Last one alive, lock the door!
The Soldier on proper security

The Battalion's Backup is a craftable secondary weapon for the Soldier class. It appears as a wartime radio pack featuring a transmitter, a folded map secured by a couple of straps, and an attached compass. Accompanying it is a bronze-colored bugle.

Working essentially in reverse to the Buff Banner, this weapon aims to support teams defensively rather than offensively. Once the player's Rage meter displayed in the HUD is filled through taking roughly 175 damage from other players or fall damage in a single life, the pack can be used to make all nearby teammates immune to Critical damage and have a 35% resistance to regular damage for 10 seconds.

None. Rage Meter requires 175 taken damage to fill. Environmental damage(i.e falling) also contributes to the filling of the Rage Meter but self-inflicted damage doesn't contribute to the Rage Meter.

Strategy

Defensive: The main purpose of the Battalion's Backup is to offer strenght amongst a crumbling attack. Build up rage by taking up minimal damage while regaining it through the Black Box, and then charge in to the rescue. As soon as you see some grits and bits of your team mates, it time to deploy the Battalion's Backup and help them push back their attackers. It should be noted that the Battalion's Backup is also a strong counter to the Buff Banner. If you know a enemy who favors the Buff Banner, and is leading a charge to wipe out you and your boy's, its time to deploy the Battalion's Backup. With it, you and your men are now immune to critical hits, including those brought on by the Buff Banner, and will also give you 35% resistance to their damage, allowing your boys, assuming their worth their salt, to push back the attack. Along with offering safety from its brother back pack, it also offers a strong counter to the Kritzkrieg, rendering any critical hits a Heavy, Soldier or any other class may be dealing out useless.

Offensive: Sure, it says "defensive" and some may make a point to only use it for that. But if you want to make use of your bullet sponge powers and give something back to the team, its time to strap on the Battalion's Backup, Grenadier's Softcap and Black Box and charge valiantly in with your comrades. As you fill up your rage from the damage soaked up and regained through the Black Box, blow the horn and lead a critical hit proof battalion of blood thirsty troops head first into combat. Being the main target afterwards will also be in your benifit, and through the enemies heightened damage attention to you, you can find yourself leading many charges in and out of a enemy base in a single life. If you are having trouble with sentries, this is also a must, as added with the full Polycount Soldier set, you can become a building wrecking machine, and smash the enemies defense. 35% damage resistance and immunity to random crits, can make all the difference in securing a successful charge and avoiding a devastating loss.
