Firing only one flare at a time, this weapon is able to inflict fire damage on distant targets. As a projectile, each shot travels in a straight line for a relatively long range, approximately at the speed of 1450 Hammer Units per second (90.625 feet/second), before its trajectory curves down drastically. The shot will disintegrate on contact with any surface with a hissing noise. Unlike other projectiles, the Flare Gun is one of the few weapons not subject to distance indexed damage falloff or ramp up. The Flare Gun cannot be fired whilst the player is underwater, but it can still damage enemies if fired into water.

The Flare Gun is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Pyro. It is a single-shot, team-colored flare gun with a flared barrel.

A Pyro with the Flare Gun can ignite enemies out of range of the Flamethrower, though this does require careful aim. It is particularly useful for distracting Snipers from their scoping and Engineers from their Sentry Guns. Should a flare come into contact with any opponent already on fire, the flare will deal Mini-Crit damage. After travelling a distance of 800 units or greater distance (a few inches shorter than 2Fort's bridge) and impacting a burning opponent, the shot will deal a Critical hit. An experienced player can therefore finish off fleeing or alight enemies quickly with a flare.
+
The weapon fires low-damage flare projectiles that travel at approximately 2000 Hammer units per second (roughly 38 m/s or 125 ft/s). The flares have a shallow trajectory curve that causes them to drop vertical distance drastically at long range. Enemies hit by the flare take minor damage and are set on fire. The damage dealt is not subject to damage falloff or ramp-up from distance. Additionally, flares deliver Critical hits on targets who are already on fire. Unlike most other weapons that require reloading, the Flare Gun is reloaded even if the player switches to a different weapon before the reload animation plays.

Players equipped with the Flare Gun as a Pyro can use the Hadouken kill taunt.
+
The flare disintegrates on contact with any surface, or with flares fired by the opposing team, with a hissing noise. While the weapon cannot be fired while the player is underwater, the flare can damage (but not ignite) submerged enemies if fired from land.

A fired flare can be reflected by an enemy Pyro.

*The Flare Gun is most likely a remake of the Incendiary Cannon from Team Fortress Classic, although there are a few large differences. Incendiary Rockets, for instance, have a large area of effect, while the Flare Gun requires careful aim, has no splash and comparatively does more damage. Furthermore, Flares travel a bit faster than the rockets, although both follow an arced path.

*In real life, flare guns are used for calling for help from a distance, as the flares make a visible flash allowing people to locate the position of whoever fired it. They also have been reported being used as improvised weapons, as they are able to ignite flammable material like clothing and human flesh.

*The afterburn of a flare projectile is the only weapon that can harm a Scout under the effect of Bonk!.

*If a Pyro were to reflect a flare and hit a target who then dies from the afterburn, the kill icon will be that of the Flare Gun and not the reflected flare icon.

*The Flare Gun is currently the only weapon that can do more damage at longer range than at shorter range.

Latest revision as of 19:23, 31 August 2024

This article is about the Pyro's secondary weapon. For other flare guns, see Flare Gun (disambiguation).
It allows the Pyro to ignite an enemy at long range, but does require careful aim on their part. It’s particularly useful for causing havoc on Snipers and Engineers who want to keep their distance.
Flare Gun publicity blurb

The Flare Gun is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Pyro. It is a single-shot, team-colored flare gun with a flared barrel.

The flare disintegrates on contact with any surface, or with flares fired by the opposing team, with a hissing noise. While the weapon cannot be fired while the player is underwater, the flare can damage (but not ignite) submerged enemies if fired from land.

Taunting with the Flare Gun equipped results in the Hadouken kill taunt.

The Flare Gun is automatically given to any player who obtains 10 Pyro achievements.
