The Spy

The Disguise Kit (also known as the Spytron 3000) is a PDA weapon for the Spy. It appears as an ordinary cigarette case that contains hidden spytech as well as cigarettes.

Selecting this weapon allows the player to disguise as any class on either team. When selected, the disguise menu fills most of the screen, making in game movements difficult. Players can select classes with the correct keys, and switch teams with a single key. Disguising is carried out over a couple of seconds, during which smoke particles will surround the Spy if viewed by another player. Once finished, a line drawing of the Spy shows up briefly on the player's screen to indicate a successful disguise. This line drawing also appears when the disguise is broken. Pressing the last disguise button (PC version) allows the player to change their disguised weapon to one from the slot they currently have equipped.

When disguising, the Disguise Kit chooses a random (in the PC version) player of the appropriate team and class and mimics their name, Health at the time of disguising and weapon loadout. This information is displayed in the lower left corner of the HUD.

In the PC version, once disguised as the enemy, you can see enemies' current health and name as if you were looking at an ally. You can also see the status of any enemy Medics currently healing you.

Function times

Trivia

  • The cigarette case contains 6 cigarettes. One has been taken out and is being used by the Spy during game play, making 7 cigarettes in total.
  • Although very rarely used, the Spy can undisguise without attacking. Pressing the "-" minus key by default and pressing 9, effectively disguising as a friendly Spy and therefore yourself, will remove any applied disguise the Spy is currently using.
  • On the console versions, pressing left and right on the D-Pad cycles through the available disguises and pressing "Triangle" (PS3) or "Y" (Xbox 360) switches team disguises.
  • Crouching, walking, and looking directly upwards when holding the Disguise Kit gave rise to what is known as the Spycrab due to the odd posture adopted by the Spy during this movement.
  • When the Spy is using Your Eternal Reward, the Disguise Kit can not be used, making this weapon similar to the Sentry Gun and Mini Sentry; its use is determined by equipping the class with a certain weapon.
