The Sniper aiming anywhere but the head

The Sydney Sleeper is a community-made primary weapon for the Sniper. It is a single-shot pneumatic dart gun with an air tank attached to the stock, a scope fitted to the top and feathers tied to the barrel. When equipped, the Sniper will appear to have darts in his breast pocket.

Like the Sniper Rifle, the Sydney Sleeper can scope, and has a charge function when scoping. However, upon zooming in for at least one second whilst scoped, a flashing Jarate icon will appear next to the charge meter, indicating that the shot will apply a Jarate effect onto an enemy target for 8 seconds. The Jarate effect can only be applied to enemies, and as such will not extinguish allies in the same fashion that the Jarate can. The Sydney Sleeper has a 25% faster charge rate, meaning that it will take 2.8 seconds, reduced from the Sniper Rifle's 3.3 second charge time, to fully charge a shot whilst scoped.

The weapon's main drawback for precision Snipers is its inability to deal critical hits with headshots, therefore relying more heavily on assists to finish off key targets. However, this could also mean that the Sniper can be less accurate and simply Jarate targets so that teammates can deal finishing blows.

The kill icon for the Sydney Sleeper was contributed by MasterOfOrigami.

Bugs

  • Jarate can be applied to ÜberCharged enemies, however they will not take damage.
  • When a player is crit boosted, the game recognizes the weapon as a Crit-boosted Sniper Rifle. The boosted player will deal the same amount of damage a crit-boosted Sniper with the Sniper Rifle would depending on the charge of his Rifle and accuracy of headshot.
  • The darts on the gun lack a BLU skin, despite the darts stowed in the Sniper's breast pocket having them.
  • The weapon is able to produce a laser dot, yet does not feature a laser emitting device.
  • Sydney Sleeper can't explode Pumpkin bombs. This refers to all Snipers Rifles.
  • Attempting to scope while returning to the client view after taunting will cause the Sniper to scope, but there will appear to be no laser sight. Enemies will still be able to see the laser; this only affects the client. This refers to all Sniper Rifles.

Unused content

  • There is an unused dart model that coincides with this weapon.
  • A custom reload animation was submitted, but has not been added to the game.

Trivia

  • Originally, the Sydney Sleeper was planned to be a secondary weapon.
  • When it was first released it had the ability to shoot through multiple people, much like how the Machina does now.
