Chain Über
Medics using the Chain Über tactic on Badwater Basin.
Ze healing is not as rewarding as ze hurting.
The Medic

The Chain Über is a strategy used by 2 Medics to maintain a constant state of invulnerability. To perform this technique, one Medic must ÜberCharge a second Medic, who uses his Übersaw to attack enemy players to fill his own ÜberCharge meter. This Medic will quickly return the ÜberCharge to the other Medic to repeat the same action. If carefully executed, both Medics can remain invulnerable for extended periods of time.

In order to Chain Über, you need to have...

  1. An Übersaw
  2. A Medic Partner with the Übersaw
  3. A Very good Medic that is able to chain über with you.
  4. A Medigun held out

Basics

Requirements:

Procedure:

  1. Medic #1 fills his ÜberCharge meter with the Medigun by healing friendly players, or through using his Übersaw.
  2. Medic #2 equips his Übersaw.
  3. Medic #1 ÜberCharge's Medic #2.
  4. Medic #2 Attacks enemy players to fill his ÜberCharge while invulnerable. Four successful strikes will fill his ÜberCharge meter to 100%.
  5. Medic #1 and #2 switch roles and repeat Steps 2-4.

Refer to the video for a visual demonstration.

Strategy

Voice communication is vital to successful Chain Übering. If you are currently wielding the Übersaw, have the Übering Medic announce your Über-Charge percentage meter and orchestrate when it is time for the Über switch.

Chain Über can be achieved effectively in areas crowded with enemies as it is easier to attack them with their Übersaw. Chain Über can be used effectively in places such as:

  • Spawn doors.
  • Carts heavily guarded by enemy players.
  • Control points being captured.

Tips

Use the following tips to help you chain effectively:

  1. Heal team-mates until you're ready to start (or continue) the Chain Über.
  2. Don't bother with objectives unless heavily guarded; your task is to cause as much havoc as possible and to maintain the chain, not to capture a point.
  3. If enemies are no longer around, stop the Chain Über. Save your buildup and start again when opportunity is ripe.
  4. Slower classes are primary targets. Scouts will only lead you on a wild chase that will end your chain. (If necessary, Scouts may be taken down using the Blutsauger or Syringe Gun.)
  5. Stay away from Pyros that use the Flamethrowers airblast. If you are repeatedly being airblasted, either retreat or shoot him with your Blutsauger or Syringe Gun while your ally continues to Über you.
  6. Try to stick near to your Medic buddy while you are doing Chain Übering. Don't mix up your partner.
  7. Keep a close attention about your surroundings to plan for your escape.
  8. If your partner dies, retreat while shooting with the Blutsauger or Syringe Gun.
  9. Don't use Blutsauger or Syringe Gun except for Sentry Guns, airblasting Pyros, or Scouts if necessary.
  10. The Übering Medic may block enemy movement to aid the Übered Medic rack kills.
  11. To quickly get away from unrelenting Sentry Guns, jump while Übered to use the Sentry Gun's recoil effect to your advantage.

Countering Chain Über Medics

Though there may be few, there are various counters to Chain Über Medics - some similar to countering a normal Medic pair.

  • Wait inside the spawn room until one of the Medics run out of ÜberCharge's then kill them.
  • As a Pyro, airblast the attacking Medic out of the melee range of other teammates.
  • As a Soldier or Demoman, blast them apart them using sticky bombs or rockets.
