Strange quality is an item quality found on weapons obtained from unlocking Mann Co. Supply Crates of certain series. Introduced in the Über Update on 6, Strange weapons track kills and record them as an item attribute, allowing the count to be viewed by players. The weapon is then awarded a rank as the recorded count increases, with the rank affixed to the beginning of the item's name. Some Strange weapons track another action instead of kills, such as kill assists (see Notes below for exceptions). Additionally, some weapons have a second count to track other associated actions, such as Sentry Gun kills; however, the secondary count does not contribute toward rank progress. Each time the player achieves a new rank, it is announced to all players on the server with a message in the chat box; A notification pop-up also appears only for the player the weapon belongs to.

The Spirit Of Giving is an all-class miscellaneous item with the Strange quality, introduced during the Australian Christmas 2011 event. It tracks and ranks up based on gifts given with the Secret Saxton and Pile o' Gifts items. Uniquely, it has its own list of ranks, with lower thresholds between them. In its initial state, it does not display the Strange prefix, but does retain the text coloring. All players were awarded the Spirit Of Giving along with a Secret Saxton to all premium players at the time of the update. The update also introduced Festive weapons: reskins of a number of Stock weapons, braided with flickering Christmas lights. Festive weapons could be obtained in either Strange or Unique quality.

Strange quality is an item quality available for weapons, cosmetics, and taunts. Methods of obtaining Strange items include:
 +

 +
* Unlocking a Mann Co. Supply Crate containing the item.
 +
* Using a Strangifier or Strange Bacon Grease on a compatible item.
 +
* Earning Botkiller or Australium weapons from Mann Up mode.
 +
* Redeeming a Strange War Paint for a Decorated weapon.
 +
* Acquiring preexisting items through Trading or the Steam Community Market.
 +

 +
Strange weapons track kills or other various events (see Unique Rank Methods below for exceptions), and records them as an item attribute, allowing the count to be viewable by other players and the owner. Cosmetic items with the Strange quality track the number of points scored while wearing the item. Strange items are awarded new ranks as their counters increase, with the rank affixed to the beginning of the item's name. Each time a Strange item reaches a new rank, the event is announced to all players on the server with a message in the chat box. A notification pop-up appears, accompanied by a sound, but only for the player the Strange item belongs to. A Strange item can have a maximum of 4,294,967,295 on the counter, the unsigned 32-bit integer limit.
 +

 +
Decorated weapons with the Strange quality have a "Stat Clock" placed on the weapon that increments in real-time.
 +

 +
Strange Parts (a type of tool that can track additional variables) can be added to many Strange quality items. A maximum of three parts can be added to a given item. They do not contribute toward rank progress for the item.

The Strange Part is a tool that can be used to track an additional variable on Strange weapons. A maximum of three variables can be added.
+
The Strange Count Transfer Tool allows points, both for the main counter and any applied parts, to be transferred between two Strange items of the same type.

The hexadecimal color code for Strange items is CF6A32.
+
Strange Filters can also be used to further limit the statistics that are tracked by the item to certain community-made maps.

Notes
Notes
* The following Strange items do not track kills, instead:
+
* Kills are counted together for classes that share the same Strange weapon or cosmetic.
** Mad Milk and Jarate tracks and ranks up based on the number of coated enemies, or "Sodden Victims".
+
* Killing a teammate while friendly fire is enabled increases the kill total with a Strange weapon by one.
** The Wrench, Gunslinger, and Jag track Sentry Gun kills, whether Wrangled or not, and standard melee kills, and rank up based on Sentry Gun kills.
+
* It is not possible to reset a Strange item's point/kill counter without also resetting the counters for any Strange parts that may be applied to the item.
*** The Southern Hospitality only tracks standard melee kills.
+
* Using a Name Tag changes the name of the Strange item, but the item still retains its rank and counters. The current rank is displayed under the name of the weapon in light grey text.
** The Medi Gun, Quick-Fix, and Kritzkrieg track ÜberCharges and kill assists;
+
* The following actions do not increase the total kill count for Strange weapons:
*** The Medi Gun and Quick-Fix rank up based on ÜberCharges deployed.
+
** Killing yourself with a Strange weapon.
*** The Kritzkrieg ranks up based on kill assists.
+
** Activating the cloak of a Spy who is using the Dead Ringer.
** The Razorback tracks and ranks up based on the number of Spies shocked by backstabbing it, or "Spies Shocked".
+
** Killing an enemy via environmental damage with the compression blast.
** The Sapper counts how many buildings have been destroyed by sapping them.
+
** Killing bots, whether it be player bots, or Mann vs. Machine robots (there is a Strange Part for this however).
** The Dead Ringer tracks and ranks up based on number of feigned deaths.
+
* Trading, selling a Strange item on the Steam Community Market, or using Gift Wrap on a Strange item causes its counter to reset to zero and its prefix to reset to Strange. Using Gift Wrap on a Strange item presents the player a warning to this effect.
** The Holiday Punch tracks how many people you have made laugh along with amount of kills.
+
** The item still tracks kills as normal after these actions.
* Killing a teammate while friendly fire is enabled will increase your kill total with that weapon by one, as though it were a normal kill.
+
* Taunts use generic rank names as opposed to cosmetic rank names.
*The following actions do not increase the total kill count for strange weapons:
+
* Points scored in Strange cosmetics only increase if there are at least two human players in the server.
** Activating the Cloak of a Spy who is using the Dead Ringer.
+
** Therefore, objectives such as pushing the Payload or capturing the flag, do not count if there is just one human player on the server.
** Any action involving bots.

