Due to the comedic style of Team Fortress 2 and Valve's humor, the game includes references, usually in a humorous fashion. There are many different types, from games to movies. Even jokes that have developed within the game and its community have been included. Below are references specific to the Scout class.

Batman
Achievement: I'm Bat Man
A reference to, of course, the fictional vigilante Batman. In addition, this line (with Bat Man being one whole word), was spoken by Michael Keaton in the 1989 movie adaption.
Games
Super Mario 64
Several of the noises the Scout makes when dodging bullets under the effects of Bonk! Atomic Punch are imitations of sound effects from the Super Mario Bros. series, starting in Super Mario 64.

"If you build it, he will come" is a line from the fantasy/drama film Field Of Dreams and has been used many times in popular culture.

Achievements: First Blood & First Blood, Part 2
The achievements First Blood & First Blood, Part 2 are references to the first two Rambo films, titled First Blood and First Blood Part II. First Blood is also a common term in other FPS games, used when someone gets the first kill in a given match.

The Six Million Dollar Man
The Scout's "Whanananana..." while under the effects of Bonk! is an imitation of the slow-mo sound effect from The Six Million Dollar Man.
Wilhelm Scream
The so-called "Wilhelm Scream" is a sound byte from 1951 film Distant Drums. The sound byte was re-discovered by Ben Burtt, sound editor for Star Wars with the label "Man being eaten by alligator." Burtt then implemented the sound byte in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope when a Stormtrooper is shot. Burtt named the sound byte after Private Wilhelm, a character in the 1953 film The Charge at Feather River who used the scream. Since then it has been used hundreds of times in movies, television, and games (Wikipedia). In Team Fortress 2 it makes a cameo appearance as one of the Scout's death cries, as well as in the Trailer 2. The scream itself can be heard here.

The Sandman
The name is an hint towards the popular 1954 song "Mr Sandman" by the Chordettes (Wikipedia), fitting well with the fact how the baseball puts hit enemies "to sleep" for a short duration.

- The term comes from baseball statistics, where it signifies getting a hit for every turn at bat. It was transferred to other activities in the 1920s.
- The Scout's accent and use of a bat as a melee weapon reflect the avid baseball culture of the Boston area including the renowned Boston Red Sox.
- The Sandman's taunt is a reference to Babe Ruth's famous called shot.(Wikipedia)
- The name of Bonk! Atomic Punch may refer to the term "The Bonk" or "Hitting the wall", a condition when an athlete (usually in endurance sports) suddenly loses energy or becomes fatigued, much like how the Scout used to slow down after the effects of Bonk! wore off.
Achievement: A Year To Remember
- 2004 was the year that the Boston Red Sox won the World Series for the first time since 1918, breaking the Curse of the Bambino.
Achievement: Beanball
- "Beanball" is a colloquial sports term for a ball thrown at an opposing player with the intention of striking him such as to cause harm, often connoting a throw at the player's head.
Achievement: Blocking The Plate
- In baseball, blocking the plate is a common technique performed by a catcher to prevent a runner from scoring. The act of blocking the plate accounts for most of the physical contact in baseball.
Achievement: Brushback
- A brushback pitch is a pitch thrown high and inside, usually a fastball, to force the batter away from the plate, often to intimidate.
Achievement: Caught Napping
- A baserunner who is tagged out because he wasn't paying attention to what the defensive players were doing is "caught napping." Often this involves a pickoff play in which the infielder sneaks up behind the runner and takes a throw from the pitcher, or, less often, the catcher.
Achievement: Closer
- In baseball, a closing pitcher, more frequently referred to as a closer, is a relief pitcher who specializes in closing out games.
Achievement: Doctoring The Ball
- To "doctor the ball" means to apply a foreign substance to the ball or otherwise altering it in order to put an unnatural spin on a pitch.
Achievement: Fall Classic
- The World Series—the championship series of Major League Baseball, in which the champion of the American League faces off against the champion of the National League. Typically, this series takes place in October, so playing in October is the goal of any major league team.
Achievement: Foul Territory
- In baseball, foul territory or foul ground is defined as the area of the field outside of the foul lines. The foul lines and foul poles are not part of foul territory.
Achievement: Gun Down
- A play on the phrase Run Down in which a runner is stranded between two bases, and runs back and forth to try to avoid fielders with the ball. The fielders (usually basemen) toss the ball back and forth, to prevent the runner from getting to a base, and typically close in on him and tag him.
Achievement: No Hitter
- A no-hitter is a reference to a game in which one team managed to prevent the other team from getting a hit.
Achievement: Out of the Park
- Out of the ballpark is a Home Run in which the ball went over all of the outfield seatings (i.e. it went outside the whole arena).
Achievement: Pop Fly
- A pop fly is a fly ball that goes high up in the air without travelling far out in the field.
Achievement: Race for the Pennant
- A Pennant Race is the last weeks of a baseball season.
Achievement: Round Tripper
- A Home Run. The analogy is to a commuter who buys a round-trip ticket from home plate to second base and back again to home.
Achievement: Side Retired
- When the third out of an inning is called, the "side is retired" and the other team takes its turn at bat. A pitcher or a defensive team can be said to have "retired the side."
Achievement: The Big Hurt
- Frank Thomas is a Major League Baseball designated hitter who is currently a free agent. He was given the nickname "The Big Hurt" by broadcaster Ken Harrelson, who coined the term in the 1992 season.
Achievement: The Cycle
- Hitting for the cycle means to hit a single, double, triple and Home Run in the same game. To accomplish this feat in order is termed a "natural cycle." Hitting for the cycle is a rare enough occurrence that Major League Baseball keeps special statistics on it.
Achievement: Triple Play
- A Triple Play is the act of making 3 outs during the same hit.
Achievement: Dodgers 1, Giants 0
- A reference to the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants whom are two professional baseball teams with a long history of rivalry.
