enemies affected by Jarate can be set on [[fire]] by weapons such as the Pyro's [[Flamethrower]] and [[Flare Gun]], as well as the Sniper's [[Huntsman]] (assuming a friendly Pyro lit the [[Arrow]]). The fire will then stack with the Jarate, dealing Mini-Crit damage from both the weapon and its burning after-effects. Furthermore, [[Sentry Gun]]s benefit from the Jarate by dealing Mini-Crit damage against the affected enemy. Note that this weapon cannot effect [[ÜberCharge]]d enemies.
+
'''Jarate''', the "Jar-based Karate", is an unlockable [[Weapons#snipersecondary|secondary weapon]] for the [[Sniper]]. It is a standard glass mason jar filled above half-way with the Sniper's urine, capped with a screw-on lid. In the Festive version, the jar is replaced with a corked glass bottle, labeled with a holiday-themed sticker upon which "Merry [[Smissmas]] Mate!" is written in cursive font, and the bottleneck wrapped with a team-colored bow.

In contrast with its offensive capabilities, Jarate can also be used to douse allies on fire. Bonus points are awarded to players who do so.
+
The item is a thrown weapon; the jar breaks and the liquid is splashed over a short distance, either upon immediate contact with the world or another player. Enemies caught within the {{tooltip|200 [[Hammer unit]]s|381 cm, or 12.5 feet}} splash radius are [[soaked]] in the contents of the jar for 10 seconds. During this period, all incoming [[damage]] is registered as [[Critical hits#mini-crits|mini-crits]]. The victim's view is tinted a watery yellow, and they shed yellow droplet particle effects. The effect duration can be reduced through continuous [[healing]], or can be removed instantly by jumping into [[water]] or touching a [[Respawn#Resupply|resupply cabinet]]. This weapon normally has a 20-second cooldown before it can be used again as indicated in the [[Heads-up display|HUD]], and a ding plays to alert the player it has regenerated.

Normally Jarate will break and splash upon contact with any surface. In some instances, however, it will behave much like other [[projectile]]s and bounce off. This can be seen when it is thrown at doors and [[Payload|bomb carts]]. Also, like a projectile, the jar can be [[Compression Blast|reflected]] by an enemy [[Pyro]].
+
The Jarate also has several other abilities that are not found in its in-game description. It can be used to reveal enemy [[Spy|Spies]] and short out their [[cloak]]ing devices, resulting in an automated [[Spy responses#Hit by Gas Passer, Jarate, Mad Milk, Mutated Milk, or Self-Aware Beauty Mark|voice response]]; a Spy who attempts to Cloak while under the effects of Jarate is visible as a [[team]]-colored silhouette that reveals his current [[disguise]], if any. Jarate-covered enemies take mini-crits from [[afterburn]], [[bleeding]], [[Sentry Gun]]s, and other sources of damage that normally cannot crit. Additionally, the weapon is not limited to offensive use, as it can be used to extinguish afterburn on oneself and teammates; the user and teammates are immune to the negative effects of Jarate, whereas enemies cannot benefit from its positive effects. If a Sniper successfully extinguishes a teammate with the Jarate, its cooldown is lowered by 20%, to 16 seconds instead of the normal 20-second cooldown. As a [[Projectiles|projectile]], the Jarate can be [[Compression blast|deflected]] by an enemy [[Pyro]]. Like other hand-thrown [[projectile]]s, the Jarate cannot be thrown underwater.

Jarate may [[Crit]], resulting in a team colored effect surrounding the jar as it is thrown. This however does not affect damage done to any victims, nor does it increase the duration of its effect on enemies.
+
When playing in [[Multiplayer options#Advanced multiplayer options|Colorblind mode]], a translucent Jarate icon is shown above any player who is currently sodden with the weapon.

<nowiki>*</nowiki><small>Jarate is not affiliated with, nor a substitute for Karate.</small>

Wreak havoc on your opponent's mental state, psychological well-being and trust in the inherent goodness of his fellow man!
Jarate publicity blurb

Jarate, the "Jar-based Karate", is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Sniper. It is a standard glass mason jar filled above half-way with the Sniper's urine, capped with a screw-on lid. In the Festive version, the jar is replaced with a corked glass bottle, labeled with a holiday-themed sticker upon which "Merry Smissmas Mate!" is written in cursive font, and the bottleneck wrapped with a team-colored bow.

The item is a thrown weapon; the jar breaks and the liquid is splashed over a short distance, either upon immediate contact with the world or another player. Enemies caught within the 200 Hammer units splash radius are soaked in the contents of the jar for 10 seconds. During this period, all incoming damage is registered as mini-crits. The victim's view is tinted a watery yellow, and they shed yellow droplet particle effects. The effect duration can be reduced through continuous healing, or can be removed instantly by jumping into water or touching a resupply cabinet. This weapon normally has a 20-second cooldown before it can be used again as indicated in the HUD, and a ding plays to alert the player it has regenerated.

The Jarate also has several other abilities that are not found in its in-game description. It can be used to reveal enemy Spies and short out their cloaking devices, resulting in an automated voice response; a Spy who attempts to Cloak while under the effects of Jarate is visible as a team-colored silhouette that reveals his current disguise, if any. Jarate-covered enemies take mini-crits from afterburn, bleeding, Sentry Guns, and other sources of damage that normally cannot crit. As a projectile, the Jarate can be deflected by an enemy Pyro. Like other hand-thrown projectiles, the Jarate cannot be thrown underwater.

When playing in Colorblind mode, a translucent Jarate icon is shown above any player who is currently sodden with the weapon.

Jarate is automatically given to any player who obtains 11 Sniper achievements.

January 7, 2016 Patch

  • Changed attribute:
    • [Undocumented] Updated Jarate 20% cooldown reduction when used to extinguish a burning teammate from neutral attribute to positive attribute.

December 21, 2016 Patch (Smissmas 2016)

  • Fixed not being able to transfer Strange stats between versions of Jarate.

Bugs

  • When thrown at a Sentry Buster, the "bomb" part of the model is not tinted yellow; only the legs are tinted.

Trivia

  • Jarate's first appearance in the Team Fortress 2 universe was in the Meet the Sniper video of June 7, 2008, appearing as a seemingly incidental background object, although attention is drawn to it and the purpose of that time-lapse scene is to show the camping, coffee-drinking Sniper filling urine jars.
  • The word "Piss" and its variants in tense are swear-filtered to "Jarate" on the Steam Users Forums.
  • Jarate is frequently implied to be a jar of urine, although it is only ever explicitly proclaimed to be in the April Fools sneak preview.
    • In the time-lapse scene of Meet the Sniper, at 0:56, the Sniper grimaces in lower abdominal discomfort, after which the next frames show Sniper placing the first of several jars filling with urine.
    • The Insult states that Sniper's kidneys grew triple their normal size from Saxton Hale's Jarate pills and shows Sniper with his Jarate jars in a bathroom.
    • The second Charles Atlas parody, Hey Sniper, states that the fluid comes from his body.