** Killing yourself with a Strange weapon.

** Killing an enemy with a compression blast.

** Killing an enemy with a taunt. But Fencing kills will still increase the total kill count.

** Activating the Dead Ringer via environmental damage, such as fall damage.

* Kills are counted together for classes that share the same Strange weapon.

* Using a Name Tag will change the name of the Strange weapon, but the weapon will still retain its rank and counter. Its current rank is displayed under the name of the weapon in light grey text.

Bugs
* Counters do not update in-game when you inspect another player's Strange weapon on the Deathcam.

* If a Strange weapon goes up a rank, it will appear to have the original rank prefix when switching weapons until the player respawns.

* The Eyelander levels up only on kills, rather than total heads collected. Therefore killing someone with heads, such as another Demoman with the Eyelander (and all variants) or a Sniper with the Bazaar Bargain will only yield one kill.

* Killing yourself with the Wrangler while having one of Strange Wrenches equipped increases the counter.

*Destroying a building with a Revolver will increase the "buildings destroyed" count of the Sapper, regardless of whether the Sapper was placed on the building.

Strange quality is an item quality available for weapons, cosmetics, and taunts. Methods of obtaining Strange items include:

Strange weapons track kills or other various events (see Unique Rank Methods below for exceptions), and records them as an item attribute, allowing the count to be viewable by other players and the owner. Cosmetic items with the Strange quality track the number of points scored while wearing the item. Strange items are awarded new ranks as their counters increase, with the rank affixed to the beginning of the item's name. Each time a Strange item reaches a new rank, the event is announced to all players on the server with a message in the chat box. A notification pop-up appears, accompanied by a sound, but only for the player the Strange item belongs to. A Strange item can have a maximum of 4,294,967,295 on the counter,[1] the unsigned 32-bit integer limit.

Decorated weapons with the Strange quality have a "Stat Clock" placed on the weapon that increments in real-time.

Strange Parts (a type of tool that can track additional variables) can be added to many Strange quality items. A maximum of three parts can be added to a given item. They do not contribute toward rank progress for the item.

The Strange Count Transfer Tool allows points, both for the main counter and any applied parts, to be transferred between two Strange items of the same type.

Strange Filters can also be used to further limit the statistics that are tracked by the item to certain community-made maps.

The hexadecimal color code for Strange items is #CF6A32, a tuscan orange.

Unique Rank Methods

Certain Strange items do not level up via tracked kills, and instead level based on other criteria:

Notes

  • Kills are counted together for classes that share the same Strange weapon or cosmetic.
  • Killing a teammate while friendly fire is enabled increases the kill total with a Strange weapon by one.
  • It is not possible to reset a Strange item's point/kill counter without also resetting the counters for any Strange parts that may be applied to the item.
  • Using a Name Tag changes the name of the Strange item, but the item still retains its rank and counters. The current rank is displayed under the name of the weapon in light grey text.
  • The following actions do not increase the total kill count for Strange weapons:
  • Trading, selling a Strange item on the Steam Community Market, or using Gift Wrap on a Strange item causes its counter to reset to zero and its prefix to reset to Strange. Using Gift Wrap on a Strange item presents the player a warning to this effect.
    • The item still tracks kills as normal after these actions.
  • Taunts use generic rank names as opposed to cosmetic rank names.
  • Points scored in Strange cosmetics only increase if there are at least two human players in the server.
    • Therefore, objectives such as pushing the Payload or capturing the flag, do not count if there is just one human player on the server.
