The Cloak and Dagger is an unlockable PDA weapon for the Spy. It is advanced technology cleverly hidden as a digital watch with a gold-colored case, three small buttons and worn leather straps.

This weapon functions similarly to the Invisibility Watch, but has the ability to recharge the Cloak meter indefinitely, even when cloaked, by remaining stationary. In return, the meter cannot be replenished by picking up ammo crates or weapons from dead players. The Cloak and Dagger will not automatically uncloak if the meter runs out, but will instead allow the Spy to remain partially cloaked, as when touching an enemy, until further recharge. The Cloak meter will not recharge underwater unless the player isn't currently using their Cloak.

The Cloak and Dagger drain rate centers on the velocity at which the player moves. It has a 25% faster maximum drain rate than the stock Invisibility Watch, assuming the Spy is constantly running with the watch activated. Due to the fact that the Cloak and Dagger drains much slower when crouch-walking as compared to running, you can actually cover more distance with a single Cloak charge if you crouch-walk, provided you don't mind taking a lot of time. Alternately, if you want to cover ground faster without giving up full invisibility, you can run until your Cloak runs out, then wait to allow it to recharge, then repeat the process for a slight time advantage. This is slightly risky, however, as when your Cloak runs out and you are still moving, you are somewhat visible.

The Cloak and Dagger is automatically given to any player who obtains 11 Spy achievements.

May 21, 2009 Patch (Sniper vs. Spy Update)

  • The Cloak and Dagger was added to the game.

June 23, 2009 Patch

  • This item now always regenerates at its intended rate. Previously it only regenerated at the correct rate when the Spy was cloaked.
  • Increased this item's regeneration rate slightly.
  • Capped the rate of energy loss from moving faster than run speed (falling / air toss) while cloaked with this item.

July 14, 2009 Patch

  • Fixed this item not regenerating at the correct rate.

December 18, 2009 Patch

  • Fixed the Spy's unlockables watches using the wrong consume/recharge rates.

September 30, 2010 Patch (Mann-Conomy Update)

Bugs

  • As of the March 10, 2011 Patch, initiating the Cloak while disguised as a Demoman with the Chargin' Targe will cause the Demoman's charging voice clip to play.
  • Activating the watch upon round start will sometimes cause the Spy not to hold up the watch. This can only be fixed by dying.

Trivia

  • "Template:W" is a phrase referring to acts of stealth and secrecy. It originated from the French phrase "de cape et d'épée", meaning "of cloak and sword". This term describes characters in theatrical productions who quite literally wore these items as part of their costumes. The phrase was previously referenced as "Uncloak and Dagger", the Spy's job description in Trailer 2.
