The Golden Wrench appears to be an item of limited availability that turns an enemy's corpse to gold, and is "imbued with an ancient power". Its code was added to the game secretly in the July 1, 2010 update. A coded letter was also hidden in the new update. When the text is decoded with the key "saxtonhale", it reveals the message: "Clearly there is more space than needed. I wonder what else was here!"

A line on TF2items.net states: "Can be found : Yes", meaning that it can be acquired through the Item drop system.
