The Gunboats are an unlockable secondary weapon for the Soldier. They appear as a pair of leather boots with metal plates attached to the soles.
When equipped, the Gunboats will function as long as they are equipped, and as such do not need to be drawn like other weapons. The main function of this footwear is reduce the amount of self-damage that is received from Rocket Jumping. This damage reduction does not apply to rockets that injure other enemies, unless the damage is dealt by the splash radius of a rocket jump. They also do not prevent fall damage suffered by the player.

- While this item is equipped, the user takes 60% less explosive damage from their own rocket jumps. However, they do not provide any fall damage reduction.

Recent Changes
- Prior to the Engineer update, the Gunboats blocked 75% of rocket damage.
Trivia
- The Gunboats were designed to be useable by both the Soldier and the Demoman, so that regardless of the winner of the Soldier-Demoman War only one item needed to be created.
- The Gunboats cannot be obtained via achievements, as the Soldier has only 3 achievement milestones like all other classes. The only way the Gunboats can be acquired is by the Item drop system or Crafting.
- Before the January 13, 2010 Patch, if you had the Gunboats equipped, you could perform the Equalizer's taunt and survive the explosion. The explosion would send you skywards; potentially even high enough to unlock the "Where Eagles Dare" achievement.
- In the September 2, 2010 blog post, Valve jokingly stated that, thanks to connections with Nintendo, Mario will have a desire to wear lead weighted boots.
- There is currently a bug where if you use the Buff Banner or Battalion's Backup and then quickly switch to the Gunboats while blowing the trumpet, the Soldier will go into civilian mode.
