The Fire Axe is the default melee weapon for the Pyro. It is a stereotypical Fireman's axe with a wooden handle.
In most circumstances, the Flamethrower is a much better choice for targets in melee range. The Fire Axe however, is typically used on unaware enemies and for humiliation purposes. The Critical hit animation for the Fire Axe is a swift right to left horizontal swing.
