Crafting es un sistema dentro del juego que permite a los jugadores crear elementos específicos, como un arma, sombrero o materiales de mayor elaboración usando elementos no deseados, o duplicados que han sido adquiridos normalmente a través del sistema de depósito de artículos. Para crear estos elementos, el jugador debe seguir planos explícitos, algunos de los cuales están inicialmente disponibles y otros que deben ser descubiertos por el jugador por medio de la experimentación. Después de seguir un plano de fabricación válido y desconocido, el jugador recibirá tanto el objeto en cuestión como el plano de fabricación, que será añadido a la lista de planos de fabricación conocidos. Si el jugador trata de crear un elemento sin plano correspondiente, será notificado de que no existe tal receta, y ningún elemento usado se perderá.

Notes
- The event hats and other hats/items of limited availability do not count toward the Rebuild Headgear recipe. These include Bill's Hat, the Ghastly Gibus, the Mildly Disturbing Halloween Mask, the Cheater's Lament, Max's Severed Head, the Alien Swarm Parasite, the Earbuds, the four service medals (Mercenary, Soldier of Fortune, Grizzled Veteran, and Primeval Warrior), and the Gentle Manne's Service Medal (unlike the other misc items, the Camera Beard, the Whiskered Gentleman and the Physician's Procedure Mask, which all can be crafted).
- Grenade, Building, PDA and Head Slot Tokens are listed in the items_game.txt file, as seen here, but none of these currently have blueprints. (Backpack example of the rare 'Head Slot Token'. Note that it does not have a backpack icon yet.)
- Three Camera Beards cannot be crafted into a Misc Token, despite the fact that the option to Fabricate Slot Token can be discovered when attempting to do so. The Camera Beards are not consumed, but the blueprint is discovered.
- Originally crafting items created the "PLAYERNAME has found: ITEMNAME" message in the server's public chat. This was later changed to "PLAYERNAME has crafted: ITEMNAME" to avoid confusion.
- Some cases have been reported of players "finding" scrap metal. This is most likely the cause of the player's internet connection and/or computer crashing after clicking the craft button. This means the items are used in the craft recipe, yet the result of the craft remains uncollected until the player dies in a server. Giving the "PLAYERNAME has found: METALTYPE", obviously giving the false impression to others that metal types can be found.
- On July 5, 2010, players crafting any item in the game were given the chance of finding 1 of 100 extremely rare items, a Golden Wrench. A series of times when a Wrench was designed to drop was utilized by Valve, and when a player crafted an item after one of these times, a random drop could occur giving the player their crafted item and a Golden Wrench. When a Wrench was found, it would be announced to all Online Team Fortress 2 servers at once in the form of a dialogue box in the centre of the screen and an accompanying soundbite. This was only available before and leading up to the Engineer update, until all 100 wrenches were found. An announcement was also shown when one of these wrenches was destroyed.
- Due to this event, the Smelt Reclaimed and Refined Metal blueprints were temporarily disabled until all of the 100 Golden Wrenches had been acquired, to stop people from endlessly uncrafting and recrafting their Metal until they got one. However, even though the Engineer update is out and no Golden Wrenches can be found, these blueprints are still disabled.
- Additionally, Valve had increased the weekly item drop limit for the week of the Engineer update to give people more chances to craft.
