A Halloween map, also known as Halloween-themed map, Haunted map, or Event, is any one of a series of Team Fortress 2 maps released specifically for activation during annual Halloween events, during which these maps are hosted by Valve's Team Fortress 2 servers with Halloween mode activated by Valve in celebration of the Halloween season. There is no particular Halloween game mode. Rather, a Halloween map is usually a Halloween version of a previously released map with added Halloween-themed decorations and active map elements (like pumpkins and monsters). In these cases, the game mode of the Halloween version is the same as the game mode of the original map. However, with Halloween events activated, the Halloween versions can provide some event-specific game mechanics that are active only during the events (such as Haunted Halloween Gift or Soul Gargoyle).
The first released Halloween map was Harvest Event, which is the Halloween version of Harvest. Both the original and the Halloween version are King of the Hill maps; however, Harvest Event introduced Pumpkin bombs, Halloween pumpkin pickups, and the wandering ghost of Zepheniah Mann that haunts any player that gets too close to him.
Harvest Event was released in the Haunted Hallowe'en Special of 2009. Additional Halloween maps are released each Halloween season in Halloween Updates and Events, which often introduce a new monster spawn or other new game mechanic, and often are accompanied by a comic or other media explaining the "Halloween storyline" for the map.
Naturally, Halloween maps may be activated year-round on individual community servers. However, certain mechanics such as the soul count of the Soul Gargoyle are restricted to the duration of specific events.
